People are looking for Timothy. A lot of us haven’t seen him in the flesh since he lost the elections. We want to see this man who had terrorized Labour people for seven years. We want to see him now that he can’t do us anything anymore. That is why people are saying the place feels light — like a burden has been lifted off the country. The high blood pressure rate went up. The heart attack rate went up. The stroke rate went up. The death rate went up under Unity. That is why Dr Simmonds had to bawl out. He had to take off his National Heroes hat and put on his PAM hat and try to right a wrong that he had supported.

While any student of politics will insist that the only reason for the existence of a political party is to be in government, sometimes we have to decide if making a deal with the devil to get power is worth it. And that is what happened to PAM, who had been in the political wilderness for twenty years. Some strong PAM supporters are convinced that if Unity hadn’t “imploded” when it did, PAM would have disappeared from off the political scene entirely. And the SKNLP needs to take note. My Labour ministers should not take their eyes off Timothy and the rest of PLP either. That is why we’re not seeing Timothy — maybe he’s spending his time plotting and scheming. While I do a lot of guessing and speculating, I know that he didn’t plan to spend only seven years as prime minister. He had planned to spend at the very least fifteen years.

In this month of September, when we celebrate our independence, we have so much to be thankful for. We must also be patient. A month has not gone as yet since we won the elections. Whatever happened, I am sure of one thing: God was instrumental in Labour’s triumphant return to government, and we must never forget that. Instead, we ought to do as the winning Independence slogan suggests and Refocus, Re-create and Redesign for Independence 39 and beyond.
