The head of the Tokyo Olympics organising committee, Yoshiro Mori, 83, was set to resign after criticism for saying women talk too much and that meetings with many female board directors “take a lot of time.” The remarks set off a firestorm of protest from sponsors, athletes, and the public. Toyota president Akio Toyoda said the company was “disappointed” at the remarks. Almost 400 people withdrew applications to volunteer at the Olympic Games. A group of female lawmakers wore white in protest, with some men joining in solidarity. Mori had initially apologised but said he would not resign, before the mounting pressure became overwhelming.
