BASSETERRE, St. Kitts (Thursday 27th January 2022) — Immediate past General Secretary of the St. Kitts-Nevis Trades and Labour Union (SKNT&LU) and well-known figure from the East Basseterre community, Batumba L.O. Tak, has passed away. Notably, he died on the 90th anniversary of the Labour movement in St. Kitts and Nevis — Tuesday 25th January 2022.

While occupying the post as General Secretary from 2003 to 2019, a top contribution by Tak during his time in office was sharing information, his opinion and other details via a weekly column called ‘TRADE UNION NEWS’ in the Labour Spokesman. Through his articles, he highlighted various areas related to the subject as he sought to educate and inform workers and readers in general. In July 2019, Tak underwent a medical procedure and lost one of his legs, which changed his normal way of life including his ability to carry out his duties at the Union’s office and in the field of work as General Secretary. In October 2019 at the SKNT&LU’s Annual Conference, the former Assistant General Secretary Precious Mills was voted General Secretary, making history as the first female to fill that position.

The management and staff of the Labour Spokesman Newspaper, as well as the Executive Committee of the St. Kitts-Nevis Trades and Labour Union, is saddened by the passing of comrade Batumba L.O. Tak, and offers condolences to his family, friends and others who mourn his death.
