BASSETERRE, St. Kitts (Monday 29th November 2021) — Dr. Terrance Drew, the newly elected National Leader of the St. Kitts-Nevis Labour Party (SKNLP), says the party is on a course to regain leadership of the country in forming the government at the next general elections. “Presently, the idea is to ensure that we bring our party together and start the building process of making sure that we are on the course to regain leadership in this country so we can work on behalf of the people. So immediately, it’s to bring our people together and then we start to build at the national level and from constituency to constituency and therefore we are ready to go,” he said.

He made the disclosure during an interview with this media house following the opposition party’s electoral conference held on Sunday 28th November 2021 at the St. Kitts Marriott Resort in Frigate Bay. Votes amassed saw Dr. Drew receive 184, Maynard 153, and Dr. Hanley 70 of the 412 votes cast (five were rejected). Deputy National Leader nominee lawyer Marsha Henderson had withdrawn from the race. Notably, for the first time the SKNLP used secret ballot voting to conduct its electoral conference, a change from the show of hands.

Dr. Drew said of the new voting process: “I think that the party is a mature party and the party is advancing and progressing, and this is the next step in its progress and advancement. This is an open process, it’s a democratic process and that would strengthen the party as its base.”

When asked to elaborate on his widely-used hashtag #LabourStrong, Dr. Drew replied: “I will continue to push that hashtag because our party is still the strongest party in this Federation. We are the largest party, the longest serving party and most successful party. So we are strong and we will continue to grow as we work on behalf of the people.” The SKNLP will celebrate its 90th anniversary in January 2022.

The other members of the newly-installed SKNLP executive committee include: National Chairperson Dr. Asim Martin, Vice Chairpersons Diana Williams, Thamesha Fyfield and Dr. Jenson Morton, Assistant Secretary Nadine Natta, and Floor Members Hollis Prentice, Kashema Gumbs and Diane Greene. The National Secretary and Treasurer will be appointed by the National Party Leader.
