Overcoming Our National Angst

Editorial — Happy Independence 38

Yesterday, Thursday 16th September, was National Heroes Day. Sunday 19th September will be the thirty-eighth anniversary of independence. It should be the case that, as a nation, there would be real feelings of joy, and, as a people, we should take great pride in achieving this milestone. Regrettably that is not the case, as the vast majority of our people are feeling the pains of having to live under a regime that is singularly lacking in moral and political authority, in addition to being so vindictive and utterly corrupt, that most experience great difficulties in trying to wrap their minds around it all.

As is to be expected, the regime’s adherents and sycophants will try their best to blame our dispirited feelings on COVID-19, but while the pandemic has added to those feelings, it is not the source of the national gloom. Under genuine, people-loving leadership, our nation would have handled that health hazard with great confidence. The refusal by SCHEME UNITY and their agents to accept the hard facts will ensure their failure, and speed the deepening of their anxiety. Not even the colourful street lights and their puerile scheme of ‘wear this colour today and that one tomorrow’ will help their cause. Our people’s depression cannot be lifted by such trivialities. Our country and our people are desperately in need of sound developmental programmes, economic and otherwise. Endless chatter, lofty sounding tongue-twisting speeches, and politically orchestrated ‘meetings’ will not do it.

We of this newspaper call upon our people to keep strong hearts. As difficult as it will be, Labour will once again craft and implement the programmes that will put us firmly on the road of progress. We are depending on our leaders, and they will deliver as they always do. We also need to continue encouraging our people to come back home to Labour. Many are still wary of taking that step. Let them know that we are still an organisation of persons who love and care for all, that our arms and our doors are always open to them, and that they need fear nothing. It is the only way in which we will be able to lift ourselves out of this national angst. We wish everyone the very best for the celebration of our independence — but please, do continue to be careful of COVID-19. HAPPY INDEPENDENCE 38.
