BASSETERRE (Friday 15th January 2021) — Local vendors have been included on a new government inter-ministerial committee that will address issues surrounding street vending in Basseterre. PM Dr. Timothy Harris announced the committee at his press conference on Thursday 14th January, saying that “the overcrowding of our streets by illegitimate vending, the exposure of our differently abled and elderly to risks from improper placement of vending facilities, must now be controlled.” The committee includes representatives from the Building Board, Ministry of Sustainable Development, Police Force, Chamber of Commerce, and two vendors, among others. Harris noted that over 800 business licences were approved in 2020, a record high, compared to about 400 at the end of 2014.
