Our Independence Day 40th anniversary is fast approaching [19th September], and quite frankly there is no doubt that many people cannot wait for it just because they want to feel that customary dose of love and togetherness in the country. It would be quite refreshing I hope to quench the heaviness of political divisiveness that seems to be an ongoing traditional topic or feeling.
It is hoped that the occasion is as refreshing as a cool breeze on these very hot summer days. Independence celebration puts the country on a pedestal that say no matter our differences, we are closely knitted by the fabrics of the love for country and overall goodwill to or fellow citizens and residents.
Party politics here in St. Kitts-Nevis is so interesting, and even the topic of Independence brings political discussions of various angles but the commonness of togetherness as a people remains intact. As a people, we should not allow our differences to divide us on a national scale.
And this is a very serious statement. Everybody is entitled to their own opinion, and we really should not be upset about others who hold a difference of opinion. This past week, the radio airwaves and social media traffic has been quite busy because everyone has something to say about the current and ongoing party politics affairs of St.
Kitts and Nevis. People-both friends and strangerscontinue to go
back and forth arguing our points just to score political points at times with some high intensity during some exchanges. It is quite disheartening to see though that love for country for some people is only put on display-most of the timewhen their political party of choice is at the helm of government.
That really should not be but then again that is their freedom to do so. Construction criticism and dialogues for positive discourse is the recipe that is key to building each other up and not tearing each other down at the altar of politics.
Politics is a part of our lives and so we cannot escape the constant dialogue but the constant keyboard warrior, radio call-in, verbal fight type of behavior is a bit bothersome. ‘Lawd everything in dis country is bout politics’ is the type of response to how earstired some people are. But at the same time it must be said that those who are elected to office by the people must respect that ‘Country Above Self’ motto in service to our nation and people with integrity, transparency and accountability.
Independence Day observation is coming up and automatically many of us will choose to show off patriotism through fashion or other creative elements/expressions including make-up, spoken or written words or an intentional playlist of nationalistic tunes. Well, whatever your choice, one thing is for sure, and that it an occasion that beckons patriotic pride surely captures the essence of far we have come as a people which can be a sentimental breather of reflections and gratitude in giving a push for the betterment of our people for generations to come.
