All day, every day, one is constrained to wonder if this beautiful little country of ours will ever escape the most horrible and troubling scandals to which the SCHEME UNITY lot have subjected us. Recently our new prime minister and minster for finance apprised the country of the parlous state in which the last administration left our finances, and the rather dismal state of the economy.
Hard on the heels of that came word that a very ‘patchy’ entity, supposedly owned and operated by a very ‘patchy’ fellow, had somehow or other contrived to withdraw a huge amount of money, tens of millions of dollars, from the treasury just before the last general elections. The withdraw was supposedly related to a new Basseterre High School, but nothing, absolutely NOTHING whatsoever, has been done in that regard.
And that is only one instance of such corruption. Then, like a bombshell, the ‘Hushpuppi’ matter hit the airwaves yet again. That matter has now reached a point which has placed us, yet again, under the microscope of international attention.
Alas, there is escaping that matter. As our authorities seek to cooperate with those of other nations a truly alarming and sinister fact has come to light. Some time ago, while the former regime was in office, parliament was informed that a request for information had been received from a foreign government.
Parliament was informed that the matter had been forwarded to the Attorney General’s Office for advice. Now that there has been a change of administration the nation is learning that there never was any such submission to the AG’s office.
It would seem as though parliament was lied to, and lying to parliament is a very, very serious matter. We of this newspaper urge the incumbent administration to examine this matter thoroughly, and the findings brought to the light.
If parliament was indeed lied to, there has to be very serious consequences for those who were involved. By their misdeeds shall we truly know them!
