Programme runners-up

Group Senior Human Resource Officer Gloria Esdaille Robinson, in welcoming the students to the TDC family, expressed “We have you for seven critical and perhaps the most important developmental years of your life, and guess what we do get to know you personally so go the distance. The five years of high school and the two years of CFBC. Do not fall short of the expectation to complete the full period of this programme for which TDC has committed to you.”

She urged parents not to allow their children to quite the programme.

“Parents, don’t let them quit the programme because you think they could be working elsewhere and earning more to help you. Believe you me I know what I’m talking about. A full education through the WCT Scholarship programme will position them to earn much more than minimum wage and it will save you the parents from paying for evening classes because they choose [not] to leave the scholarship. Go the distance with the programme.”

Addressing the awardees, she had this to say: “Students learn as much as you can. Recognise, as you are surrounded by family friends and those students who are the runners up for this prestigious scholarship, that you have been blessed with a unique opportunity to be molded, shaped and prepared for the world ahead. Take the instructions you will receive seriously and maximize your potential to reach for your dreams. There have been some students who unfortunately made some poor choices and did not complete the programme. I hasten to say, do not be like them. Remember that this is a partnership for success so protect your relationship with us by taking responsibility for your performance and returning the highest grades in all subject areas displaying exemplary behaviour in and out of school and of course while you’re at TDC.”

Esdaille Robinson continued: “Communicate well with us and we believe that at the end of this chapter of your lives, you will say it was great for me to have been a member of TDC. The sky is the limit for you students. Let us work diligently and aspire to achieve our company’s motto ‘Together We Succeed’.”

Programme Director Nicolas Menon, during his remarks, spoke about first chairman of TDC (Mr. Warren C. Tyson) informing that the programme was established after him in 1981.

“…I’ve never got to meet him but I was told he had a passion for education, training and developing people so we took that and developed this programme in his honour.”

He explained that the scholarship programme is designed to assist students in providing financial assistance through the course of their high school careers not just financial assistance but also support “because the challenges today are different to the challenges that I faced and my colleagues faced so it’s a difficult journey that you are going to have to traverse.”

The TDC official went on to say: “It’s not just about school though, it’s about work, setting self-discipline, allowing you to have skillsets that are transferable so that you are marketable to the workplace in the future. We expect you to come in and work with us on your vacation, learn about our different departments, learn about the business that we’re in and see if any peek your interest…”

Menon listed areas such as engineering, sales, marketing and Information technology and further told the students “It gives you a chance to touch and feel all those careers and professions as well. It’s not just work though; there are some fun things involved.”

Such leisure events include Christmas and summer holiday activities.

According to him, to date over 240 students that have passed through the programme costing the company over $6 million.

“It’s a huge investment for us but we believe a very, very worthwhile investment in all of you. At present 47 students are in the programme with eight graduating this year [plus] six (6) going into CFBC [Clarence Fitzroy Bryant College]…”

Additionally, he admonished. “It’s a pleasure having students who are enthusiastic. It’s a nightmare having students that don’t choose to participate fully so please take this seriously,”

Assistant Secretary in the Ministry of Education Dorothy Warner has applauded TDC for its contribution in the academic field in saying that such a programme provides a “wonderful opportunity for TDC-a corporate giant in the Federation to display its partnership with the Ministry of Education in celebrating the academic prowess of our grade six students now entering secondary schools. The funds distributed through this project improves the chances of success of students who would otherwise not have the wherewithal to do well at school.”

One officer was shot injured,” Commissioner of Police Ian Queeley informed during a press conference held on Saturday 1st September at the Police Training Complex in Newtown.

Sgt. Powell was shot dead on Saturday 18th August at about1 AM at his bar located in his home community of Newton Ground. As investigation unfolded and more information became available, Taylor became the prime suspect.

After losing that gun fight to police this past weekend, Sgt. Powell’s issued weapon-which was used to fatally wound him (Sgt. Powell)-was found at the scene where Taylor was killed.

Sgt. Powell ‘Shabba’ Leon

As disclosed by the top cop: “On Friday 31st August, members of the special joint team conducting a search operation for the wanted man. Acting on information, the team cordoned off an area in Bouncing Hill which had several premises within the cordon and proceeded to search the area.”

Taylor was shot multiple times about his body and died at the scene.

Queeley said investigators from the Violent Crime Unit commenced their investigations and technicians from the Forensic Unit visited and processed the scene.

‘I’ve been advised that according to our records, the pistol used by Vincent Taylor to shoot and injure our officer was the department’s firearm issued to our fallen colleague Sergeant Powell. It was also reported that he relieved of his firearm by his attackers during the time of his death,” the COP also shared.

He explained that the ballistic works carried out on the bullets and other shell casing found on the scenes have just been completed and  the “results indicate that it was his (Sgt. Powell) weapon that was relieved of at the time that was used to kill him.”

COP Queeley went on to say that Taylor at the time of his death was also carrying a black bag pack with a mask, a pair of gloves, tie straps and a knife.

Those items, he said, are in police custody as “we believe there are of some evidential value to the investigations.”

He pointed out that “also on another premises which we believe he had been occupying that was searched, there are other items of evidential value that were found and taken into police custody from that scene.”

He commended persons who had been working behind the scenes in the various departments on these cases.

According to him: “Our officers and technicians have been exerting commendable efforts with the limited resources at our disposal given the recent gun-related incidents that they are currently dealing with.”

COP Queeley has also commended “members of the public who came forward in an overwhelming way who have offered support and have carried out their civic duties in assisting the police in this matter.”

He added: “We would not have found him without your help. You have given police renewed hope. Hope that there are still many who are on the side of law and order.”

PM Bashed For Fighting Response On Crime Fight

By: Spokesman Newsroom

BASSETERRE, St.Kitts (Friday 31st August 2018) – Eight (8) days after the opposition St.Kitts-Nevis Labour Party (SKNLP) held a conference to address crime in calling for a nationalistic approach in tackling the issue, a direct response from Prime Minister Dr. Timothy Harris on the issue has prompted the SKNLP to demand that he takes back the “childish and malicious” remarks made.

While speaking at a housing solution ceremony held at Pine Garden in Shadwell on Tuesday 28th August, PM Harris accused the SKNLP of inciting violence in the country saying in part: “It is the sure sign of hypocrisy of a desperate and disloyal Denzil Douglas that he wants to keep a conference he says on crime. Conference on crime? Conference on crime?”

“…I am of the view that opposition elements are inciting crime in the country because Denzil Douglas believes that if he create chaos and confusion in the land he may have a chance to regain power. I call on Denzil Douglas to act responsibly. Your time has gone and never again will Denzil Douglas lead this country,” he further claimed.

Opposition Leader Dr. Denzil Douglas, in statement made the following day, demanded that PM Harris “publicly retracts his spurious and childish allegation, and begin for once to focus his energies on leading the nation through this monumental social crisis that we have on our hands.”

Dr. Douglas stated that: “The members of Her Majesty’s Loyal Opposition wish to document our very strong objection, condemnation and rejection of any and all notions that any of its members are inciting or attempting to incite violence in the Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis. The Opposition is comprised of members from two political parties, both of which have a long history of nation-building, and this is a fact that can neither be ignored nor disproved.”

The opposition leader pointed out that “less than twenty-four hours prior the Prime Minister’s inflammatory statement, the son of a government Minister was gunned down in cold blood.”

According to him: “In spite of this utterly calamitous situation, Prime Minister Harris felt compelled to spew highly disparaging and divisive sentiments in the public sphere on the issue of crime although he knows full well that the Opposition has been calling for a unified approach to combating this raging social cancer for almost four years.”

Dr. Douglas continued: “It is both unfortunate and ironic that Prime Minister Dr. Timothy Harris, the head of the tripartite coalition administration and the Minister of National Security, continues to purposely ignore the Opposition’s call for a united approach to crime-fighting in the Federation. We continue to insist that crime is a social problem that transcends the political divide. It is a problem that can only be remedied if all stakeholders – Government, Opposition, the Church and Civil Society – work together in this regard.”

The Opposition leader expressed that it “is clear that even whilst in government, Dr. Harris intends to politicise crime with the hope of making some myopic political gain.”

“His insistence on casting ludicrous aspersions and making blatantly inflammatory statements serves as a clear indication to the general public that Dr. Timothy Harris, as the Minister of National Security, has no clue as to how to tackle the issue of crime; neither does he have any intention whatsoever of seriously exhausting the relevant options in an effort to reduce the country’s rapidly increasing crime rate.”

BASSTERRE, St.Kitts (Friday 31st August 2018) – Twelve children on the island have successfully completed their month-long lessons at 12th annual Traditional Musical Workshop, coordinated by well-known Cultural Preservationist Winston ‘Zack’ Nisbett, and during this past weekend’s graduation ceremony, the featured speaker well-known educator, playwright and novelist Loughlin Tatem schooled those present on the importance of good behaviour.

The closing ceremony was held on Saturday 25th August at the new location of Zack’s Historical-Cultural Library Museum situated at Buckley’s Estate, for the second year, before the presence of family members and other well-wishers gathered.

The graduates who attended were brothers Dalan Roberts and Aiden Roberts and also Jethro Douglas and Bernard Phillip.

The workshop- which ran from Monday 30th July to 25th August- as usual featured Music specialist Robert ‘Bobby’ Martin was held under the theme: ‘Discipline Continues To Be The Key’.

Students were taught how to play the banjo, quarto, guitar and triangle and lively renditions performed by the music students at the closing ceremony.

In commending the performances of the children, Nisbett said: “I think they were all good” which landed more thunderous applause from the audience.

Speaking with this reporter, he said “To me the workshop was great.” The workshop coordinator revealed that most of the students were absent from the graduation ceremony because they were engaged in other workshops and camps over the summer period.

As it relates to Tatem’s presentation, he touched on the subjects of bad peer pressure, self-control, bullying and career choice.

“It’s not everything that comes to your head that should come to your mouth. There are thing you’re supposed to think and only you alone know that you are thinking it. There are some people who have mouths like buckets with holes…no kind of thinking, no kind of self-control or self-management.”

Louglin Tatem

On the point of bullying, he encouraged: “Respect other people’s feeling; don’t bully anybody.”

He went on to make reference to the Christmas carol called ‘Rudolph The Red Nose Reindeer’

“All of the other reindeer used to laugh and call him names. They wouldn’t let poor Rudolph in in any reindeer games. There is a name for that and it is called bullying. Be careful about how you regard other people’s feelings.”

Touching on the topic of negative peer pressure, the youngsters were told: “Don’t always follow the path of your brain that tells you that you need other people’s company. I say to students all the time.. I see students like you, a little boy would get up and he would go to the teacher to mark a book or something and when he comes back down he is not watching his seat and somebody has a pencil with the point sticking up in the chair so when the poor boy sits down on the chair, the pencil will dig him on his bum.”

“It that right or is it wrong?” he questioned in quizzing the children who replied “Wrong!”.
Tatem added: “Those kind of actions are done by people who do not know how to tell themselves ‘no’; who do not know how to tell their brain ‘no’.”

Additionally, he admonished the graduates and other children in the audience to choose their career path early in life and speak to professionals in the fields that they select.
“Whenever I ask children and they tell me I don’t know, I ask them where is the office for ‘I don’t know’ because there is no job called I don’t know.Pick something even if you change it tomorrow…Talk to somebody who does that job.”

Tatem has commended Nisbett for doing a “tremendous job.”

Nisbett thanked all who were instrumental in helping to make the workshop a success including Delisle Walwyn and Company Ltd which has been onboard for the past nine (9) years, Development Bank, RAMS supermarket, videographer and technician Mervin Sage, businessman Carlton Dupont, businesswoman Karen Wyatt, event assistant Sam Franks, Pastor Walsworth Foreman (an employee of the Ministry of Finance) as well as the parents and guardians.

Police are, however, challenging details shared by Samari ‘Storm’ Webbe, who is at the center of alleged police brutality which has attracted widespread public debate, in claiming that the teenager got shot during a gun struggle between him and an officer while he was in police custody on Friday 24th August.

In a 37-seconds cell-phone video which circulated via social media last Saturday (25th August), Webbe spoke about the encounter he had which “start from in de yard”, involving two police officers, moments before he was going to eat.

That video was taped by a male visitor while he (Webbe) laid in bed receiving treatment at the Joseph N. France General Hospital in Basseterre.

“Afterwards dey come, dey put me on de landing. He put he foot on me head [and] tell me look down on the ground,” he told also.

The video was cut short after a hospital employee-believed to be a nurse- was heard informing Webbe’s visitor that no recording nor picture taking were allowed.

This media house has gathered that the teenager, who originally hails from the sister isle of Nevis, is also claiming that he was he was taken to the Sandy Point Police Station then to a hilly section of the Newton ground community where he was beaten by cops on the way.

Further allegations point to Webbe being shot at and also questioned about what he knew about Sgt. Powell’s murder.

Police are reporting that sometime last Friday morning (24th August), Webbe was taken into police custody for questioning in relation to an ongoing search operation for wanted man Vincent Taylor and that preliminary investigations have revealed that at some point during the questioning, one of the Officers turned to speak with the other and Webbe rushed towards that Officer and held on to his firearm in an attempt to take it away.

“A scuffle ensued and Webbe was shot in the shoulder. He was rushed to the JNF Hospital for medical attention by the Officers where he is currently receiving treatment,” a police statement read.

Reportedly, the Forensic Services Unit and the Violent Crimes Unit both visited and processed the scene and carried out enquiries.

Police say that a parallel investigation will be done by the Office of Professional Standards – the unit responsible for overseeing investigations into all reports involving police officers.

Taylor, 37, who has two given addresses- Sandy Point and McKnight, is currently a prime suspect in relation to the shooting death of Sgt. Powell, 44, who was gunned down at his bar in Newton Ground on Saturday 18th August at about 1:00 AM.

Police are offering a reward of $50,000 for information leading to his arrest and prosecution.
