Police Investigating Las Lap Bar Incident Involving Government Minister And Officers

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts (Thursday 13th January 2022) — An altercation said to involve government minister Lindsay Grant and police officers at the Las Lap bar in Bird Rock is currently under police investigation. A video which appears to have surfaced on Monday 10th January 2022 shows a female officer on a phone call with her superior saying: “Ah here by Las Lap and because I am here and we speaking to Mr. Grant, he got all kinda tings goin on — the minister of government, I am not playing with him.”

In the shorter video which came out the night before, a male police officer is heard speaking to Grant saying: “People can’t be in an out without writing in the book,” advising about failure to comply with COVID-19 protocols. A voice which appears to be Grant responds: “Boss if you to shut it down, shut it down!” A voice later says: “Listen let me tell you something right, boy you ain’t want me wraat up aryou right now enuh!”

A police statement issued on Wednesday 12th January 2022 confirmed: “The High Command of The Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force (RSCNPF) has begun an investigation into the incident that occurred on January 08, 2022, at the Last Lap Bar in Bird Rock. The Police are in the process of gathering evidence, which includes, but is not limited to, conducting interviews, taking statements, and requesting reports. The RSCNPF is committed to the delivery of justice and we are assuring the public that a thorough investigation is being undertaken to bring this matter to a just resolution.”

Government Minister Jonel Powell also separately distanced himself from rumours that he was the individual heard in a separate video bashing police officers at the same location, stating categorically on Tuesday 11th January 2022 that “the voice heard in the video is NOT mine, nor was I, at anytime, in an altercation with the police.”
