BASSETERRE, St. Kitts (Thursday 10th June 2021) — Chief Medical Officer Dr. Hazel Laws identified two key factors driving the current COVID-19 outbreak: workplaces not adhering to prevention and control measures, and the vaccination rate remaining below the herd immunity threshold. Speaking on ‘Leadership Matters’ on ZIZ on Tuesday 8th June, Dr. Laws reported that within the previous 24 hours St. Kitts-Nevis recorded 25 additional cases, bringing total confirmed cases to 119 — 105 in St. Kitts and 14 in Nevis — with 53 recoveries, four current hospitalisations, and no COVID-related deaths.
“What we found is that a number of employees are showing up and coming to work while experiencing flu-like and COVID-like symptoms. Private and public entities and individuals are not adhering to the COVID-19 prevention measures — mask wearing, hand sanitisation and evaluating employees upon arrival at work,” the CMO said. One case has been identified as a super-spreader responsible for transmitting the virus to nine contacts. Approximately seven entities in the gaming sector have been impacted. Positivity rate stands at approximately 1.6%. Vaccination coverage: 63.4% of the target population have received the first dose; 27.1% are fully vaccinated.
