NEVIS RECYCLING PROJECT ENTERS SECOND PHASE WITH BIN PLACEMENT PROGRAMME
CHARLESTOWN, NEVIS, September 12, 2022 (MMS-SKN) — The three-year St. Kitts and Nevis Solid Waste Management and Recycling Project, funded by the Taiwan ICDF and operational since July 29, 2021, is gearing to enter its second phase, the Bin Placement Programme, beginning with hoteliers and restaurateurs on Nevis. The project has invested in machines including two compression balers, one breaker, one forklift and one truck. After recyclables are baled, they will be exported overseas for processing. Collection points exist on four alternating Nevis locations every second and fourth Friday of the month. In the second phase, bins will be placed at schools, hotels, restaurants, community centres, churches and local retail businesses. Recyclables currently accepted include plastic bottles, metal cans and aluminium drinking cans — items must be clean, in good condition and separated from general waste.
ILO REPORT: 50 MILLION PEOPLE WORLDWIDE IN MODERN SLAVERY — September 12, 2022
GENEVA (ILO News) — Fifty million people were living in modern slavery in 2021, according to the latest Global Estimates of Modern Slavery — 10 million more than in 2016. Of these, 28 million are in forced labour and 22 million are trapped in forced marriage. Women and children remain disproportionately vulnerable. More than half (52%) of all forced labour and a quarter of all forced marriages can be found in upper-middle or high-income countries. Migrant workers are more than three times more likely to be in forced labour than non-migrant adult workers. The Arab States have the highest prevalence of forced marriage, with 4.8 people out of every 1,000 in the region in forced marriage. “It is shocking that the situation of modern slavery is not improving. Nothing can justify the persistence of this fundamental abuse of human rights,” said ILO Director-General Guy Ryder. Recommended actions include improving and enforcing laws and labour inspections, stronger measures to combat trafficking in business and supply chains, and raising the legal age of marriage to 18 without exception.
