Louisiana braces for Harvey’s rain as it marks Katrina’s 12th anniversary

New Orleans woke up with an uneasy sense of déjà vu Tuesday as it kept a wary eye on Tropical Storm Harvey while marking the 12th anniversary of Hurricane Katrina.

Katrina made landfall in Plaquemines Parish, Louisiana, on August 29, 2005, but its aftermath became the truly historic catastrophe. Federal levees and floodwalls crumbled, ushering powerful storm surge into the city and leaving 80 percent of New Orleans underwater for weeks. More than 1,500 people were killed and 200,000 properties were damaged.

Now, Louisiana is reviewing lessons learned from the deadly storm, as Harvey’s outer bands could douse the state over the coming days, Gov. John Bel Edwards said.
Harvey is expected to make landfall Tuesday night or Wednesday morning along the Louisiana-Texas border, said Andy Patrick, National Weather Service meteorologist-in-charge at the Lake Charles Weather Forecast Office. It will bring winds of 30-40 mph and a 2-4 foot storm surge.

Already, 500 people were rescued overnight Monday amid flooding in and around Lake Charles, in western Louisiana, the governor said.
“The Katrina situation is one that ever since then, we know how to deal with rain, we know how to deal with floods,” Edwards told CNN’s Chris Cuomo Tuesday. “We’ve got a lot of experienced people. We’ve got the right equipment.”
“One of the things we’re trying to do is be the best neighbor possible to Texas, because they were very gracious and hospitable. They took in a lot of people after Katrina, if you remember,” Edwards said. “And they remain the center of gravity as it relates to Harvey. … So we are trying to focus on preparing for and responding to the storm here in Louisiana, but also trying to help our neighbor in Texas.”

‘Whole city’ now underwater as Harvey makes another landfall

While countless Houstonians are still waiting for rescue, Tropical Storm Harvey has now swallowed another Texas city.

“Our whole city is underwater right now but we are coming!” Port Arthur Mayor Derrick Freeman posted Wednesday morning on Facebook. “If you called, we are coming. Please get to higher ground if you can, but please try stay out of attics.”
Port Arthur — about 90 miles east of the devastated Houston area — is so deluged that floodwater has overwhelmed an evacuation center. Murky brown water nearly reached the top of cots at the shelter.

Evacuees at the Bob Bowers Civic Center in Port Arthur are inundated again when the shelter got flooded.

The situation in Port Arthur is so dire that police are asking for volunteers to bring boats and help.
“Rescue boats welcome in Port Arthur to assist emergency personnel,”the police department posted on Facebook. The city is asking anyone trapped to hang a white towel, sheet or shirt outside to alert rescuers.
Rescue boats fill Tidwell Road in Houston as they help flood victims evacuate the area on 28th August.
The disaster in Port Arthur is part of Tropical Storm Harvey’s devastating encore. Harvey made landfall once again Wednesday morning, slamming into the Louisiana coast near the Texas border.

Head Coach: Patriots Lost Bowling Spirit

By: Precious Mills

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts- “We just have to work on our bowling spirits, we lost it for this game and other games we’ve had it so we just have to get back that bowling spirit. The batting has been good so we don’t have to talk too much about the batting.”

So said Head Coach of the St.Kitts and Nevis Patriots Phil Simmons while speaking to local reporters on the night of Wednesday 23rd August at the Warner Park Cricket Stadium following the match lost to the Trinbago Knight Riders in the climax of four matches of the Hero CPL tournament played here.

His remarks came in response to a question posed to him concerning what the team has to work on going forward for the upcoming games.

The home team departed the Federation on Thursday 24th August en route to Jamaica for another leg of the CPL tournament having won two out of four matches.

Following Wednesday night’s game, the Knight Riders won after multiple delays (due to rainfall and power blackout) and needing on 86 to win off 6 over following the final delay.

They reached 86 for 2 off six overs resulting in the Knight Riders securing a spot in the finals to be played in that team’s home country.

Commenting on the outcome of that match, Simmonds said: “In the end when we came back out, we just didn’t hit the right spots; we didn’t hit the right length that we wanted to hit and we just got taken apart in that task in the two overs so it’s been good until then.”

“This is the first time that we’ve been taken apart. This team is the only team that has taken us apart…We are working hard on everything that we need to do and there are some days that you don’t get it right and today was one of those days,” he also stated during the chit-chat with reporters.

Speaking about the performance of team on home soil, Simmonds said: “ It’s just that the guys wanted to do well, as simple as that so they come out and they worked hard and they tried to do other things; batting has been excellent, the bowling has been good. We’ve had two bad bowling spells and both against Trinidad but other than that everything’s been going good. We played well, we had four games here, we won two and we should have won the next one (but) rain came but all and all, I think we’ve done well at home, we just need to look forward to the other two games and then to the playoffs.”

The outcome of the other three matches played are as follows: Friday 18th August- the Patriots defeated Barbados Trident by 13 runs via the Duckworth/Lewis system; on Saturday 19th August Patriots vs St. Lucia Stars, that match was abandoned due to rain and on Monday 21st August in the match Patriots vs Jamaica Tallawahs, the Patriots won by 37 runs.

Come Wednesday 30th August in Jamaica the Patriots will play against the home team the Jamaica Tallawahs followed by a match the Barbados Tridents in that tam’s country scheduled for Sunday 3rd September.

Notably, Patriots is captained by Jamaican native celebrity batsman Chris Gayle formerly of the Jamaica Tallawahs.

Christian Society Hypocritical For Outlawing Marijuana

By: Precious Mills

BASSETERRE, St.Kitts– The Organisation of Rastafari in Unity, during a press conference held on Monday 22nd August at NEMA Headquarters in Basseterre, put forward a view that St.Kitts-Nevis as a Christian society is being hypocritical in outlawing marijuana, a plant created by the Almighty.

That point of reasoning was expressed by Ras Sankofa who also criticised how the judiciary system handles individuals labelled offenders of the Drug Act using heavy fines and imprisonment.

“If the Almighty gives us something for our use and we use it, how are we committing an offense?” was one of the questions he posed.

In his remarks, Ras Sankofa shared that he too had been dealt a punishment in the past having been jailed for such an offense.

Another observation he made is that: “The government should not have the authority or the right to fight against a plant that the Almighty created.”

As many people are aware, marijuana is widely used by Rastas as a sacrament for holy purposes.

Ras Sankofa pointed out that historically “Marijuana was one of the number one used plants from creation. Like every other plant, it was given to us by the Most High for our use.”

He cited the Biblical content from Genesis 1:29 which speaks to ‘Behold, I have given you every plant yielding seed that is on the face of all the earth, and every tree with seed in its fruit. You shall have them for food.’

He then went on to say: “Marijuana is therefore a gift from the creator and as a Christian nation of people who believe in the Almighty and His creation, it seems quite hypocritical to single out one plant out of billions of species and families of plants, flowers and trees and make it a crime to society.”

Ras Sankofa added: “But when I read the Drug Act, it’s not just that one plant; it is also the coca leaf and poppy plant is illegal here in St.Kitts (and Nevis) and most parts of the world. So I would say three plants out of billions of species of plants.”

He separated marijuana from being classified as a drug among those two other plants by talking about its use in its natural state.

“Anything the Almighty create, it is natural. From man change it into another form then it becomes either a drug or something unnatural; something that you can say man made. Marijuana, we use it in its natural state, the way Father give us so we give thanks.”

Ras Sankofa also remarked: “If the Almighty gives us something for our use and we use it, how are we committing an offense? That’s the question we must ask ourselves. Are we higher than the Creator? If the Creator gives you something and he tells you to use this for your benefit why would man in their immoral state of mind will choose to make that plant illegal? …It is a wrong thing.”

He also stated: “We are faced now with a situation…are we gonna follow the law of man or are we gonna follow the law of creator? So this is the basic question we are faced with in our daily lives and we being spiritual people living in the western world, we cannot betray the love and the blessing that the Creator has given to (us) to be able to give us such plant. So that is our basic foundation is that marijuana is a plant, it comes from a seed created by the Most High and it is immoral to outlaw anything that the Almighty create in its natural state.”

In touching on the social aspect of the controversial topic, he highlighted “A person should not be criminalised risk losing family for jail time.”

He also talked about the lump sum monetary penalties.

“When a man is found guilty of (having) marijuana, according to the law, the Drug Act, the magistrate has the right under summary conviction to charge him up to $100,000 and for indictment which is like a high court matter, up to 200,000.”

He mentioned that a young man from his community is currently facing a similar situation in that regard.

“Right now I have a youngster in my village of Dieppe Bay who has to pay $20,000 in one month or six months in prison. He never committed a crime ever before in his life and the youth is under (the age of) 25 and there is hundreds of youth who’ve been through that!”

Other presenters at Monday’s press conference included Internal Medicine Specialist Dr. Terrance Drew and Former Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Agriculture on the sister isle Nevis Dr. Kelvin Daly.

Today (Friday), the Rasta organisation group is scheduled to hold its annual march through the streets of Basseterre, starting at 4PM from the Greenlands area and climaxing at the Independence Square with a rally.

Chamber President Calls On Gov’t To Protect Citizens, Business Communities

By: Precious Mills

BASSETERRE, St.Kitts– Following the recent shooting death of Nevisian businessman Joseph Benjamin, the President of the Chamber of Industry and Commerce on Nevis, Ernie France, is calling on the federal government to move fast on plans to protect citizens and business communities.

Speaking on WINNFM last week, he stated: “Yet again, the Nevisian community and more specifically the business community has been thrust into a state of mourning on learning of the passing of Mr. Benjamin. The tragic event has left many persons shocked and dismayed and as a private sector body the Chamber is particularly troubled that this type of criminal activity where businessmen are targeted, shot and killed.”

He added: “It is very serious and it is very disconcerting and we are once again calling on the local and federal government to move expeditiously, even more expeditiously and with greater haste to ensure the execution of the plans that we have heard of to ensure that the citizens and the business communities of this country are protected from this type of criminal activity.”

He informed that media house that the issue of personal security is now being seriously considered.

France also disclosed that the Chamber has encouraged its members to do all in their power to tighten security and that the government has responded with duty free concessions for security apparatus.

Joseph, 63, the owner of Philisha’s Guest House Joseph succumbed to gunshot injuries on Monday 21st August, on after he was attacked on Saturday 19th August outside his home at Pinney’s Road in Nevis.

Notably, the deceased’s business place is located in the Pinney’s community.

France described the slain businessman as hard working.

“Mr. Joseph is a well-known businessman here in the community in Nevis and probably more well known for his involvement with a quarry business which he operated for years in the Potworks area but in more recent times he operated and owned as I understand it, Philisha’s Guest House, in the Pinney’s area here in Nevis. A very hard working gentleman and someone who goes about his business, works hard and operates his business. I have never known him to be involved in anything that is questionable and so it’s really very disconcerting to learn of his passing.”

Joseph’s shooting death has taken the Federation’s homicide count for 2017 to 18 with 11 on St.Kitts and 7 on Nevis.

According to police, investigators from the Violent Crimes Unit responded to the incident around 8.00pm last Saturday on Pinney’s Road and that initial investigations revealed the victim was shot by an unknown assailant upon exiting his car on arrival at his residence.

Reportedly, Joseph was transported to the Alexandria Hospital by a family member.

Police are encouraging anyone who may have information with regard to this incident to share such details.

Individuals are advised that information can be passed to Violent Crime Unit in Nevis at 469-5269, Crime Stoppers at 1-800-8477(TIPS) or by using the SKN Crime Reporter App on your Smartphone.

Gov’t Wrong and Strong In Dirty Risk To Aquifer

By: Thinking Citizen

The Team Unity Government or the Government of “Nine Blind Mice” as it is generally called these days has made two major and miserable mistakes that have put an indelible black spot on the character and reputation of the party and the Government.

The two black spots are as follows, namely:

(1)   The secretive and clandestine approval that was given for the conduct of the Stem Cell Research at the JNF General Hospital and the subsequent victimisation of the then CMO Dr. Patrick Martin for simply doing his duty and

(2)   The abandonment for purely political reasons of the Basseterre High School at Victoria Road and the proposal to build  a brand new school on the site  of the Basseterre Aquifer.

The “Nine Blind Mice” Government gave permission for the conduct of Stem Cell Research without even letting Dr. Patrick Martin, the Chairman of the Medical Board know what was going on at the Hospital. Imagine that it is the same Government that is telling people that it is committed to Openness and Transparency. What hypocrisy!

The “Nine Blind Mice” Government also claims to be committed to the principle of “A Fair Share For All.” But Dr. Patrick Martin was the only doctor who was victimised. Was he given “A Fair Share”? It looks like rather than “A Fair Share:, he was given the dirty (Sh*tty) end of the stick.

It seems to most right thinking persons that the actions of the Government are clearly contradictory. First, the Government is urging every police officer to do his or her duty and secondly the government has punished Dr. Patrick Martin severely for doing his official duty. It is no wonder that crime is on the increase.

The indelible blot or stain on the character and reputation of the Team Unity Government lies in the fact that it is the only Government in the Eastern Caribbean that has ever punished a high-ranking Public Servant for doing his official duty.

Just as Dr. Timothy Harris and his gang have given Dr. Patrick Martin the dirty (sh*tty) end of the stick just so Dr. Timothy Harris and his gang are bent on giving the people of Basseterre dirty (sh*tty) water to drink by his determination to build the new Basseterre High School on the Basseterre Aquifer.

We all should take careful note of how Team Unity intends to repay us for putting the members of Team Unity in Government. The weight of the arguments insofar as the proposed Basseterre High School is concerned is that the proposed new school should not be built on the Basseterre Aquifer. Any further attempts to proceed with plans to build the new School on the Basseterre Aquifer would constitute nothing less than pure wickedness and viciousness. Regardless of what one might wish to say about Dr. Douglas, I say that he is  not the type of leader who would want to give his people dirty (sh*tty) water to drink.

With all that he say and she say and them say that is going around and around, the safest and best thing for the Team Unity Government to do is go back to using the old Basseterre High School on Victoria Road after appropriate measures have been taken. This will show above all things that Dr. Timothy Harris and his gang are truly concerned with safeguarding the health of the people.

Also, it is more than a matter of health however terribly important that it may be. It is also the wisest and best use of Government’s very scarce financial resources that matters as well.

Think of the money that would have to be spent to ensure that the construction of the new School on the proposed location does not contaminate the Basseterre Aquifer. There is still time for the Government to change its mind. It is better to be steadfast in the RIGHT than steadfast in the WRONG.

BASSETERRE, St.Kitts
-More than 15 representatives collectively from both the private and public sectors, on Friday 11th August, gathered at the Marriott Resort in Frigate Bay for a workshop about ‘Stimulating Private Sector Development and Economic Growth.’

The event was presented by the Ministry of International Trade, Industry, Commerce and Consumer Affairs in collaboration with Compete Caribbean Partnership Facility.

The seminar observed five objectives namely: (1)To sensitise stakeholders about the state of the private sector development (PSD) in the region and its importance with respect to future growth, (2)To Increase awareness of current best practices by presenting PSD solutions that are working elsewhere, (3)To elicit discussion on PSD on priorities, at the national level, as observed by the public sector, private sector and civil society stakeholders, (4)To sensitise participants on the CCPF’s mandate, achievements to date and role in supporting the adoption of transformative PSD solutions in St.Kitts and Nevis and (5)To Identify promising PDS projects and strengthen partnerships for implementation.

Among those in attendance were bankers and employees from the Ministry of Culture and also Agriculture.

Representing the St.Kitts-Nevis Trades and Labour Union were: President Joseph O’Flaherty; General Secretary Batumba Tak; Treasurer Frank Farrell and Staff Representative Precious Mills.

Private sector development lead specialist and executive director of CCPF Slyvia Dohnert was a presenter.

Mister of International Trade, Industry, Commerce and Consumer Affairs Lindsay Grant, in his remarks, spoke about the function of Compete Caribbean.

“As we may all know Compete Caribbean is a private sector development programme that provides technical assistance and grants and investment funding to support micro small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) among other engagements in 15 countries across the region, our government is very supportive of its private sector as it no doubt is the major engine and growth and hence this initiative by compete Caribbean is very timely and it enhances the work that we’ve been engaged in and have identified as our policy initiatives on behalf of the private sector.”

He added: “The importance of micro and SMEs cannot be over emphasized. They are essential to our national economy and in recent times played and increasingly strategic role in rebuilding and rebalancing not only our national and regional economies but economies the world over. We remain cognizant that these enterprises are trying to survive in the current hostile financial and competitive marketplace and urgently requires long term and meaningful support from our respective governments.”

The Permanent Secretary of that Ministry, Jasemin Weekes, touched on the significance of the private and public sector partnerships.

“Your presence here today signals your interest and commitment to the task. The Ministry’s relationship with the private sector can be best described as cordial and buoyant. We not only engage our private sector partners on the implications of various agreements that we are party to but we also dialogue on opportunities to be realised through these various agreements and the approach and strategies to be taken to pursuing them,” she told in speaking to private sector representatives.

She informed that the ministry is mandated to provide support and assistance to our small and medium enterprises and collaborates closely with our manufacturing and commercial sectors in ensuring that the opportunities for growth, market access and market presence are realised.”

“We are, however, very much aware that such dialogue and relationship must be consistent and strategic given the dynamic impact of the environment in which we function,” she noted.

In addressing representatives of the public sector, Weekes said their attendance “suggest that you understand your role in building the public-private sector relationship with is mandatory in this dynamic globalised environment. As public sector officials, it is important that we continue forge, foster and deepen our relationship with the private sector, recognising that as technocrats the decisions that we make affect the ability to survive.”

SKN Patriots Counting On Support From Locals

BASSETERRE, St.Kitts– The St.Kitts and Nevis Patriots home team is counting on the support of locals during its scheduled four matches to be played at the Warner Park Cricket Stadium in Basseterre, starting from Friday 18th August going against the Barbados Tridents at 9PM.

Head Coach Phil Simmons while speaking at a press conference held on Thursday 17th August at the St.Kitts Marriot Resort in Frigate Bay, in sending a message to local fans, encouraged them to give the type of support that would drive the team’s winning spirit during the 2017 Hero CPL (Caribbean Premier League) tournament.

“As with everywhere, those who watch the Trinidad game what we played couple nights ago saw the support that Trinidad was getting even when we had them down so that is the kind of support we need at home and if we can get that then we will put ourselves in a position to win all the games but that home support is needed. Come out and enjoy because it’s going to be an enjoyable four games.”

Others seated at the head table during that media conference were: player Samuel Badree (team Patriots) as well as Head Coach of Robin Sighn and player Ravi Rampaul of the Barbados Tridents.

The Patriots representatives were questioned about any break in its momentum ahead of tonight’s match following its winning streak being broken by Trinbago’s Knight Riders following that game played on Monday 14th August in Trinidad.

Simmons responded saying: “There are hardly any series that you are going to go through and don’t have a loss so the momentum is still there; you have a loss and you have to pick yourselves up and move on so that’s the way we look at it, you’re going to lose one or two games but we lost one and it’s time to move forward.”

Notably, team Patriots so far have won three out of its four games as part of its 2017 match schedule which is expected to see a total of 10 games.

The team, captained by celebrity batsman Chris Gyale formerly of the Jamaica Tallawahs, beat the Guyana Amazon Warriors following two matches played on Saturday 5th and Sunday 6th August in Florida in the US. The team continued its winning ways having played against the St. Lucia Stars on Saturday 12th August.

The cricket action, slated to take place on home team soil, continues on Saturday 19th August Patriots vs St. Lucia Stars at 9PM then on Monday 21st August Patriots vs Jamaica Tallawahs at 6PM and on Wednesday 23rd August Patriots vs Trinidad Knight Riders at 6PM.

Other match fixtures are expected to see the Patriots playing against team Tallawahs on Wednesday 30th August in Jamaica followed by a match against the Tridents on Sunday 3rd September in Barbados.

Cricket Ticket Politics Drama…86-Year- Old Man Talks Threat Allegation

Photo of 86-year-old Lincoln George Cooper was very emotional during the interview (Spokesman Snap)

By: Precious Mills

BASSETERRE, St.Kitts– An emotional 86-year-old man named Lincoln George Cooper, during an exclusive interview with this media house on Monday 14th August, claimed that he was verbally threatened that day after he made a party-politics statement in response to a series of back and forth having visited Warner Park to buy cricket match tickets.

“This thing couldn’t happen under the Labour Party,” was what he allegedly said to a particular male who in turn allegedly threatened to punch him.

“I’m upset at how I was treated to get my tickets. I’m upset! I’m very upset! To me this is like intimidation. He must be represent some part of the government because he wouldn’t get so angry because I said to him under Labour this couldn’t happen,” Cooper who was sporting a St.Kitts-Nevis Patriots cap said.

He showed this reporter the four tickets he bought for the four scheduled matches featuring the home team the St.Kitts-Nevis Patriots, starting this weekend.

He explained that initially, he had called to find out about buying tickets and was told that tickets would be sold on the internet.

Online ticket was not convenient for the elderly man who said: “In my whole life, I never book up no ticket on no internet.”

He highlighted that since last week he has been going the park and that nobody knew the timeframe for tickets to be sold.

Cooper informed that somebody told him that tickets would have been sold at telecommunication firm Digicel and so he came into Basseterre early that morning.

“I come down early Monday morning to pick up my tickets. When I go there, they tell me 10 O’ clock; the tickets gone back in the park so I went up the park to get my tickets. When I go a man was there …and said ‘come, come with me and I’ll show you where you could get tickets.’ So he carry to show me where to get the tickets and when he go down there no tickets there.”

He informed that the man told him to come back at 10 O’ clock.

Cooper continued: “So I told him, this thing couldn’t happen under Labour. You know what he tell me?! He tell me he would box me down! De man tell me because I tell him what he do there this morning couldn’t happen under Labour and the man threaten to box me down! God is my judge!”

As understood, the exchange of words between him and that man, happened outside of the office he visited.

“He come outside and I was talking about getting the tickets and so, and I told him if the Labour Party was in power, this thing wouldn’t happen like that and he say he going box me down but I’m 86 years old; he ain’t know in England I used to work for a security company…I can defend myself!”

Asked what his response to the alleged verbal threat was, Cooper commented: “I swear at him! I told him to F@#k off! I said ‘You can’t do me nothing. I am a Kittitian and for 15 years (after my retirement) my money come straight from England to St.Kitts bank.”

He went on further to say that after returning to the park to buy his tickets, the same man interrupted the handing over of the items.

“When the girl was giving me the tickets, he tell the girl stop and phone up some place like to stop me from getting the tickets. I don’t know who he phone up. Whoever he phone up, they must be say he can’t stop me from getting my tickets.”

Cooper applauded the work of the former Labour Party administration, led by immediate former Prime Minister Dr. Denzil L. Douglas, for upgrading of the Warner Park sports facility.

“I like cricket. Every time it got cricket in St.Kitts I go because I used to play cricket in the park myself for years. I had six brothers (and) we had our own cricket team. I grow up on Church Street and I never dreamed to see that St.Kitts got cricket in the park and with flood lights. You know who made that possible? Douglas! I remember all of my life as a child, (there were criticism that) St.Kitts (is) too small.”

He added: “I support the Labour Party because they do good for the country and that is the reason I support the party; not for myself, I’m ok. I ain’t owe nobody nothing in this world; no bank, no hire purchase …but the reason I support the Labour Party is because they help everybody.”
