Clinton says Trump remarks at Kavanaugh swearing-in undermine Supreme Court

By Mick Krever and Devan Cole, CNN

 October 9, 2018

(CNN)Hillary Clinton said Tuesday that President Donald Trump staged a “political rally” at Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh’s ceremonial swearing-in that “further undermined the image and integrity of the court.”

“What was done last night in the White House was a political rally. It further undermined the image and integrity of the court,” Clinton, Trump’s Democratic 2016 election opponent, told CNN’s Christiane Amanpour in an exclusive interview.

“And that troubles me greatly. It saddens me. Because our judicial system has been viewed as one of the main pillars of our constitutional government. So I don’t know how people are going to react to it. I think, given our divides, it will pretty much fall predictably between those who are for and those who are against,” Clinton said.

“But the President’s been true to form,” she continued. “He has insulted, attacked, demeaned women throughout the campaign — really for many years leading up to the campaign. And he’s continued to do that inside the White House.”

When Trump hosted Kavanaugh and his family at a ceremonial swearing-in at the White House on Monday night, he apologized “on behalf of our nation” to the newly minted justice for the difficult confirmation process.

“On behalf of our nation, I want to apologize to Brett and the entire Kavanaugh family for the terrible pain and suffering you have been forced to endure,” Trump said. “Those who step forward to serve our country deserve a fair and dignified evaluation. Not a campaign of political and personal destruction based on lies and deception. What happened to the Kavanaugh family violates every notion of fairness, decency and due process.”
Democrats must be tougher, Clinton says

Just days after Democrats lost their bitter fight to keep Kavanaugh off the high court, Clinton told Amanpour that her husband, former President Bill Clinton, thinks that “Democrats have to be tougher.”

“Bill had to be incredibly strong — first to get elected, then to get re-elected and to survive. And it was not easy by any means, obviously. But he really believes that Democrats have to be tougher,” she said, adding that he also thinks the party will “have to stand up to the bullying and intimidation” from Republicans.

Clinton told Amanpour that she thinks that in the future her husband will “have things to say about his own experience and how it applies here.”

The former President has previously been vocal about his views on Trump’s presidency. In June, he said impeachment hearings would have begun if a Democratic president, instead of Trump, were in power and the Russia investigation was as far along as it was at that time. Clinton himself was impeached in 1998 by the House, but the Senate acquitted him, preventing his removal from office.

The former secretary of state also told Amanpour that Democrats need to draw a hard line against Republicans.

“You cannot be civil with a political party that wants to destroy what you stand for, what you care about,” she said. “That’s why I believe, if we are fortunate enough to win back the House and or the Senate, that’s when civility can start again.”

“But until then, the only thing Republicans seem to recognize is strength,” she said.

Nikki Haley: US ambassador to UN resigns

Source: www.bbc.com (TUESDAY 9TH OCTOBER 2018)

US President Donald Trump has accepted the resignation of UN Ambassador Nikki Haley.

He told reporters in the Oval Office that she would be leaving the post at the end of the year after doing “an incredible job”.

Joined by the former South Carolina governor in the Oval Office, he invited her to come back in a different role. “You can have your pick,” he said.

Mrs. Haley was confirmed as US envoy to the UN in January 2017.

The White House revolving door

Mr. Trump said Mrs. Haley had told him six months ago she wanted to take some time off.

Mr. Trump and Mrs. Haley appeared together at the UN General Assembly last month
She told reporters that despite speculation, she was not planning to run for president in 2020 and would be campaigning for Mr. Trump, who has already announced his re-election bid.

“Thank you, Mr. President. It has been an honour of a lifetime,” she said alongside Mr. Trump.

The president said Mrs. Haley “has been very special to me, she has done an incredible job, she is a fantastic person, very importantly, but she is also somebody that gets it”.

“We’ve done a fantastic job together,” he continued. “We’ve solved a lot of problems, and we’re in the process of solving a lot of problems.”

“Hopefully you’ll be coming back at some point, right,” Mr. Trump said. “Maybe a different capacity, you can have your pick.” Mrs. Haley laughed.

Mr. Trump added that he would be naming her replacement in the next two to three weeks.

“She’s made it a very glamorous position, more importantly, a more important position. So we have many people that want to do it and they’re very good people,” he said.

Who is Nikki Haley?

  • Nikki Haley, born Nimrata Randhawa to Indian immigrant parents, was raised as a Sikh in Bamberg, South Carolina, later converting to Christianity
  • Her first job as a 13-year-old was bookkeeping for her family’s clothing store
  • In 2010, she became South Carolina’s first female and first minority governor – and the youngest governor in the country. She was re-elected to the post in 2014, serving until she joined the Trump cabinet in 2016
  • Mrs. Haley gained national prominence for her response to a mass shooting in June 2015 at a predominantly African-American church in Charleston, South Carolina when she removed the Confederate flag from the state capitol grounds, receiving praise from both sides of the aisle
  • Before becoming the US envoy, Mrs. Haley had little foreign policy experience, though she did travel abroad as governor to broker economic deals for South Carolina
  • While she eventually did back Mr. Trump, she did not endorse him during the 2016 presidential campaign, instead backing Florida Senator Marco Rubio
  • Mrs. Haley is married to Army National Guard Captain Michael Haley, and the couple have two teenage childrenHer exit comes after she served as the temporary president of the UN Security Council for one month.

Mrs. Haley’s Twitter bio has already removed all references to her role as UN ambassador.

In April, she clashed with the White House when a Trump aide suggested she had prematurely announced a new round of sanctions against Russia.

White House economic adviser Larry Kudlow told reporters Mrs Haley had got “ahead of the curve” by previewing the policy, putting her remarks down to “momentary confusion”.

She fired back hours later telling Fox News: “With all due respect, I don’t get confused.”

The daughter of immigrants from India, Mrs Haley was a frequent and early critic of Mr Trump during his election campaign whilst she served as the Republican governor of South Carolina.

In December 2017, she said that the women who had accused Mr Trump of sexual assault “should be heard”.

At one point she suggested that Mr Trump’s rhetoric could trigger a world war.

BBC New York correspondent Nick Bryant said she had formed a partnership with UN General Secretary Antonio Guterres to protect the UN against Mr Trump’s anti-globalist agenda.

Her with-us-or-against-us approach grated on many diplomats in the chamber but she was widely considered to be an internationalist ally, our correspondent adds.

Republican lawmakers swiftly praised Mrs Haley after the news broke.
Retiring Speaker of the House Paul Ryan said she “has been a clear, consistent, and powerful voice for America’s interests and democratic principles on the world stage”.

“She challenged friend and foe to be better,” he added.

South Carolina Senator Lindsey Graham said she had been “a true agent of reform” at the UN.

Fatal, fiery domestic dispute in Manchester

MANDEVILLE, Manchester — A family dispute in Manchester on the weekend that left one brother dead and one in police custody has also left their mother and four of their siblings homeless after her house was burnt down.

The deceased has been identified as 22-year-old Anthony Campbell.

Reports from the police are that Campbell and his brother, who has a different father, lived at the same house in Richmond and had a dispute on Saturday night, which resulted in him being stabbed. He succumbed to the injuries in hospital.

Police investigations have been ongoing to determine exactly what happened.

There are speculations that the dispute resulted between the brothers because of an altercation that Campbell had with their mother.

Reports are that following this incident the house in which Campbell’s mother lived with four of her children was set afire.

Allegations are that Campbell’s father may have had a role in the arson and is in custody; however, charges have not been laid.

The mother, Mayor of Mandeville Donovan Mitchell said, is a sister of his sister.

He said that he stepped in to help on Sunday to find the mother and her four children who lived with her in Richmond a place to stay.

“They can stay [where they are now] until other arrangements are made,” Mitchell told the Jamaica Observer, adding that he has started to seek support.

Mitchell said that the two youngest children are in high school and administrators from their respective institutions have intervened to ensure that they receive counselling.

Campbell reportedly died leaving an infant son while the older brother, who is now in police custody, is said to have no children.

Saturday’s incident follows another issue of domestic violence in the Cross Keys area of the parish last Thursday, in which a woman allegedly stabbed her common-law husband to death.

Manchester has had issues with domestic violence over the years, which led to the formation of the Manchester Dispute Resolution and Violence Prevention Association in 2012.

Chairman of the organisation, Pastor Dr Michael Harvey, said initiatives such as counselling, training for para-professional counsellors and first responders in conflict resolution, and parenting seminars, including special programmes for young fathers, have been undertaken.

Some income-generating opportunities have also been incorporated.

“We have made tremendous progress,” he said.

Harvey said that there has been a decline in the incidence of domestic violence up to 2017 and what has happened recently may be signs of an upsurge.

He said that the Dispute Resolution and Violence Prevention Association is committed to working to help to address the issue and expand its reach, but lack of funding is causing a level of difficulty.

Harvey said that they have managed to do the work that they have done to date with funding from Members of Parliament and through access to the resources at the Community Counselling and Restorative Justice Centre operated by Northern Caribbean University.

Death toll in Haiti earthquake rises to 15; 333 injured

Sourced From: Associated Press

The death toll from a 5.9 earthquake that hit Haiti over the weekend rose to 15 people with 333 injured, authorities said Monday, as thousands of people slept outdoors fearing aftershocks would topple their cracked homes.

Haiti’s civil protection agency said it will soon deploy 70 soldiers to the Nord-Ouest and Artibonite provinces that were hardest hit, noting it already sent 14 soldiers along with nurses and doctors to the area.

Thousands of people along Haiti’s north coast dragged mattresses and chairs outside after a strong 5.2 magnitude aftershock on Sunday rattled cinderblock homes already cracked by Saturday’s earthquake.

Among them was Marc-Sena Docteur, a 24-year-old carpenter whose girlfriend died in the earthquake.

“Now I’m left with a 9-month-old baby with no aid at all,” he said. “I’m still crying. I don’t know what I’m going to do without her.”

The walls of the room that the couple had been renting for a year collapsed, and he and the baby have been sleeping outdoors since the quake.

Sunday’s aftershock caused panic on streets where emergency teams were providing relief to victims. The U.S. Geological Survey said the epicenter of the aftershock was located 9.8 miles (15.8 kilometers) north-northwest of Port-de-Paix, which is about 136 miles (219 kilometers) from the capital of Port-au-Prince.

Unlike most other natural disasters, there’s no known way (yet) to predict when and where an earthquake will strike. Therefore, it’s essential to stay prepared, especially if you are living in an area prone to frequent seismic activities. These suggestions would not only help ensure your safety, but reduce property damage to a certain extent.

Therefore, it’s essential to stay prepared, especially if you are living in an area prone to frequent seismic activities. These suggestions would not only help ensure your safety, but reduce property damage to a certain extent.

On Monday, Haiti’s Ministry of Communication released figures stating that at least 15 people had died, nine in Port-de-Paix, one in Saint-Louis du Nord and 5 in Gros Morne. Among the dead were a 5-year-old boy crushed by his collapsing house.

Impoverished Haiti, where many live in tenuous circumstances, is vulnerable to earthquakes and hurricanes. A vastly larger magnitude 7.1 quake damaged much of the capital in 2010 and killed an estimated 300,000 people.

Etanvie Dimorne, a 50-year-old mason, said people have to rebuild stronger given the earthquakes that have hit Haiti. He lost his home in Saturday’s quake and is now sleeping under a tarp in someone’s yard.

“Last night it rained,” he said. “I have to sleep under difficult conditions.”
President Jovenel Moise urged people to donate blood and asked international aid agencies to coordinate with local agencies to avoid duplicated efforts. The government did not provide an estimate of the damages.

The quake was felt only lightly in the capital, as well as in the neighboring Dominican Republic and in eastern Cuba, where no damage was reported.

In Haiti, officials have struggled to shore up buildings despite the two major fault lines along Hispaniola, which is the island shared with the Dominican Republic.

Pierre Jacques Baudre, a farmer and father of seven, said he was afraid to return to his home after one wall built with rocks and cement crumbled.

“The house can fall at any time,” he said.

BASSETERRE, St.Kitts (Monday 8th October 2018)-This media house is currently following information received which alleges that before Officer Lennox Hodge got arrested for traffic related offenses-a matter currently tainted with public controversy over political victimisation – sometime before that time period, he was told not to be around a certain member of the St.Kitts-Nevis Labour Party Opposition during his off time from work.

While who allegedly told him so and why is not known, a source has pointed to party politics.

This media house understands that Officer Hodge, who is now stationed in Nevis, originally hails from Constituency Six for which Opposition Leader Dr. Denzil Douglas is the Parliamentary Representative.

The officer who had a court date set for Thursday 11th October at the Basseterre Magistrate Court, made an early appearance  on Thursday 4th October, and the matter was adjourned until Friday 9th November.

Officer Hodge was charged for Driving Without a Valid and Unexpired Driver’s License and for Driving Without Insurance on Thursday 20th September for operating a privately owned vehicle, and received bail in the sum of $10,000 with two sureties the next day.

Widespread public debate links Constable Hodge’s arrest taking place the day after driving Dr. Douglas to the recent Independence parade held at the Warner Park Cricket Stadium.

Party Deputy Leader Marcella Liburd (of Constituency Two) and Konris Maynard of Constituency Three were also in the vehicle.

By: Drizel Hanley

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts (Sunday 7th October 2018)– Yesterday’s  brazen broad daylight shooting in Sandy Point has claimed the life of one of its villagers and left another injured, now taking the Federation’s homicide count for 2018 to 24.

The community of Sandy Point was sent in a state of shock and fear after 35-year-old Elroy ‘Stanny’ Williams of Crab Hill was shot to death and Steve Woodruff of Cleverly Hill, Sandy Point was injured following a shooting incident.
