PIERS. FAIRS AND FAMALLAYYY

By:
FAIR SHARE FOR ALL

The traffic lights were to create a sustained buzz to ensure, among other things, a small turn out for the march on Labour Day.

Since the lights are not doing the job and the march was such a success that the operatives are suggesting that the pictures were photo shopped, a job fair for the second pier is coming soon this Saturday.

I would suggest to all who are unemployed and underemployed to go to the job fair. In this guava crop, a job is a job. I hope that all the unemployed Labour supporters, all those PEP workers who, instead of being made permanent and instead of getting a liveable wage of five hundred dollars a week, should be the first in line at the job fair.

This second pier is more than three years late. All Timothy and his gang had to do was to take the baton and run.

Instead, to ensure kickbacks every step of the way and to make sure that cement companies and trucking and heavy equipment companies were in place, all sorts of pussy footing took place and the project was deliberately delayed.

Stalled for more than three whole years.

Now that they are running out of time and the electorate has long grown fed up of them, Team Unity is trying to do something in a desperate effort to impress the voters.

For three whole years, all Team Unity did was to set up themselves and their famalaayys. That was their only focus.

All sorts of questionable and unethical activities took up their time as they ensured that at the end of one term, they were set for life.

Every service that the government needed became a business for a member of cabinet. All goods that the government purchased on a regular basis became a business for a member of government.

Now I understand why Team Unity is boasting that five hundred new businesses were open under their watch. It is Team Unity and their famalaayy who have established the better part of these businesses.

So this job fair is intended to take some steam out of Labour’s successful weekend and to create some renewed interest in Team Unity,
I believe that Tim and his gang foolishly thought that the march would have been a failure. I do not know what unit of measure they were using to come to such a conclusion but they were way off.

So after the Ms Labour Queen Show on Saturday, after Sunday’s meeting when Labour’s new candidate “tun up de place”, and after the massive turn out to the march, ask Terry if any reader doubts me, the government had to do something.
And fast.

By now, Timothy thought the marches would have been reduced to a sprinkling of people. By now, he thought that people would have been so afraid of them that only the very brave would have dared to venture anywhere near the Labour Day march.

But it is God who shares bread. Not Team Unity.

And that is the message that was sent to and received by Team Unity.

People who a year ago would have stood on the side in a dark pink or a neutral colour were in the march in their red.

People who had been traditionally with us but had parted ways with us last elections were in the march.

Because they recognise that Timothy and his gang have to be stopped.
They are not good for the country.

They are not good for people. Just ask Sam, Gene, Clecton, Terry, Brand, Samal, Wattley.
Oh dear. I can go on and on.

Let us make sure that they do not get another opportunity at governing.

One way to ensure that is to welcome home all who want to come back.

There is room for all in the St. Kitts-Nevis Labour Party.

Occupational Safety and Health

By: Joseph Jones

I welcome the acknowledgement of the St.Kitts-Nevis government to embark on the improvement of the occupational Safety and Health systems.

This is a topic which the St.Kitts-Nevis Trades and Labour Union plays a very important role in considering the conditions of their members (workers) at the workplaces. The aim is to prevent occupational accidents.

Workers, it is therefore essential to live with the right perspective (view) of having ‘The Awareness’. It is a fact that death follows life and thereafter comes judgment.

Workers are you listening to me? Because I am sure you are not hurry to leave this life. As the body is breaking down under stress with the weight of the years, will have to find a way to manage it. That is why I take time to write these articles; as I said before wisdom is calling out. It is not discernment raising its voice but on the heights along the road, it takes its position at the crossroads and take this seriously. At the entrances of the doorways it keeps crying out loudly.

Hello! Workers, can you hear it? Before I close, let me deal with “Noise”. Once again because you (the workers) are not listening and you are not reading. The level of ‘noise” has increased both at the workplaces eg. The airport. At work this is due to increased automation. Machinery has been made more efficient and work faster and so come the increasing noise level.

In a large open work premises is distributed unhindered and can in some cases even increase in intensity. Once you cannot hear, you area handicap. Therefore hearing is an important sense which helps us to establish contact with our surroundings.

If we lose our hearing or have it reduced, we will find if difficult to hear what your workmates are saying and difficult to listen to your radio or television. Workers, I hereby encourage you study the effects that reduced hearing or deafness. See some of the following consequences below:
(1) You find it difficult to understand normal speech and are disturbed by machinery or traffic.
(2) You find it difficult to understand what the supervisors are saying or make our sound signals
(3) You suffer from a feeling of isolation due to not being able to participate in discussion during work and also while having conversation with friends during time off
(4) You need more rest and relaxation than normal because workers (people) suffering from reduced hearing/deafness must often use all their energy to do their jobs.

****NOTE WELL****
No doctor can repair defenses so therefore it is important that you who spend plenty time in noisy environments be allowed to rest your ears by taking a break in quiet surroundings.

Until next week.

Thank you.

Antigua Minister Out of Cabinet Again Amid Bribery Scandal

ST JOHN’S, Antigua, Wednesday May 16, 2o18 – Antigua and Barbuda’s Trade and Investment Minister Asot Michael has resigned from the Cabinet amid allegations that he is linked to a British investor accused of bribery.

Michael yesterday submitted his resignation letter, which takes effect tomorrow, to Prime Minister Gaston Browne, who accepted it and asked Governor General Sir Rodney Williams to revoke his appointment. The move comes on the heels of the opposition United Progressive Party’s (UPP) political leader Harold Lovell calling for him to either step down or be fired.

Although insisting that he had done nothing wrong, Michael said he would resign “to allow the government to fulfil its obligations to the people, without any distraction”.

A court in the United Kingdom last week heard transcripts of 2016 conversations between British billionaire Peter Virdee and his business partner Dieter Trutschler, in which Virdee talked about being asked for bribes.

In the recordings, made by German authorities, the investor said Michael had asked him for a car for his mother, $2 million, and a watch.

The media reports on the court revelations prompted Lovell to demand the removal of Michael who had been fired as minister of tourism, economic development, investment and energy last October, after he was arrested in London, but returned to the Cabinet after the March 21 elections in which he won his seat.

Lovell contended that the latest controversy “once again drags the name of Antigua and Barbuda into the mud”.

“It is absolutely important that Mr Michael should do the right thing and he should resign immediately. Failing an immediate resignation Prime Minister Gaston Browne ought to relive him immediately of his responsibilities,” he said.

But even as he stepped down, Michael insisted that he was “not a party to the court proceedings in the United Kingdom which have been reported in the media, nor have I been charged with any wrongdoing. The media reports refer to recordings of conversations between persons other than myself, and I cannot be held responsible for their utterances”.

He charged that the allegations were being used by “opposition political elements” to seek to discredit him and the Government.

And Michael’ said he would do all in his power to counter and disprove allegations made against him.

“I am determined that the calumnies against me shall not stand,” he wrote in his resignation letter.

Michael is not the only Caribbean politician under the microscope as a result of the revelations in the British court.

St Kitts and Nevis’ Prime Minister Dr Timothy Harris is facing calls from the opposition party to step down as well, since his name was also mentioned.

Together We Shall Prevail

Ever since the seventeenth (17th) of February 2016 our beloved St. Kitts and Nevis has been suffering from a multiplicity of political and governmental ailments which have been causing us to slide further and further down the scales of assessment as they relate to our economic growth, business development, the education of our children, the health and the general wellness of our people, our ability to feed ourselves, public safety, and general confidence in ourselves and our abilities, to name only some.

From that time our country has been suffering from a very serious leadership deficit. This has led to what is known as ‘Political Paralysis’, a state of affairs which always causes political drift and general instability.

Had it not been for the political maturity and statesmanship of our Comrade Party Leader and his team of other leaders in our party, coupled with that of the political leader of The Nevis Reformation Party and his team, our country would most certainly have descended into full blown chaos.

The only things which are on the increase are the practices of nepotism, ‘family affairs’, bobol, the general corruption of civil servants and persons in the private sector, abuse of public funds, victimisation, and the naked attacks on freedom of speech in general and some sections of the press in particular, not to mention the increasing incompetence in the general administration of the nation’s affairs and the departments (ministries) of the state, in short an increase in the levels of maladministration.

In addition to all of that is the suffering of so many of our people who allowed themselves to be taken in by the loose, empty, meaningless, deceptive talk of the so-called Team Unity (now accurately re-branded as SCHEME UNITY), at the time not realising that it was nothing but crates of baloney, designed and pedaled to turn them against those who have always worked both for them and in their best interests, as well as those of the nation as a whole.

Now, much saddened, but also much wiser, our people have shown that we are ready to remove those now in office, all of whom have betrayed our (the people’s) sacred trust.
The kindest thing which can be said of all those who continue to claim otherwise is that they are being delusional, especially after Monday’s Labour Day march.

Oh, what a day it was! The people of St. Kitts and Nevis responded to the calls and arrangements of our comrade leaders. This year witnessed some innovative changes to the traditional programme of events, and our people showed their appreciation in a very pronounced way.

In previous years, our observation of Labour Day started with the visits to the grave sites of our fallen comrades, paying respect to their memories, and as an expression of our abiding appreciation of, and gratitude for, the services which they gave to our nation and our movement.

As from this year that tribute is now being paid on the Sunday afternoon before Labour Day. This is to allow for the earlier commencement of activities on the actual day. Everyone, without exception, was very pleased with the start of activities at 6.30am, beginning with a breakfast being made available.

On the Sunday night, a public meeting was held at George Street, Newtown, and what a meeting it was. Every speaker was well received and listened to most attentively. As he wrapped up the proceedings our Comrade Leader was not just as great as he always is, but on this occasion it can well be said that he excelled himself.

With that meeting being held in what is virtually the heart of Constituency 1, the comrades, friends and supporters of Labour were all fully appreciative of the efforts which were made, and responded with fiery enthusiasm.

The incumbent (mis)representative is quite visibly shaken to the core. But he is not alone. The entire SCHEME UNITY lot now know, for an absolute certainty, that their time ‘in office’ is fast drawing to an end.

As the marchers wended their way through the streets of Basseterre on Monday both participants and onlookers were very obviously pleased with the turnout, and all showed a determination to set right the very sad state of our country’s affairs.

We of this newspaper thank all those who responded to the calls of the leaders of our movement to turn out in large numbers on Monday, and to send a message, loudly and clearly, to the government that their days in power are numbered.

Your response to the calls was encouraging and most heartwarming. You demonstrated, for all to see, that we still have an unshakeable solidarity as a union and as a party, the two arms of our great organisation, The St. Kitts and Nevis Labour Party.

The nature of the participation in the march also demonstrated that we are a movement of inclusion, that all are welcome to be with us, and that we, as a movement, while predominantly made up of the middle and working classes, are fully appreciative of the contributions of the upper classes and the wealthy, and are prepared to work collaboratively for the fullest possible development of our nation, indeed as we always have throughout the length of our movement’s long history.

As we have pointed out on a number of occasions, we are at a very critical juncture in our nation’s history. One of the numerous and worrying matters with which we MUST contend is SCHEME UNITY’s brazen attempt to remove our members and supporters from the Voters’ Lists.

By your showing on Monday, dear people of St. Kitts and Nevis, you sent a strong, loud and clear message to the SCHEME UNITY government that we are not the kind of people who will lie down and allow them to get away with their evil intentions.

Your turnout on Monday will have engendered in them heightened feelings of desperation, and will have made them more determined to get our people off the lists. But your turnout will also have made them more conflicted, for they MUST now know and understand that ANY shenanigans on their part will incur the full wrath of the people.
The dilemma which they now face is of their own making.

In the face of the most grievous deterioration of democracy in our nation the people on Monday sent to those now in office, loudly and clearly, the message that we fully intend to ‘take back the people’s parliament and restore it to their full representative and deliberative service’.

On Monday you also helped to send the clear message that we are ALL completely fed up with UNITIM and the SCHEME UNITY lot them, that we want a completely free press returned to us, that we wish to once again fully enjoy our, in full, the freedom of expression to which we have long been accustomed in this country.

We of this newspaper, the officers and members of The St. Kitts and Nevis Trades and Labour Union, and the leaders, comrades, friends and supporters of The St Kitts and Nevis Labour Party, say a very big THANK YOU, the people of St. Kitts and Nevis for responding so positively, and in such huge numbers, on Labour Day 2018.

Together we SHALL prevail.

How In The Name Of High Heavens, Can The People’s Labour Party (PLP) Be The Real Labour?

By Earle Clarke, 01/05/2018

“Where Justice is denied, where Poverty is enforced, where Ignorance prevails, and where one class is made to feel that society is an organized conspiracy to rob, oppress, and degrade, then, neither person nor property will be safe!” Federick Douglas
Dear reader, I beg the question, How could Doctor Timothy Harris proclaim to the inhabitants of the Federation, the Regional Brothers and Sisters and the International Community, that his People’s Labour Party (PLP) which was born out of Treachery, Deception and Bribery in 2014, be the real Labour Party in the Federation, eclipsing the St.Kitts – Nevis Labour Party which has been in existence since 1932 – 2018 (86 years ago)? We are fully aware that he is an Accountant by profession and can juggle figures, but he only possesses the book sense while we are fortified with the street and survival sense? How then, does he expect to mama guy us with this false proclamation of his? If his is the real Labour Party how come he was not gearing up for the Labour Day Weekend Celebrations? How come we did not hear any advertisement coming from his PLP to march with the workers on LABOUR DAY, for LABOUR DAY is a DAY SPECIFICALLY set aside to RECOGNIZE the VAST CONTRIBUTIONS made by the WORKERS of the WORLD to the DEVELOPMENT of their COUNTRY? How come he was not laying any wreaths on the graves of the fallen Comrades?

How come we have not heard any announcements coming from the headquarters of the PLP and from Dr. Harris its leader recognizing the CONTRIBUTIONS made by the workers of St. Kitts – Nevis? How come we have not heard any statements emanating from Dr. Harris about marching through the streets in SOLIDARITY with the workers of the country and the world over? How come warnings have been issued that, if any Civil Servants are seen marching on that Day, disciplinary measures will be taken against them; but, aren’t Civil Servants in and of themselves, workers? In 1981 I worked at Social Security as an Inspector and I went to march on Labour Day. On my return to work Tuesday morning, Rubie Taylor of Newton Ground and I were immediately called up to Mr. Manning the Director’s Office where we were told that we are working for the Government and we marched against it yesterday! I acted as the spokesman and politely asked Mr. Manning if he watched the world news yesterday? He asked what has that got to do with the allegation?

I told him, “Sir, if you did, you would have seen millions of workers from all walks of life, marching in solidarity with other workers all over the world, for it is a special DAY set aside for workers all over the world. It is not just a St. Kitts thing. It is International and we as workers marched in solidarity with our brother and sister workers to show support for them. Mr. Manning could do nothing but to say, Mr. Clarke and Miss Taylor go to your Department. If the PLP was a bona – fide Labour Party, would it have issued such a threatening warning to its workers, for the word LABOUR, refers to the WORKING CLASS! The People’s Labour Party, the People’s Action Movement (PAM), the Concerned Citizen’s Movement (CCM) are all right wing anti-Black and anti-working class political parties, which are associated with and affiliated to the Donald Trump Republican and the Theresa May’s Conservative Parties. I challenge them to deny this. Leaders of the CCM, PLP, and PAM, is my statement TRUE or FALSE? If it is false, condemn me with HISTORICAL FACTS!!
Dear reader, every time there is a General Election in St. Kitts – Nevis, representatives from the Donald Trump’s Republican Party of the USA come to St. Kitts to assist PAM in its electioneering campaign. If PAM is affiliated and associated with the Racist Republican and the Conservative Parties all over the globe, it is quite evident, quite logical that it just cannot work in the interest of the working class people of the country. You would never witness Republicans and Conservatives marching in any Labour Day march whether it is in St. Kitts, the USA or in Europe. You would never witness any oligarch or big business which finances PAM, marching in unison with the working class of the land. Just take a look at the way Theresa May, leader of the Racist anti-Black and anti-working class Conservative Party in England wanted to pack home all those Black people from the Caribbean who migrated to England donkey years ago to help re-build the country which was bombed destructively in the Second World War 1939-1945? Don’t you think that there are white folks who are up there, who are in the same predicament like the Black brothers and sisters from the Caribbean? Did you hear anything about Theresa May packing them up and sending them home? You see, the white folks resemble them. The colour BLACK is outstandingly VISIBLE!
I wonder if our Prime Minister when he journeyed to England with the other Caribbean Leaders really saw, really felt and really could empathize with the plight of his Caribbean people meted out by a Racist Conservative Party with which his PLP is affiliated? I wonder if he was really touched by their plight? I wonder if it dawned on him that all that Theresa May saw was Black people to be repatriated and he is of the same colour? I wonder if he now realizes that Cockroach has no cause to be in Fowl’s Political Party. That he and his party are out of their lane and out of their league and totally out of touch with reality? What gives him the impression that he is better than the brothers and sisters who were to be repatriated, his PhD Degree? Then, he should read the Autobiography of Malcolm X and hear what the Brother said about those brothers who have degrees and believe that the white Racists would look upon them differently, for all that the Racist would see is the colour; they would not be interested in no degrees, not even if our PM was to fly home to return with his!

How could any Black Conscious Politicians, the sons and the daughters of ex-slaves, in this enlightened day and age, deem themselves Conservatives and Republicans, never mind to be affiliated to them? The Republican Party was the Party of Abraham Lincoln the 16th President of the USA who was elected in1860 and again in 1864 during the Civil War. It was the Party which supported the Abolition of the Slave Trade. After the Civil War between the Northern and Southern States, because the Slaves outnumbered the whites in the South, many of them were elected to the Legislature and some even became Congress Men. This upward mobility of the freed Slaves incensed the Racist element of the Democratic Party which at that time was the Racist Party. Out of that Party emerged the KU KLUX KLAN in 1866 – The Most Racist Terrorist Organization in the world to reverse the gains made by the newly freed Black Slaves. Black People were burnt at the stake, their homes, their schools, their churches bombed and their barns burnt to the ground, their young girl children raped in front of their very eyes. When you hear some countries spouting HUMAN RIGHTS ABUSES, you don’t pay them no mind, for they are ashamed to deal with their sordid past history!

One year into his second term President Abraham Lincoln was assassinated on 14th April 1865, a Good Friday when he and his wife attended a Theater play in Washington DC. This pattern of assassinating those who either work in the interest of Black People or the Working Class on the Planet still exists today, for it is the intention of the Capitalist Racists of the world headed by those in the USA that the Black People and the Working Class must not rise to enjoy their standard of living. They must always stay crushed and defeated at the bottom of the Social ladder. Dear reader, I pose the question, which God of Justice, Love, and Fairplay, would create such a lopsided world where HE favours one race over the others and one social class to crush the masses of HIS CREATION? When HIS SON dwelt on the earth, didn’t they crucify HIM because HE fought on the side of the poor, the wretched, the disadvantaged and the downtrodden? Were HE to return to Planet Earth today and carry the same message of yesterday, wouldn’t HE be assassinated the same way they assassinated Abraham Lincoln and made several attempts to assassinate Fidel Castro who liberated his people from illiteracy, ignorance and disease?

This is the modus operandi (operation) of the capitalists. They must continue to enslave the masses of the world. Slavery was not really abolished, because the system cannot survive unless it can feed off free or cheap labour. As long as we have Political Parties like the CCM, the PLP and PAM which are anti- Black People and the Working Class of the land, we will never be free. You see, dear reader, the Racists and the capitalists do not really cherish these black leaders, but, as long as they keep the masses crushed and degraded they would lend them support because they are suppressing the masses so that the rich of any colour could become richer. They really do not tolerate the shade of the colour, but, once the working class and the Black masses are crushed, they would applaud and support them. In getting back to the Labour Day Celebrations, I wish to give a brief history on the origin of the DAY! I must point out that LABOUR DAY or MAY DAY is the same. In the some English speaking Caribbean, it is celebrated on the first Monday of May, so that the workers could enjoy a longer weekend with more planned activities. In Socialist Countries like Cuba, it is celebrated on the first Day in May.

Most citizens of the USA are totally uninformed about the INTERNATIONAL WORKERS DAY OR MAY DAY, assuming that it is a holiday which is celebrated in Communist or Socialist countries like Cuba, in North Korea and the Soviet Union. These citizens do not even know that the Workers Holiday originated in the State of Chicago in Capitalist USA. In the late 19th Century, the working class was in constant struggle to gain the 8 hour work day. Working conditions were deplorable (horrible, very bad, pitiable) and it was quite common to work 10 – 16 hours per day in unsafe conditions. Death and injury were common occurrences at many work places and inspired such books as the Jungle by Upton Sinclair and THE IRON HEEL by Jack London to be written. As early as the 1860’s workers agitated to shorten the work day without a cut in their pay, but it was not until the late 1880’s that organized labour garnered enough strength to declare the 8 hour workday without the consent of the employer, but demanded by the working class. At this time, Socialism was a new and attractive idea to working people, many of whom were drawn to its ideology of working class control over the production and distribution of all goods and services.

By: Drizel Hanley

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts (Thursday 17th May 2018)-A mother and her son -Marcella Fahie and Glenville Fahie both of Government Road, Nevis earlier this month were found guilty of Receiving.

According to the authorities in a statement this week, the charges stemmed from an ongoing investigation into reports of stolen building materials from a number of construction site.

“The Police in Nevis have been investigating a number of cases of larceny that occurred at several construction sites between late January and February in which a number of building materials were reported stolen. As a result of their investigations, on February 18, 2018, Police Officers executed a search warrant on the premises of Marcella Fahie and a number of stolen items were recovered from a structure that was under construction. Both Marcella Fahie and her son, Glenville Fahie, were arrested and charged on February 22 for the offences of Larceny and Receiving”, a police release said.

Marcella, was convicted and cautioned for the same offence.

Police say the trial was one of several for both as they are facing additional charges for Receiving and Larceny.

Prison Gets Rehab Tools, Equipment

By: Precious Mills
BASSETERRE, St.Kitts (Thursday 16th May 2018)-Officials at the Her Majesty’s Prison (HMP) this week were on the receiving end of donated by the rehabilitated equipment at an estimated cost of £$8,000 (pounds) from the European Union through the Regional Security System (RSS).

The ceremony was held yesterday (Tuesday) at the prison premises located on Cayon Street in Basseterre. The donated goods include computers, sewing machines and a saw.
The items were symbolically handed over to acting Superintendent of Prison Ashiela Connor by Director of Training with RSS Bryan Roberts.

Acting Superintendent of Prison Ashiela Connor while expressing gratitude for the tools, talked about the importance of investing in preventative programmes.

“The gifts that we have there is geared towards rehabilitation [but] I want to say and I want to challenge people that at this present time I think we need to shift a bit and shift towards prevention, and so I want to encourage partners now to look towards prevention and how we go about creating programmes that prevent the young people from coming to prison or getting involved in crime.”

He advised the EU and RSS to help in creating preventative programmes.

“I just want to thank the EU and the RSS for the kind donations of the gifts and I hope that my remarks would hold sleigh with them so that when they go back and they start to plan in terms of giving donations or doing whatever for St.Kitts-Nevis, we look at giving generously in terms of us creating programmes in terms of preventing rather than doing rehab for persons who are already in prison. We don’t want to be inviting people so that we have to rehabilitate them; we want to prevent them from coming to prison.”

Assistant Commissioner of Police Mr. Terrance James informed that the Regional Security System from its concept was a system that was put in place by the member states to work together for their common interest but as the years went on it has changed its name to the Regional Security System Training Institute.

He also shared that he was a member of the training institute from its commencement noting he was part of the Education Committee when it was changed to the Regional Security System Training Institute whilst adding “So I am a product of the Regional Security System.”

According to James, the Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force has also been a beneficiary from the European Union informing that it has sponsored the command mobile unit that was part of the donation given to the Federation as well as contributing to building a new police training complex at Buckley’s Site.

He then labelled the EU as being a “very good partner to the Federation.”

James continued: “We have seen throughout the years that times and things have changed, society has changed and so, the RSS has been an institution that has been building capacity in the member states and so Her Majesty’s Prison is a new venture that the RSS has embarked on to have capacity building for the inmates at the institution and so these tools and equipment…will go a long way in rehabilitating the inmates at this facility.”

He supported O’Connor’s sentiments about prevention noting that programmes have to be put in place for such.

Roberts expressed hope that the donated items would assist in strengthening rehabilitation initiatives.

He also expressed anticipation that “the tools and equipment would improve the technical and vocational training conducted at the prison improve skills which can open greater employment opportunities for presently incarcerated persons once they return to society and enable them to achieve success in more productive sectors of the national economy.”
Roberts assured the Prison Superintendent that his comments about preventative programmes are noted.

Health City Cayman Islands and Dr. Devi Shetty Win World Health Care Congress Awards

WASHINGTON D.C., United States, Wednesday May 16, 2018 – Health City Cayman Islands and its founder, Dr. Devi Shetty, won a total of three prestigious awards at America’s largest health care conference meeting in the U.S. capitol last month.

A panel of international medical care luminaries, assembled by the World Health Care Congress at the 2018 Health Value Awards, presented two of its major honors to Dr. Devi Shetty, founder of Health City Cayman Islands and chairman of Narayana Health. A third award was given to Health City Cayman Islands itself.

Dr. Shetty, an internationally recognized cardiac surgeon and entrepreneur, won a gold prize in the Lifetime Achievement awards for Clinical Care, which Health City Clinical Director Dr. Binoy Chattuparambil said was recognition of providing the highest quality of care based on U.S. parameters while still reducing the cost.

“Dr. Shetty wanted to prove he can do it in the Cayman Islands (not the least expensive place by any means in the Caribbean to do business) through efficiencies, through having the right model,” said Dr. Binoy, as he is known. He also noted that Health City’s pricing right now is about one-third the pricing that one would find at a similar institution in the United States.

Dr. Shetty won a second gold Lifetime Achievement award for his outstanding Public Leadership. “As Dr. Shetty often states, ‘a solution that isn’t affordable isn’t a solution’ and we at Health City are fulfilling his vision by offering super-specialty tertiary care at affordable prices – thereby creating greater access to health care for many more people from the region and beyond,” Dr. Binoy said.

The third prize received by the Health City Cayman Islands team was the silver award in the Direct Care Providers category. Health City Director of Business Development Shomari Scott said: “It’s always good to have a body as esteemed as the World Congress actually state that, ‘yes, Health City, not only are you doing great work, but we’re going to give you an award just to show our appreciation of what you’re doing in the health care space’.” He added that Health City was being considered a “disrupter” in the medical field, demonstrating that the highest quality outcomes can be provided at affordable prices.

Health City, a Joint Commission International-accredited tertiary care hospital in Grand Cayman, was one of 57 finalists selected from the hundreds vying for a variety of awards in several categories.

The 2018 Health Value Awards ceremony took place at Marriott Wardman Park Hotel in Washington, D.C., on Sunday, April 29 as part of the 15th Annual World Health Care Congress.

More than 350 nominees competed in the awards to be the best and brightest applications to improve health outcomes, reduce costs and implement innovative health industry practices.

Health City Cayman Islands was represented at the annual World Health Care Congress and the 2018 Health Value Awards by Clinical Director Dr. Binoy Chattuparambil, Director of Business Development Shomari Scott, USA Sales Specialist Mary Jones and board member Gene Thompson.

The awards – silver, gold and the lead diamond prizes – are sponsored by World Congress, the Validation Institute and the Health Rosetta Institute.

Caribbean Hospitality Forum Offers Critical Chance To Learn

MIAMI, United States, Wednesday May 16, 2018 – Caribbean hoteliers and industry stakeholders will immerse themselves in three days of intensive education and networking in Miami next month, at the fourth Caribbean Hospitality Industry Exchange Forum (CHIEF), happening at the Hyatt Regency Miami from June 22 to 24.

Produced by the Caribbean Hotel and Tourism Association (CHTA), CHIEF is a high-level forum for hospitality education with interactive workshops, panel discussions and the sharing of best practices.

“CHIEF has established itself as the preeminent forum for the region’s hospitality professionals to share ideas and learn from each other, and we look forward to another weekend of stimulating presentations and discussions to help our industry,” said Karolin Troubetzkoy, CHTA’s President.

General sessions this year will consider the importance of having a proactive communications strategy during crises; promoting a culture of inclusion, focusing on women in leadership positions; and how the traditional hotel sector can best cope with the transformative nature of the accommodations industry.

The breakout sessions deal with operations, sales and marketing and other aspects of industry sustainability. Delegates will explore timely and vital topics such as insurance coverage, crisis communications, human resource development, customer satisfaction, guest reviews, storytelling, energy efficiency, digital marketing and virtual reality technology.

“CHIEF delegates – from frontline staff to senior management leaders – will gain valuable knowledge and insight to prepare them for the wide variety of challenges facing today’s hospitality industry professionals,” said Frank Comito, CHTA’s CEO and Director General.

Professional development and a vibrant speed networking session will feature again this year at CHIEF, which will also host Taste of the Caribbean, where the region’s best chefs and their teams will compete. Taste of the Caribbean also offers insight and experience for food and beverage participants, who can learn the latest trends and techniques emerging from Caribbean kitchens.

Also returning to Miami this year will be CHTA’s Caribbean305 event, where flavors from more than a dozen Caribbean nations will be simmering at the culinary and cultural celebration taking place on Miami’s Jungle Island on Saturday, June 23, 2018 at 8 p.m.
