For some of us St. Kitts-Nevis Labour Party supporters, the firing squad is taking too long. We want blood. We want revenge. We want all those who made our lives a living hell for the past seven years to feel the might of our hands.
And as far as we are concerned, these people should have been sent home in the first week. Common sense should force us to question why some people who wreaked havoc on our beloved federation are still working. I cannot tell my comrades to refrain from calling for the dismissal of certain Unity terrorists.
But if these people are on contracts that will end by year end or in the first quarter of next year, why do we want our government to fire them and risk all sorts of court battles which we will lose, when we can simply wait for their contracts to expire naturally? Perhaps it is that the foot soldiers don’t know.
They don’t have the information. So perhaps the ministers need to ensure that key people in the constituencies are always in the loop so that rumblings and grumblings and mumblings are dealt with expeditiously. For some comrades who have been waiting for seven years for something to happen for them, three months more seem like an eternity.
That is why ministers need to be in constant communication with their constituents. Let them know what is happening. Let them know that something is being worked out for them. And if what is being requested of the politician is illegal or impossible, let them know that too.
Comrades and friends, we cannot have condemned the atrocities of Unity, but now that we are in government, we want to do the same thing. I don’t care how many votes are in the house. The SKNLP ministers must not get involved in anything that we campaigned against because it is wrong but now hypocritically and conveniently want to call wrong right.
That is one of the main criticisms that Unity faced daily. Credibility is critical. Once a politician is no longer credible, it’s all downhill after that. While I do not wish to spend too much time on the former ministers, it is worth reflecting on how many times their credibility was called into question.
Up to now the federation doesn’t know if Venezuela gave us US$16,000,000.00 or EC$16,000,000.00. Up to now we don’t know what happened to the US$800,000.00 that were appropriated and sent somewhere to buy COVID-19 vaccines.
Up to now we don’t know how it is possible that a quarter milliondollar hut was being built by a minister’s righthand man and he claimed that he knew nothing about it. There is the shoes and watch scandal. The Police Credit Union scandal.
The MRI scandal. The Stem Cell scandal. The herpes scandal. The Hushpuppi scandal. All these and more challenged the credibility of the Unity government ministers. Our SKNLP candidates must remain honest. They must be sincere.
They must always try to be the same people they were when they were begging the electorate for their support because before we know it, 2027 will be upon us. I know that because we are all human, mistakes will be made. Scandals, however, are not mistakes.
The people voted overwhelmingly to reject Unity. Not in recent times have all successful candidates won every single box in every single polling station. I am not sure that such a feat can be repeated. I am however convinced that the SKNLP can rule for more than two terms The government knows that job creation is critical.
And job creation by the government does not mean working for government. The government must provide the environment to enable job creation. Entrepreneurship must be aggressively encouraged. Start up capital must be easily accessible.
And while no one can predict which businesses will succeed or fail, I do not believe that everyone should go into the car rental business, for example. This small enterprise department must also aggressively monitor all beneficiaries of any loan/ grant to ensure that the owners are doing their best to succeed.
The aim is for these new business owners to be able to live comfortably from their businesses. In addition, existing small businesses should have the same easy access to any loan/ grant being provided by the government. We have a lot of people with ideas who just want an opportunity.
If the Dr Terrance Drewled SKNLP government can help people to turn their dreams into viable realities, we would be the party of real change and progress that we have always envisaged for the federation. * get all kinda wud. Dey say dat when he was dere he use to fly through wid he window dem up.
