Cancer Foundation and Insurance Company Team Up For Special Fundraising

By: Precious Mills

BASSETERRE, St.Kitts (Wednesday 3rd October 2018) – The Essence of Hope Breast Cancer Foundation on Monday 1st October held a media launch event for breast cancer awareness month in spotlighting one of its major annual activities- ‘Pink Walk to find a cure’.

The ceremony, held at the Ocean Terrance Inn located at Fortlands in Basseterre, also saw the relaunch of the Road Angel Policy Campaign by the title sponsor of the Pink Walk- the Insurance Company of the West Indies (ICWI) geared towards assisting with a fixed fundraising arrangement.

President of Essence of Hope Breast Cancer Foundation Mary Armstrong said the group was birthed in 2009, “formed from the loss of a few girlfriends who were diagnosed with breast cancer and did not make it shortly after they were diagnosed.”

She went on to say that the organisation is made of 14 members who are dedicated and committed to help the citizens of St.Kitts and Nevis with financial assistance to men and women who are diagnosed with breast cancer.

“Breast cancer is what our organisation started as but as the years grew we’ve branched out from breast cancer to other cancers. Reason being that so many people become diagnosed with cancer and we decided that if you have someone who shows up at your doorstep and asks for help do you say ‘No, we’re just for breast cancer foundation’ or do you at least try and help? So we’re still a breast cancer foundation but we try to help everyone,” Armstrong shared.

According to her, to date the foundation has given out $20,500 and counting in financial assistance.

“Right now we have at least three persons in waiting for assistance which we will be giving shortly and the number are growing because I guess everyone knows that cancer is on the rise very much so and it’s a very expensive disease.”

ICWI Country Manager Nordia Dobbs informed that the company intends on contributing a certain percentage to the foundation over a year’s period.

“As we thought of ways to celebrate our five decades of service, we looked not to the past but to the future. What better wat to make an impact on people’s lives, their futures than to help those who need it most?”

She highlighted that over 38 years ago company chairman Dennis Lalor established the first ever female motor policy and named it The Road Angel Policy.

“This policy was so unique and one of a kind; it recognised the safety conscious female drivers by offering discounts and special benefits found nowhere else,” she boasted.
Dubs explained that the policy took place when not a lot of women were driving.

“This policy quickly became one of the corner stones of the company’s success over the year and so this in our 50th year, we would like to give back to all road angels by relaunching this signature product and offering a donation to the foundation 5% of all road angel policies written between October 2018 and October 2019.”

As gathered, ICWI is a full service general insurance company serving over 100,000 customers in eight countries including St.Kitts-Nevis. It has been the title sponsor of the group’s annual charity walk for the past three years.
Minister of Health Eugene Hamilton talked about prevention as he outlined that lives are cut short too often because of cancer.

“Cancer does not discriminate. It strikes people of all races, all creeds, all colours, all positions; whether you’re poor or rich and so because of that we must all raise awareness of this disease outcome so that we can more easily prevent it.”

“Too much of our world is focused on treating it and saying they want to find a cure for it. Let’s focus on preventing it,” he added.

Hamilton further stated that diseases threatens individuals and families alike with bankruptcy and encouraged persons to lead a healthy lifestyles.

The Essence of Hope Breast Cancer Foundation’s annual pink charity walk dubbed ‘Socks and Shades’ is slated to take place on Saturday 27th October at 6am starting at the Caribbean Cinemas complex heading over to Frigate Bay.

Local Association Focuses On Making Cricket #1 Game Again

By: Precious Mills

BASSETERRE, St.Kitts (Wednesday 3rd October 2018) – Two top officials of the St.Kitts Cricket Association, President Dennis Phillip and Vice President Charles Morton have shared the organisation’s focus to have the sport return to its number one status.

Both echoed such sentiments while speaking at a press conference held  yesterday morning (Tuesday) at Warner Park in celebrating the historic three-peat success of the Leeward Islands Cricket Champions-the St.Kitts Cricket Team- following its recent victory in Montserrat.

The media event also served as a forum to highlight the work of the cricket association and as well as to give reporters an opportunity to get updates through a question and answer segment.

According to Phillip: “We have been doing a lot of work in the background with our teams and cricket on a whole.  We have had a number of tournaments over the past couple of years [that] we have been in office and this is what would be our second term leading up to four years and in those three and half years at this point, we believe that we would have achieved not just the three wins but we have also won the under 15 when we started and programmes that are in place now are our new programmes that we have implemented including tournaments etc. and we want to continue on that trend once are given the opportunity to continue that is.”

Morton disclosed: “Three years ago, the current management under the leadership of President Phillip undertook the mantle to embark on a new direction. We decided that we wanted to restore the product; bring back patrons to the games, establish a winning formula by having our elite players join a contingency programme to develop their skills, win championships and place more Kittitians on the Leeward Islands Team. I dare say that we are on the right path. Thanks to God, thanks to you and thanks to all supporters of cricket.”

“We have been working steadfastly as President Phillip indicated with a number of initiatives to have cricket regain its number one status in St.Kitts. It’s not there yet but I know based on the fact that we have you here present and the fact that we are speaking to the entire nation and to the world via social media and interlinks that we are intending to make sure that cricket becomes again the number one sport for Caribbean people,” he added.

Asked by this reporter about what needs to be done specifically to boost the public’s interest in cricket, Morton talked about playing cricket with friends just outside his parents’ home at Greenlands pasture in Basseterre.

“We’re not too old but when we were younger, the focus for cricket was West Indies Cricket. We were the champions of the world and persons like to associate with champions and winners. What happened is that every young person played cricket… Everywhere we had an opportunity to play cricket, we played cricket.”

He continued: “And we want to see that kind of interest again as young people. The playing of cricket in the streets, that where we learnt our game…granted it was soft ball but we were playing cricket and so cricket became part of us; it was in our DNA. Now, unfortunately, like you see here it’s a tablet, phones…we have so many things that distract us as individuals and we want to be able to have cricket so focal in the minds of our youth that it just becomes natural to want to play and I believe I believe that once that inclination is developed and developed to a point that they become so interested because right now we have four players on the Leewards team and  we had two players who represented on a West Indies B team over the last couple months.”

Those two players are Jeremiah Louis and Sheeno Berridge, praised by Morton as “two excellent cricketers.”

“So that should speak some interest in young people because there are opportunities and so we  are of the view that if we continue to foster and create the  environment for persons to  develop themselves within the game of cricket  then other person would say ‘well, I want to be like Sheena, I want to be like Jere- and I believe that that will come,” he added.

According to Morton, Cricket West Indies “need to start winning too and winning consistently to get that fever; that Caribbean fever that we once had.”

Reflecting further on past years, he remarked: “People used to walk around with transistor radios listening to cricket because they wanted to know what the West Indies Team was doing at all times. If we could get at least half of that interest restored because of our winning then I believe we would have made quite an impact and some progress.”

Phillip pointed out that lots of things have changed as it relates to cricket hosting on the island which would be addressed.

“Thursday afternoons would have been a half holiday. You had an opportunity to play cricket then. Now, you have just a weekend basically unless you’re playing under lights. Most games play under lights simply because you get a much higher attendance and so forth. All of that we’re looking into. We are looking to convert quite a number of ground facilities around the island to have lighting so even within the communities, you can go out and practice in the evening.”

He went on to say that the association is not just focusing on the men only but also women, noting that the women have been converted from soft ball to hard ball.

“They are now competing for a spot on cricket West Indies women team just as the men are. Over the past two years, we have had three females going off to play for Leewards in the hopes of -just like the men-  getting promoted to the cricket west indies female team. You know they are winners; and have been winning more than the men in some cases so more.”

Driver Of Prisoner Transport Van Blamed For Intersection Crash

By: Spokesman Newsroom

BASSETERRE, St.Kitts (Thursday 27th September 2018)– Eyewitnesses have pointed at the driver of a government-owned vehicle for causing the traffic accident which took place shortly before 6:00 PM at the intersection of Fort and Cayon Streets on Tuesday this week.

The crash involved vehicles van G 17- ( Ministry of National Security HMS Prison Prisoner Transport Vehicle) and motor jeep PB 1331, driven by a male and female respectively.

According to eyewitness reports, the van driver was unquestionably at fault in causing that collision.
As gathered, G17 was travelling westerly along Cayon Street while the other vehicle was turning east onto Cayon Street while moving off Fort Street.

One motorist explained that while travelling along Fort Street on the left hand side, PB 1331 was on the right side.

“She was on the right and I was in left lane when vehicles were travelling along Fort Street came to a stop at the red lights signal. When the light turned green, the driver moved out of the stop turning east along Cayon Street when the crash happened. She is not wrong.”

Additionally, while on the scene, this media house observed a passer-by speaking to a police officer, also defending the driver of PB 1331.

“Officer, she nuh wrong. The light was green on her side when she turned. She nuh wrong officer,” he said.

This media house understands that someone was being transported to the hospital at the time in the government-owned vehicle.

Some bystanders blamed the driver of G17 for not having on a siren while others said that the siren was put on after the crash while some indicated that the siren was put on just when the driver of the government vehicle noticed that he was not going to catch the green light.

Additionally, other people expressed that the siren was not loud enough.

“You could barely hear that siren”, commented someone.

This media house has been unsuccessful in getting information on the incident from the Traffic Department.

Opposition: Officer Hodge Called To Be Arrested In Uniform Following Off-Duty Offenses

By: Spokesman Newsroom
BASSETERRE, St. Kitts (Thursday 27th September 2018)
– The Deputy Leader of the opposition St. Kitts-Nevis Labour Party (SKNLP), Marcella Liburd, has revealed that Constable Lennox Hodge was not arrested on the day he was driving but rather in his uniform following his day off from work.

“What is more questionable is that Hodge was not stopped while he was driving. Hodge works in Nevis. He was off on Independence Day [19th September]. He was off duty when he was back at his job on the next day. He was called to down to St. Kitts in his uniform to be arrested for driving with an expired license the day before.”

So said Liburd at the party’s monthly press conference held on Wednesday (26th September) while speaking on the topic of the police officer at the center of alleged political victimisation, Constable Lennox Hodge-of the Nevis division- who is currently out on bail and is expected to face a judge next month in answering to two traffic-related offenses.

Liburd, who is a lawyer by profession, highlighted that she is not aware that driving with an expired drivers’ license was an arrestable offense, adding that, to her knowing it is a ticketable offense.

She made it clear however that: “I am in no way making an excuse for Constable Hodge for not realising that his drivers’ license was expired. It was an error on his part”.

Liburd then continued by pointing out that she is aware of many situations where persons who were driving with an expired license and were only ticketed for the offense.
She further noted that Hodge was not stopped at the time of driving and up to the time of his arrest he had not been asked to present his drivers’ license.

Liburd questions the means and procedures that was used to garner information about Hodge’s license since he was not stopped while driving.

“…More outrageous… How is it that they know his license was expired? They were determined that Hodge should be punished for driving Dr. Douglas!”

Liburd claimed that during the arrest, Officer Hodge was also told that he should not have parked Dr. Douglas’ vehicle in the area where he parked it and should not have gone down on the grounds to collect Dr. Douglas.

This, according to Liburd, was the real problem.

She shared her opinion that Prime Minister Dr. Timothy Harris was upset that Dr. Douglas was in the convoy for Independence.

“The real problem was that Timothy Harris once being told that Dr. Douglas was in the convoy for Independence irked him to the bone. What irked him even more was when he heard of all the cheers they received while driving in the convoying,” she commented.

Liburd-the Parliamentary Representative for Constituency Two- said she along with Parliamentary Representative for Constituency Three Konris Maynard were also passengers in the vehicle.

Constable Hodge was charged for Driving Without a Valid and Unexpired Driver’s License and for Driving Without Insurance on Thursday 20th September.

He was driving a privately owned vehicle at the time of the incident.

On Friday 21st September, the officer received bail in the sum of $10,000 with two sureties for his appearance at the Basseterre Magistrate Court come Thursday 11th October 2018.
