ABUJA, Nigeria (Thursday 26th March 2026) — Prime Minister Dr. Terrance Drew recently spotlighted St. Kitts-Nevis having co-sponsored a United Nations (UN) resolution recognizing the transatlantic slave trade as the worst crime ever committed against humanity as a move which forms part of a broader agenda to strengthen Afri-Caribbean ties and coordinated political advocacy.
He shared such sentiments during his keynote address on Wednesday 25th March 2026, at the second annual ACL’s Afri-Caribbean Investment Summit (AACIS), held at the Bola Ahmed Tinubu International Conference Centre in Abuja, Nigeria, under the theme “One Voice, One Vision: Advancing Afri-Caribbean Unity.” The summit, running from 23rd to 28th March, is powered by Aquarian Consult in partnership with the Government of St. Kitts and Nevis.
“Today I want to highlight, to recognize His Excellency the Prime Minister, or the President of Ghana John Mahama. He’s presenting today; tabling before the United Nations, this very day, in about a few hours. A resolution recognizing the transatlantic slave trade as the worst crime ever committed by humanity. St. Kitts and Nevis is a co-sponsor of that resolution, and I am waiting patiently and anxiously to hear that the resolution would have passed in the halls of the United Nations, and so in a real sense the struggle continues,” PM Drew said ahead of the passing of the resolution at the UN Assembly on 26th March, International Day of Remembrance of Victims of Slavery and Transatlantic Slave Trade.
The UN resolution was passed on 26th March, marking an international acknowledgment of the transatlantic slave trade and reinforcing the Caribbean’s strategic and moral role in global affairs.
Highlighting Afri-Caribbean solidarity, he said: “President of Ghana, Prime Minister of St. Kitts and Nevis, Prime Minister of Barbados, we have co-sponsored a resolution and it will be tabled before the United Nations. That is what we call coordinated political advocacy,” PM Drew said, linking the resolution to the broader agenda of economic and cultural collaboration.
PM Drew also linked unity and prosperity to tangible benefits for African and Caribbean peoples saying: “If prosperity is real, it must be felt in the daily lives of our African people and our Caribbean people. It must be reflected in trade, movement between regions, and shared development. Even as we pursue justice, we must act,” he said.
He elaborated on the strategic dimension between the African and Caribbean regions.
“Unity is not symbolism. Unity is strategy. Prosperity is not merely growth. It is dignity, access, opportunity, and security for all our people on both sides of the Atlantic. Those who use unity for expediency will soon find that if it is not built on strong principles, it will wither,” PM Drew stated.
The Prime Minister also spoke about St. Kitts and Nevis’ ongoing priorities, including renewable energy, food security, and sustainable development, while emphasizing the moral imperative of active engagement with Africa.
“This understanding is deeply rooted in Pan-African thought and echoed across both Africa and the Caribbean. Unity is the foundation of power. Prosperity is inseparable from dignity and opportunity. The resolution is a step in advancing these principles,” he added.
