Shocking Car Crash Explained

By: Precious Mills

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts (Friday 19th October 2018)-The aftermath of one of the latest traffic accidents which happened over the past weekend along the Frigate Bay Road  has left many people shocked and puzzled as to how exactly did that crash occur and are equally saying the driver is lucky to be alive.

This reporter spoke exclusively with an officer at the Traffic Department this week who gave details about that collision and has cautioned motorists to be practice general road safety at all times in the interest of themselves and other users alike.

Reportedly, the accident took place on Saturday 13th October at about 5:20 AM involving PA 3858 driven by Mohan Kotwani, a student at the Windsor University School of Medicine.

As gathered, the circumstances are that Kotwani was travelling from Basseterre to Frigate Bay and at the junction leading into Earl Morne, he was objected by an unknown vehicle coming out of the said junction at the Earl Morne area which turned right along the Frigate Bay Road towards Basseterre.

“…and so a result driver Kotwani mashed breaks and lost control colliding into a guard rail on the right side of the road and so as a result he was trapped and was extricated (freed) by the Fire and Rescue Services and later transported to the Joseph N. France General by EMS [Emergency Medical Services] personnel and kept at the hospital,” the Traffic Department officer said.

Kotwani was the only occupant of the vehicle.

In observing the importance of practicing road safety, the contact person at the Traffic Department informed this reporter about the situation which apparently led to the crash.

“The circumstances are that the person exiting the junction might have failed to give way and so actions like these result in unwarranted collisions.”

He added: “Drivers have to be mindful at all times of other users when they are on the road factors like oncoming traffic, time of day and conditions of the road.”
He pointed out that the Frigate Bay Road tends to be busy.

“Traffic might not be heavy at times but you have to be alert for the unexpected because such circumstances can result in accidents,” he warned.

Additionally, a reminder was given that the speed limit along the Frigate Bay Road and built up areas is 20MPH while in non-built up areas, which describes non- residential communities, the speed limit is 40MPH.

The officer said there are some areas along the Frigate Bay Road which allows motorists to travel at 30MPH.

Something ‘Natta’ Right About It

By: Spokesman Newsroom

BASSETERRE, St.Kitts (Friday 19th October 2018)– This media house has gathered that on the day customs officer Leon Natta-Nelson (widely known as Leon Natta) was arrested last week, a letter was addressed to him from the office of his expected political opponent Prime Minister Dr. Timothy Harris pointing at his party politics activity.

While Natta is not without blame by critics for having missed the timeframe to renew the license for his legally obtained firearm, many people-including two top political and social commentators Terry Adams and Austin Edinborough-are of the view that the young man’s recent arrest could have been avoided.

Edinborough and Adams, a former police officer and customs officer respectively both aired their views on the subject matter this week during the call in segment of Freedom FM’s Monday 15th October ‘Issues’ edition.

Adams is of the view that Natta’s arrest was politically motivated while Edinborough believes that such is the latest episode of police officers abusing their power of arrest in his expressed concerns that St.Kitts-Nevis is becoming a police state.

Though unofficially announced by the opposition St.Kitts-Nevis Labour Party (SKNLP), Natta is expected to contest the Constituency Seven seat going up against PM Harris who is the Minister of National Security.

Adams has shared why he thinks Natta’s arrest is political.

“The Prime Minister says the law is the law and that is quite true but I believe Mr. Natta arrest was political. Mr. Natta would have said to me once that he was a very, very close friend of the Harris family; he told me that close. The only obvious reason why they depart was because he said he (Natta) can never be associated with PAM; he said he would have said that to the Harris family…and it appears to be likely that that is the only reason that would have caused the falling out,” commented Adams.”

The former customs officer has advised police to be more careful in dealing with such matters saying: “The customs [department] does agency functions of the police, on and behalf of the police as it relates to the importation of firearms and ammunition and so when you are going to arrest a customs officer and humiliate him for something you could have cautioned him of or even suspend the license [and] not renew it let’s say for a year that would not have a bad punishment.”

“Truth is Mr. Natta has no right to be letting his license run up to October… so I can’t excuse him…but you have to be tactful when you doing these things…and because he erred you throw him to the dogs, under the bus? Again, what you think his peers and his juniors going to be thinking?” he added.

Adams also bashed the disciplinary course of action that Natta has received.

“Natta is now pulled before the public service commission for meddling with politics while being a civil servant. What happen to his constitutional right? What happen to his constitutional right…freedom of speech…freedom to assembly, what is happening to that? The Constitution is the highest law of the land and St.Kitts-Nevis people, we must be guided by that and the police must be guided by that as well. Nothing supersedes as the Constitution. As a man who criticise the Prime Minister, you must say he dabbling in politics? If a man decides to run against you in due time yes he must resign but before that you can’t punish him.”

Meanwhile Edinborough is of the view that the police should have handled the matter differently.

“Leon Natta, he is a holder of a firearm which he was granted permission to import and he failed to renew his license. When I was there, there are procedures that we followed but the event that it happens, what the police should have done and must have done after time has passed if they don’t want to notify him is to ask him to surrender the weapon until he fixes the permission to have it if that is case I don’t know. It doesn’t mean that he would not have or could not have been charged for failing to renew but he is a customs officer. Where is the fear of abscond? Where the fear of flight risk… where is it? Why do you have to think that you need to arrest and why does a magistrate think they should sign a warrant for such an arrest?”

On Wednesday 10th October, Natta was formally arrested and charged for failing to renew his Firearm Users License between February 01, 2018 and October 07, 2018.

The weapon, along with 25 rounds of ammunition, were confiscated by police two days before on Monday 8th October.

He subsequently received bail in the sum of $10,000 with two sureties and is slated to appear before the Basseterre Magistrate in December.

As understood, a letter dated10th October to Natta from the Human Resource Management Department in the Office of the Prime Minister revealed that he has broken the Public Service (Conduct and Ethics of Officers) Code as it has received “an adverse report of [his] involvement in political activity.”

Natta is said to have received the letter this week on Wednesday 17th October which comes seven days (one week) after.

That formal piece of communication also highlighted “that on or about the end of June 2018, you Leon Natta-Nelson, did introduce yourself to a resident of Christ Church Village, Christ Church, St. Kitts, as a candidate of the St. Kitts-Nevis Labour Party running against the Hon. Dr. Timothy Harris for the next general election.”

SKN Nyabinghi Group Observes 1935 Italy Invasion Of Ethiopia

By: Precious Mills

BASSETERRE, St.Kitts (Friday 19th October 2018)– The Rastafari Nyabinghi Theocracy Church of His and Her Imperial Majesty recently observed the 83rd anniversary of the 1935 Italy invasion of Ethiopia with an annual sunset Nyabinghi session held at Irie Lime Farm in Sandy Point on the actual commemorative date, Wednesday 3rd October.

Ras Iyah during a recent interview with this reporter spoke about the historical significance of the event which took place on the continent of Africa.

“In 1935 [3rd October], there an invasion occurred in Ethiopia…an invasion of the Italian people who crossed the border to engage on Ethiopian soil to engage a territorial control of the Ethiopians for their sovereignty and their human dignity … and that is why we are here to pay our homage as we have done.”

He went on further to say: “It was seldom to see how Ethiopia that has a population of 2 million and Italy that have a population of over 40 million can claim to go after a country of that magnitude just for territorial control because as Italy stated if it doesn’t have Ethiopia as a branch of its colony, it don’t have nothing to deal with on the context of the African continent so we know that from history…”

According to the Rasta brethren: “We always embark on acknowledging that invasion as the Nyabinghi because we see it fit to acknowledge our ancestors, our forebears who laid the path for I and I to be here so we won’t be feeling like it’s just us alone but it’s us and also our forebears and ancestors with the power of the Most High who guide us through the day of life. So give thanks for those who have suffered a cause and we would always remember others but that was the specific time to mark the horrific invasion of the Italians forces…”

“We see some changes that have come after, and His Majesty has always echoed these sentiments of seeing the cause of human rights and human dignity to be uphold as a principal in life and the integrity of our people social will so we are call for our people who were faced with such atrocities during the 1935 for their names to be recognised for the suffering that they faced and the death toll at that time and so that’s why we are celebrating this hallmark of remembering the atrocities,” Ras Iyah added.
Additionally, he highlighted the vision of the organisation in showing light on such a historical occurrence “as part of our calendar year.”

“We give thanks to remember the lives of our fallen martyrs who were in that fight for the rally cause for Ethiopia not to be controlled. The word ‘control’ is significant to Ethiopians because we know basically we are sovereign people and we never wanted any invaders or foreigners to feel they have nay authority to trample our sovereign right so even though they were occupied at a five-year span, they were still rallying the cause for their full liberation from the Italians so they faced a lot of trouble during that time during the five-year period but we really look at the 1935 …the horrific ways that were really played out upon Ethiopia and Ethiopia people which cannot be forgotten and left out, and so this is a page in our history.”

Ras Iyah underlined the fundamental of what exactly is being observed about the 1935 invasion.

“We are not celebrating the Italian invasion, we are observing the atrocities that was meted out against countless Ethiopians- men, women and children and even the animals were attacked by mustard gas that was outlawed by the League of nation which is now called the United Nations so we know there was injustice perpetrated against the Ethiopia and the League of Nation stand by and let that atrocity which led to World War 2 because of the evil and selfishness they would not uphold the principle which they have signed in the treaty of not letting a country of more engage in aggression and that aggression was outlawed and we still see our Ethiopians being faced with that at that time.”

Hunger rising in Africa after prolonged decline: WHO on World Food Day

AFRICA

For most people the world over, there is food available all year round. The same cannot be said of millions living elsewhere in the world.

The United Nations under the auspices of the Food and Agriculture organization, FAO, has thus slated every October 16 annually as ‘World Food Day.’

Quite contrary to its name, it necessarily is not a day to share food but to raise global awareness on the food situation especially as concerns those with little or nothing to eat.

There is usually a global celebration at the FAO headquarters in Rome, Italy, but countries across the world also hold national and local level events to commemorate the day.

Hunger on the rise: Bad news for Africa

The World Health Organization, WHO, African region has today disclosed that hunger is on the rise in Africa after a prolonged decline.

“Nearly 14 million under-fives are wasted, 59 million are stunted due to undernutrition. Food security is a must!

“The African Region has the highest burden of foodborne diseases: 91 million fall sick and 137,000 die from foodborne diseases. Everyone has a right to safe food,” WHO said.

WORLD FOOD DAY GLOBAL CEREMONY

FAO Goodwill Ambassadors for Nutrition, the King of Lesotho and Queen Letizia of Spain will be joined by the UN Rome-based Agency Heads and other key players in the effort to achieve Zero Hunger at the global World Food Day ceremony held at FAO Headquarters in Rome on 16 October.

FAO celebrates World Food Day each year on 16 October to commemorate the founding of the Organization in 1945. Events are organized in over 130 countries across the world, making it one of the most celebrated days of the UN calendar.

Together with the global ceremony at FAO headquarters in Rome, these events promote worldwide awareness and action for those who suffer from hunger and for the need to ensure food security and nutritious diets for all.

As well as Australia, the tour will see them visit New Zealand, Fiji and Tonga.

Speaking in Sydney, Prince Harry said: “Thank you for the incredibly warm welcome and the chance to meet so many Aussies from all walks of life.

“We also genuinely couldn’t think of a better place to announce the upcoming baby, boy or girl.”

Top Saudi leadership ‘strongly denies’ knowledge in journalist’s disappearance

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said Saudi Arabia’s top leaders on Tuesday “strongly denied” any knowledge of what happened to missing journalist Jamal Khashoggi inside the Saudi consulate in Istanbul.

Pompeo said he met with King Salman, the King’s son, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, and Foreign Minister Adel al-Jubeir. In each of those meetings, “the Saudi leadership strongly denied any knowledge of what took place in their consulate in Istanbul,” Pompeo said.
“We had direct and candid conversations. I emphasized the importance of conducting a thorough, transparent, and timely investigation, and the Saudi leadership pledged to deliver precisely on that.”
“My assessment from these meetings is that there is serious commitment to determine all the facts and ensure accountability, including accountability for Saudi Arabia’s senior leaders or senior officials,” Pompeo said.
Saudi Arabia's King Salman, right meets with US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo in Riyadh.

The visit came as sources told CNN that the Saudis are preparing a report that will say the Washington Post columnist died in a botched interrogation intended to lead to his abduction from Turkey. On Tuesday, sources told CNN that a high-ranking official close to the crown prince’s inner circle oversaw a botched interrogation that led to Khashoggi’s death.
Pompeo will fly to Ankara Wednesday to meet with Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu, Nauert said.

Flurry of meetings

Pompeo was met at the airport in Riyadh on Tuesday by the Saudi foreign minister, and undertook a flurry of engagements with top officials throughout the day.
Pompeo’s meeting with the King was relatively brief. Based on the arrival and departure times of his motorcade, CNN estimates the encounter can have lasted no more than 15 minutes. Pompeo met with the Crown Prince for about 35 to 40 minutes, and had dinner with him later.
Turkish authorities have said privately that Khashoggi was killed at the consulate in Istanbul as his fiancée, Hatice Cengiz, waited outside. Saudi Arabia has previously insisted he left the building alive, but Cengiz says she never saw him again.
On Tuesday, his family issued a statement in which they acknowledged for the first time that the journalist was no longer alive.
“The strong moral and legal responsibility which our father instilled in us obliges us to call for the establishment of an independent and impartial international commission to inquire into the circumstances of his death,” they said in the statement.

The Turkish investigation

A Turkish official told CNN on Tuesday that Khashoggi’s body had been cut up after he was killedin the consulate.
At a press conference in Ankara, the Turkish foreign minister said Saudi Arabia had not yet acknowledged its role in Khashoggi’s disappearance.
“We didn’t receive any confession or information from Saudi Arabia,” Cavusoglu said, adding that Turkey expected to get more details about the Saudi position when Pompeo arrives in Turkey on Wednesday.
CCTV footage showed vehicles moving from the consulate building to the nearby consul general’s residence on October 2. An anticipated search on Tuesday of the consul general’s residence did not take place. In the meantime, the Consul General himself, Mohammed Otaibi, left Turkey on Tuesday, the semiofficial Anadolu news agency said. Turkish investigators said the search will take place Wednesday, according to state broadcaster TRT.
A Turkish forensic police officer works in Saudi Arabia's consulate in Istanbul on October 15, 2018, during the investigation over missing Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi.

On Monday, after CNN reporters saw a cleaning crew enter the main consulate building, Turkish officials conducted an investigation of the facility that lasted well into the evening.
By the time Turkish investigators gained access, a fresh coat of paint had been applied “everywhere” inside the building, a Turkish official told CNN Tuesday.

International pressure mounts

Saudi Arabia has been under intense international pressure to explain Khashoggi’s apparent death after he visited the consulate on October 2 to obtain papers that would have allowed him to marry his Turkish fiancée.
The affair has created a diplomatic rift between Saudi Arabia and the West and led to international firms pulling out of a high-profile summit in Riyadh. The CEOs of three top banks — Standard Chartered, HSBC and Credit Suisse — announced their withdrawal from the conference Tuesday.
International Monetary Fund Managing Director Christine Lagarde’s office said she is postponing her upcoming trip to the Middle East, which included a stop in Riyadh for the conference, known as “Davos in the Desert.”
UK Opposition Leader Jeremy Corbyn said Khashoggi’s disappearance calls into question the close relationship many Western countries have with Saudi Arabia and called for an immediate suspension of arms trade with the kingdom. He added that there needs to be an international investigation into the events in Turkey, describing it as an “abominable tragedy.”
During Pompeo’s visit, President Trump called the crown prince and the King’s son “conveyed that a serious and credible investigation is already underway, Pompeo said.
“He pledged that the work of the Saudi public prosecutor will produce a full and complete conclusion with full transparency for the world to see.”
United Nations human rights chief Michelle Bachelet called on Riyadh to lift immunity — bestowed by the Vienna Convention on Consular Relations — on its diplomatic premises, given the seriousness of the allegations leveled against Saudi Arabia.
“Under international law, both a forced disappearance and an extrajudicial killing are very serious crimes, and immunity should not be used to impede investigations into what happened and who is responsible,” Bachelet said in a statement released Tuesday.
In the United States, Attorney General Jeff Sessions left open the door to potential US involvement when asked about Khashoggi’s disappearance. He would offer no additional information and he would not comment on the credibility of the investigation.
“The matter is being given serious evaluation,” he said.
