To say whether or not democracy is alive and well in any society is at the interpretation level or perceived explanation of whomever, (government or people) experience, reality, observation and anticipation – unless he or she pulls out the dictionary’s definition by Oxford’s term which says such is “A political system that allows the citizens to participate in political decision-making, or to elect representatives to government bodies.” And freedom of speech- “Liberty to express opinions and ideas without hindrance, and especially without fear of punishment.” Described to be a lifeblood of democracy and freedom of speech stars the show. In any democratic society, citizens and residents often comfortably boast and revel in the environment of one’s right that comes with expressing one’s opinions and ideas that offer a different or even controversial side which might not be a popular public point of view.
Here in St. Kitts and Nevis, a current hot topic is that of those public figures who are particularly known in the political spheres as influential and powerful. Some people even dare say it is better for whichever government of the day not to get these individuals outrageously concerned about governance because they are the definition of whistleblowers who could influence the opinion of voters.
Such individuals are often praised for their knowledgeable and literate ways which complement the platforms thus feeding into the supportive attentiveness of their audiences. In this day and age, social media gives a different meaning to information sharing, and so capturing the attention of one’s audience is as quick and easy as hitting ‘live’ recording while in the heat of the moment or delivering a properly planned presentation so as to give structure to one’s views.
Written pieces are right there alongside the outlets for sharing, venting and ranting per topic(s). And according to who responds in whatever way to whatever allegations or questions, some people perceive such to be attempts to stifle democracy or muzzle the messenger while others would say the appropriate response is to give attention in shutting down the propaganda and misinformation.
The public spotlight placed on influencers, including those in our Federation, is focused on their usual stance to say what is on their minds, including asking the type of tough questions when everyone else seems to be shying away. Although, freedom of speech is highly appreciated by those of us who like to either partake or simply observe from quiet corners, it is safe to say that there are terms and conditions that apply to freedom of speech that must be consciously weighed with a sense of responsibility.
Hence, while freedom of speech is a fundamental right-defamation, inciting violence, slander and other related aspects should not be justified or encouraged by way of communicating to wide and impressionable audiences and or supporters. Democracy and freedom of speech goes hand in hand but it appears to be some type of balancing act.
