BASSETERRE (Friday 8th January 2021) — Chief Medical Officer Dr. Hazel Laws is calling on everyone in St. Kitts-Nevis to consistently carry out all COVID-19 prevention measures due to new, more transmissible variants found in the UK, South Africa and Nigeria. The new UK variant is 56-70% more transmissible than the previous version, causing England to enter its third national lockdown. “It takes only one undetected imported case to lead to community spread,” said Dr. Cameron Wilkinson. Four cases of the new variant have already been found in Jamaica, and “the risk of it reaching here is very high.” British Airways flights from the UK are temporarily suspended from 1-16 January. The Federation has recorded 33 total cases with two active cases.
