Patrice Nisbett: ‘No Team Unity For Me’

By: Spokesman Newsroom

BASSETERRE, St.Kitts ( Tuesday 5th June 2018)-“Patrice Nisbett is not for sale and those who generate and spread fake news will be called upon to pay the consequences of their actions.  I will continue to serve in the interest of the people with the aim of peace, progress and prosperity for all.”

So said the only opposition parliamentarian of the Nevis Reformation Party (NRP) and former Attorney General Patrice Nisbett in dismissing rumors that he has been in discussions to join the Team Unity Government- led by Prime Minister Dr. Timothy Harris- as an Ambassador and Special Advisor.

“In the past several hours, a number of reports which I find necessary and compelling to address head on have come to my attention. So, as they concern me directly and would have great implications, chiefly for the people of Nevis 11, who have placed their considerable faith and trust in me as their representative in the national assembly of our great Federation, it is important to make my position very pellucid,” he said in a statement issued today ( 5th June).

He continued: “ I have never entered into discussions nor do I intent to entertain any discussions with emissaries or leaders of the Team Unity construct in respect of this matter, nor have I sought to negotiate with them or otherwise considered employment in any capacity with the present failing and embattled administration.  I can only speculate that the baseless rumours, which have been circulated in some media avenues and on social media, were designed to create mischief and instability in the minds and hearts of the people, and in particular of my constituents, simply for political advantage under the cunning guise of extending olive branches and forming alliances in the interest of national unity.   Let me make it clear once again, that I, Patrice Nisbett, as a man of integrity and honour, will continue to work for and serve only in the best interest of the people of this Federation and particularly of the people of Nevis and Nevis 11 who have charged me, as their parliamentary representative, with a great responsibility and whose mandate it is my obligation to fulfil. My allegiance remains with them.”

Nisbett pointed out that as he reflects on his years of service, he is humbled with the warm generosity of support and goodwill that his constituents have demonstrated towards me over the years.

“This been the bedrock of my commitment to public service.   Let me state unequivocally, that as the elected representative of the people of Nevis 11, it is my sole intention to serve and protect their interests, whether in government or in opposition. The rumours which have recently surfaced and sped into circulation that I have been offered, and supposedly accepted a position or employment with the Team Unity government are false and malicious and done during this time when the country is calling for transparency in government at the highest level where representatives have lost their way in their pursuit of their personal advancement,” he commented further.

Nisbett touched on his years of service given saying: “My unblemished record over the last eighteen years in politics is a testament to selfless service that I have given to my country and the people. My service as a former Attorney General and Minister in the Federal Government of St. Kitts and Nevis has never been clouded and or tainted with any scandal of bribery or any attempt to betray the loyalty and confidence reposed in me by my beloved constituents.   From my experience, whenever an election is imminent there are those who would seek to circulate rumours to discredit honourable men. It seems as if in a short time, I may once again have to call upon you my beloved constituents to renew our mandate at the Federal level.”

SUITS. BOATS AND FAMALAAYYY!!!

By:FAIR SHARE FOR ALL

Those of us in Labour who know Timothy Harris were not at all surprised at what he said and what he did not say at his town hall meeting last Sunday.

What Timothy does not seem to realise is that this is 2018.  Not 2013, 2014, 2015 or even 2016.

After having been elected on the promise to lock up Douglas for every conceivable ill under the sun, and full three years after the only person who seems to be embroiled in scandal after scandal after scandal is Timothy, the intelligentsia who were expecting so much from him feel nothing but shame and embarrassment.

All the NGO’s, all those who portrayed themselves as the conscience of the society, all those who jumped unto the Unity bandwagon have nothing but shame and embarrassment to show for their conviction that Douglas was wrong about Timothy.

SHAME AND EMBARRASSMENT.

I know this because many of them have come to me in disbelief.  Total disbelief.

They let the 16 million US/EC slide.  The Stem Cell, the Herpes, the Ren Baio scandals all were nine days talk.

But shoes and watch?

SMH!

That one is too much.

And the lot of noise on Sunday did nothing to make them feel good.  Ask Dwyer.

These people wanted answers.  Not theatricals.

And after that performance, I do not think that there is any one in the federation who doesn’t belief that the T in TUIA stands for first and second Timothy.

I have never heard a leader of a government abuse his cabinet colleagues like that.

Muddoh!  Watch ponwud!

Mouth open and tory jump out.

OMG!

Timothy let the whole world know that if it wasn’t for him, the clincher, Lindsay, Patches and Hamilton would never have won their seats.

But unlike Patches, who has remained unwaveringly loyal to him, strong in his support, Lindsay, Jonel and Mark preferred to hold secret meetings in a boat to try to unseat the “embarrassment” at the top.

I hear that positions were already been allocated.  Prime minister.  Deputy prime minister and attorney general.

According to Timothy, suits had already gone to be dry-cleaned for them to be sworn in as prime minister.

But he reminded them that none of them who were scheming could hold a candle of correction to him.

In other words, all of them in Team Unity just as corrupt as he.

Sad state of affairs for a government.

I was watching Wendy’s and Sidney Osbourne’s faces when he was making these pronouncements.  And while Mrs Huggins was nodding in agreement during Timothy’s tirade, Wendy and Sidney Osbourne seemed more than a little uneasy.

All when he was recounting that the members of PLP were asking him if he could trust them, i.e. PAM and CCM, Wendy and Sidney did not look happy at all.

He trusted the word of Vance, he said.  To date, he has not said that he trusted the word of Shawn, Lindsay or Eugene.

He trusted Patches for his strong support. But nothing of Mark.

And unlike other town hall meetings where the whole cabinet is present and apologies are made for those who are not, Timothy made it a point to let the whole world know that the ministers present were his supporters.

What a scalamity!

What classlessness!!

But one just cannot miss the irony.

Timothy, in three short years, has to be warding off a revolt of sorts against his prime ministership.

The same Timothy who was a main player in the revolt to unseat Douglas.

Douglas, after fifteen years.  Timothy, after three years.

Oh dear!  Oh my!

What goes around really comes around and harder.

Who would have thought that after three short years, members of the Team Unity cabinet would be trying to oust the leader because they just can’t take another scandal?

All who thought that Douglas grudged Timothy and wanted to hold on to power now see why Douglas was trying to keep power away from him.

We, in the federation, are faced with a serious problem.   But the solution to the problem is quite simple.

We have to vote out this “embarrassment” in the upcoming general elections.

Timothy himself has admitted that none of his cabinet colleagues has the moral authority to chastise him for his many wrongdoings.

In other words, none in the Team Unity cabinet is good for this federation.

So when those who went away want to come back home, we must open the front door for them.  We must welcome them back with open arms.

We must show Timothy and the rest of Team Unity that we are worth more than a nice watch, a pair of shoes and a bellyful.

The Problem Of Stress

In the words of Mac Miller, “Someone told me sleep was the cousin of death and followin’ the dollar finds nothin’ but stress.”

In my previous article, I mentioned that during my recent  illness I was completely stressed out mentally, physically and emotionally.

Well in today’s article, I am thanking all those persons publicly through this media house who visited and prayed for me because I fully believe that their prayer worked, and if truth be told I believe in the power of prayer.

In addition, I am also thanking the Nurses at the Sir Joseph Nathaniel France General Hospital who have helped me and others through our illnesses. They are doing a tremendous job and we all must thank them by encouraging them. Nurses keep up the good works for all of us will continue praying for all of you.

But number one of all I am thanking my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ for not only keeping me, but for being with me always, just like He promised that He will never leave nor forsake me.

Jay Winner, MD, author of Take the stress out of your Life, and director of the stress Management Program for  Sansum Clinic in Santa Barbara, California says “Stress doesn’t only make us feelawful emotionally, but it can also exacerbate just about any health condition we can think of.”

In addition, recent studies have found that there are many health problem related to stress thus stress seems to worsen or increase the risk of conditions like obesity, heart disease, Alzheimer disease, diabetes, depression, gastrointestinal problems and asthma.

Let us now continue from where we left off in our previous article.

Regardless if the stress is in the body or in the mind, the same physiological reaction takes place in the body, and the most noticeable effect of any type of stress is a marked increase of hormone secretion in the body.

The Health Experts have said that the hormone known as ACTH (or adrenocorticotropic hormone) is released in large quantities whenever stress is present.

However, this ACTH substance activates the secretion of cortisol. Cortisol in turn, enhances the production of adrenal androgens in the adrenal cortex.

In addition, the net effect of all these secretions caused by stress is to provide a sharp and immediate stimulus to the adrenal glands.

Thus, the adrenal glands sit right above the kidneys, and control many functions. Though I am pretty sure that we have heard of athletes or other people speak off “adrenalin rush.”

What some people might not know is that adrenalin is the most powerful stimulant known because stress causes adrenaline to be released and we consequently feel “stimulated.”

However, if we are constantly over stimulated by stress, we become burnt-out and incapable of responding to the stressful situations.

Therefore when some people drive in heavy city traffic or experience other intensely ‘stress-full situations their adrenal glands may actually “ache” or hurt from the constant stimulation being received.

Thus, an older gentleman, like myself, who complained of lower backaches while commuting in rush-hour traffic believed he had kidney problems. But in reality, his adrenal glands were just being overworked by the stress of commuter traffic.

Therefore, this is the danger in the stress reaction. Moreover, you can be under stress or over stimulated almost continuously.

However, please keep in mind that no one can run on “high” speed all the time, and the body eventually suffers. It is fully believed that this type of stress can provoke this adrenal reaction is widely varied.

Researchers have also discovered, however, that the following situations are sufficiently“Stressful” to spark a high ACTH release, which means the body becomes highly stimulated.

Below please find some types of stress that caused Physiological reaction:

  1. Intense heat or cold.
  2. Injections of any sort.
  3. Surgical operations.
  4. Trauma of any type (physical or emotional).
  5. Any debilitating body crisis.
  6. Emotional outbursts or anxiety attacks.

However it seems as if stress is all around us, and its sustained effects can wear us down and make us vulnerable to negative thoughts and poor living habits. But keep the faith, there is plenty of hope.

Finally, the Health Experts have clearly state that the life science program which is based entirely upon our natural adaptations, provides the correct basis  for living that allows us to with stand stress far better than if we transgress our own biological requirements and nature.

The Health Expert also say that the life science approach to stress management even long-term and emotional stress is three-fold; Exercise, Diet, and Relaxation.

Thus, these are three of the very essentials of health and well-being. So let us practice them and see how they will help us overcome stress in our daily life.

As time and space is of the utmost importance we will stop here for today, but shall continue in our next article by looking at stress management.

As I take my leave for today, I leave you with a quote by Amit Ray, Om Chanting and meditation, and a song by Suzy Kassem.

“If you want to conquer the anxiety of life, live in the moment, live in the breath.”– Amit Ray, Om Chanting and Meditation.

Apply Within

By: Suzy Kassem.

You once tell me,

You wanted to find,

Yourself in the world,

And I told you to,

First apply within,

To discover the world,

Within you.

You once told me,

You wanted to save,

The world from all its wars,

And I told you to,

First save yourself,

From the world,

And all the wars,

You put yourself,

Through.

Labour Is Well Prepared Organised And Led

Over the course of last weekend and at the start of the week (Saturday 19 and Sunday 20 May), the St.Kitts-Nevis Labour Party met in Conference. Indeed, it was the Eighty-sixth (86th) Annual Conference of the political arm of the great Labour Movement since it started out in 1932 as The Workers League.

This year witnessed certain changes. The closed (or internal) session was held on one day, namely Saturday, while the open (or public) session was held on the Sunday. From all accounts the new arrangements were highly appreciated and welcomed by most everyone.

Conference 2018 assessed the organisational and operational changes which made over the past three years, and the efforts to improve our functioning were duly examined and their outcomes assessed. Efforts were assessed as having been fruitful.

There were overwhelming and wide ranging feelings that the organisational progress which made over the past three years have most beneficially improved the Labour movement’s functioning, and that such have indeed helped to set the party on the course to take back the government for the majority of people in our country.

Conference was visibly and deeply appreciative of the leadership given the entire process by Comrade Denzil Douglas, and speaker after speaker thanked him for his dedication to the party and for his outstanding role in bringing about the much needed improvements to our organisation and to its ‘machinery’.

That was well borne out by the great enthusiasm which was displayed as delegate after delegate called for the unanimous re-election of our beloved Comrade Leader, Dr. The Rt. Hon Denzil Llewellyn Douglas, PC, MP. Conference was well and truly satisfied that he is the fittest person to lead our great movement at this particular point in time.

Dr. Douglas has proven, beyond any shadow of a doubt, that he is the fittest person to lead our movement at this particular point in time.

Conference also demonstrated, unequivocally, a recognition that Comrade Dr. Douglas is also the person best suited to lead our beloved country out of the morass into which UNITIM has landed us.

His leadership in the immediate aftermath of the ignominious ‘Devil’s Island’ fiasco, the political turmoil of the early 1990s, the terrible natural disasters of the mid- and late 1990s, the closure of the ailing sugar industry, and our enviable and truly outstanding performance in dealing with the financial and economic crisis of 2008, are all most powerful indicators that he is the person best suited to once again lift us out of our present calamity and back on to the road of progress.

The fact that those opposite have been unrelentingly hammering away at what they want us to accept as ‘the need for Labour to get the rid of him’ is itself a testimony to Comrade Douglas’ effectiveness. It is ever so pleasing to observe that delegates to Conference did NOT fall for the misleading cries of those opposed to us.

Recognising the very critical juncture at which our nation stands at this particular point in time, Conference, in our assessment, acted boldly and decisively in electing to office the top officials who now have the weighty responsibility for our party’s national affairs, for keeping us on the roadway of preparation, and for welcoming back home all those who are desirous of returning to their place of origin. And what great choices they made.

It is most worthy of note that this year’s conference elected the first woman as our party’s Deputy National Political Leader, in the person of none other than our beloved Comrade Marcella Liburd. We congratulate her most heartily, and, being fully seized of her abilities, considerable experience, and unswerving loyalty (a critically important quality at all times), we are fully confident that she will once again deliver for our cause, as indeed she has in the past. We send her our very best wishes and hope that by now she is fully recovered from her most unfortunate encounter with the Virdee flu.

Also worthy of note was the election of our young comrade Dr. Terrance Drew as our party’s National Chairman. We wish him the very best in this new area of service, and are also fully confident that he will deliver for our organisation.

A full report on the outcomes of Party Conference 2018 will be published in due course, and, in the meantime, we congratulate everyone who has been elected to serve the St.Kitts Nevis Labour Party in any capacity over the course of the next year.

This is of particular importance, given the challenges which our nation faces at this point in time, challenges which are political, financial, economic, social and cultural in nature.

Last week we reminded you that since we lost office to SCHEME UNITY in February 2015 our country has been suffering from numerous political and governmental ailments which have caused pronounced declines in various aspects of our country’s affairs.

We reiterate that the most telling of these has been a leadership deficit which has caused a political paralysis. Many there are who do not want to admit it, but recent disclosures have served to underscore the point.

It is but a matter of fact that there is a very definite split in the government, not that there was ever really much ‘togetherness’ beyond their wanting to be in power for their own self-serving reasons. It will not be much longer before the political drift (about which we have giving many warnings) will become fully manifest. Most worryingly, and as we have cautioned again and again, that will lead to general instability.

Many of the grave dangers that we face, both as a people and as a nation, have now been brought into stark relief, just as we warned in times past.

Last week we pointed that in order to deal successfully with these threats and dangers ‘we MUST be well prepared, well organised, and well led’.

It is most gratifying that our great political party went into annual conference and cemented those three points. We are indeed well prepared, well organised, and, most assuredly, well led.

We are of the view that the nation at large will in time come to recognise the importance of Conference 2018, and will eventually become very grateful that The St. Kitts Nevis Labour Party is well prepared, well organised, and very well led.

Irish abortion vote puts pressure on UK government

London (CNN)The historic result in Ireland’s referendum on abortion has piled pressure on UK Prime Minister Theresa May to reform the law in Northern Ireland, where terminations are still illegal.

Members of Parliament from across the political divide have called on the UK government to change the law in Northern Ireland, to bring it into line with the rest of the UK and Ireland.
Decision on abortion law are devolved to the Northern Ireland Assembly, but it has been suspended for more than a year, due to a political deadlock.
Abortion was legalized in the rest of the UK in 1967, but the liberalization was never extended to Northern Ireland.
“The Government must act to ensure that women in Northern Ireland have the same rights as women across the rest of the UK,” said Labour MP and Shadow Equalities Minister Dawn Butler on Twitter.
“Labour is calling for the Government immediately to begin negotiations with political parties in Northern Ireland about legislation to extend abortion rights.”
In a statement, DUP leader Arlene Foster said: “Friday’s referendum has no impact upon the law in Northern Ireland, but we obviously take note of issues impacting upon our nearest neighbor.”
“The DUP is a pro-life party and we will continue to articulate our position. It is an extremely sensitive issue and not one that should have people taking to the streets in celebration.”
More than 160 MPs, including some Conservatives, have written to May demanding she allow a referendum on relaxing the abortion laws in Northern Ireland. The UK’s Royal College of Midwives also supports such a move.
A referendum on the issue in the Irish republic to repeal a constitutional ban on most abortions returned a 2-1 landslide for the “Yes” side.
Irish Prime Minister Leo Varadkar has pledged to introduce legislation to legalize abortion in the largely Catholic nation by the end of the year.
