In September 1983, at a point in time when our beloved little country was about to be high-jacked into ‘independence’, former governor, the late Sir Probyn Inniss, published a book titled “Wither Bound St Kitts and Nevis?” Therein he raised a number of questions related to where we as a country were really heading, what were our historical, social and economic experiences, and just how were they factored into what we wanted for ourselves and our people of the future. Even a cursory reading of that text and reflection will show that most of our people appear to have learned little or nothing where such matters are concerned.
Which is most worrying, for such matters have consequences which are long-lasting and the effects of which are irreversible. After all of the song and dance it turned out to have been nothing more for the vast majority of our people, but for a few it was a successful ruse to escape the long arm of the law, at least for a while.
We should all pay most careful attention to such matters. Sadly, ever so sadly, there are in our midst a number of persons who have no real grounding, politically or otherwise, but who allow themselves to be taken whichever way the wind appears to be blowing at any moment in time.
When it suited them they were fully in SCHEME UNITY’s corner, sounding the trumpets of evil, and shouting for all that they were worth, all while drowning out the voices of reason and goodwill. We of this newspaper caution our people against allowing themselves to be taken in by such political sycophants.
We call on everyone to think carefully about the future, and, even as we do so, to try and regain some of the morality which once guided out nation. As we approach the next crossroad of national decision making, let us pledge ourselves to THINK!But, first and foremost, we need to regain the moral high ground.
