BASSETERRE, St. Kitts (Friday 21st May 2021) — Medical Chief of Staff at the JNF General Hospital Dr. Cameron Wilkinson said the announcement of COVID Case 46 should serve as a wakeup call for all unvaccinated individuals. Speaking at the NEOC briefing on Wednesday 19th May, Dr. Wilkinson cited the current vaccination statistics: 14,747 persons had received their first dose (44.6% of the target population) and 4,572 were fully vaccinated (13.8%). He noted the figure “could have and should have been higher.”
Dr. Wilkinson outlined the vaccine’s effectiveness: 70% effective in preventing COVID-19; 76% effective in preventing severe disease and hospitalisation after a single dose; 82.4% effective after two doses; and 100% effective in preventing death from COVID-19. “This positive case should serve as a wakeup call for those who were hesitating, for those who knowingly spread fake news and false information about the vaccines, and for those who silently took the vaccine and chose not to share the information with others,” he said. “We have said no one is safe unless everyone is safe.”
