Child-Friendly Advice On Balancing Books And Fun

BASSETERRE, St.Kitts (Friday 8th February 2019)-Young scholar 11-year-old Leandro Peets has some advice for his peers and children in general as it relates balancing school work and having fun.

This reporter had a chit-chat with the grade 6 student of the Tucker-Clarke Primary School (formerly New Town Primary) on Monday this week (4th February) at the school following a ceremony for graduates of the Hour of Code Competition organised by the Junior Achievers programme in December 2018 featuring title sponsor Insurance Company of the West Indies (ICWI).

More than 80 students ages 7 to 11 participated in the first time computer science activity. Each were awarded certificates of completion.

Programme Coordinator and teacher Yvette Ross seen with some of the students who took part in the Hour of Code Competition (Spokesman Snap)

Peets, in giving his take on the technological exercise, told: “This coding competition was a great event. It inspired me to code more and we’re very grateful at the Tucker Clarke Primary School and I think it needs to be implemented more in schools.”

He pointed to the understanding of the coding competition which involved “the formulation of games such as Subway Surfers.”

Quizzed on what advice he has for his schoolmates and other children in balancing school work and having fun, Peets said: “I think we need to focus on our school work because there is a time and place for everything; a time to speak, a time to wake up and there is a time play so I think we have to have a limit on how we play games. We need to focus more on our school work in order to be a great scholar. I think we need to be more disciplined and we need to know when to play and when to do our school work.”

ICWI Business Development Officer Nordia Dobbs highlighted the good corporate citizen duty of the company in ensuring that the children of the Federation of St. Kitts- Nevis and by extension the Caribbean region are on the same level with other countries around the globe as it relates to technological advances as she applauded the youngsters for having now “been exposed to one of the most exciting and important fields that exists in the world today.”

According to her: “This, as it has been proven by new social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Snap Chat and WhatsApp, is also the one industry that is best driven and led by young people the world over. Before your entry into the programme, none of you had any knowledge of coding but now that the exercise is over, you have become part of a small elite group of Kittitians and Nevisians with skills and competencies in coding.”

Programme Coordinator and teacher Yvette Ross, during an interview with this reporter, said the initiative was successful.

“It was successful programme; the students did enjoy it and they even went about telling their other peers and they did the activity at home. It boosts children creativity and it helps them not to just think inside the box but also outside of the box,” she outlined.

She said also that “the next step is to introduce other students to the coding skill because it’s only a few of them who did it and so the other children were eager to do it. They’ve come daily asking ‘When are we going to do it again?’ and so the next step is to introduce it to the school on a whole.”

Asked to give a comment on the advantages of children being exposed to that aspect of computer science at such young ages, Ross had this to say: “In doing things constructive with technology, it helps to boost children’s creativity because we have children who are just blunt when it comes to solving issues and in dealing with this code, it helps them to form their thinking and helps them to want to do it because number one- they wanted to finish before their peers and number two- they wanted to see what the end result would be like and it was success. In this coding, they were able to use dance  that children are familiar with so even some dance moves that I wasn’t sure about , I was able myself as a teacher to  interact with the coding game and  find myself doing the dance at home to so it was fun.”

In giving advice to parents and guardians, she talked about enhanced learning in the field of computer technology.

“Parents, I’m asking you to allow your children to broaden their horizon, don’t just stick to the book; technology is improving. Yes, there is negative and positive but more so we want to encourage them to dwell upon the positive things that will enhance their learning and even build better student character within them,” Ross stated.

Old Road Bay Design To Feature 30 Feet Seaward Displacement

By: Precious Mills

BASSETERRE, St.Kitts (Friday 1st February 2019)- The government’s Old Road Rehabilitation Project, estimated to cost in the vicinity ofEC$ 31 million with assistance from the government of the Republic of China (Taiwan), is said to be a comprehensive design which features a seaward displacement of about 30 feet.

On Tuesday 29th January, a contract signing ceremony was held at the Old Road Fisheries Complex parking lot in the vicinity of Sprat Net.

Affixing their signatures to documents were Director of Public Works Cromwell Williams as well as the owner of Rock & Dirt Ltd. Alexes Hazel (local contractor) and his son Jermaine Hazel.

This project is expected to see a 12-month completion timeline.

Williams pointed out that initially concern was about the threat of falling rocks as it relates to the rehabilitation project.

“We were concerned with the threat of the falling rocks but and thanks in part to hurricane Maria, we were reminded that this stretch of road is also vulnerable to storm surge. You would recall that after hurricane Maria in 2017, this road was seriously damaged, was cut off, impassable and so the solution that we’re looking at in addressing this project is comprehensive in that we are not just looking at the safety issue on the hillside but we’re looking at building resilience into the road network from storm surge in this instance.”

The Public Works official praised the design put together by ADeB Consultants of Jamaica.

“We are satisfied that they have presented to us a solution that is most practical and economical. This project would see the construction of a new road of approximately 1.2 kilometers long with a seaward displacement of around 30 feet and at an elevated level of about six to eight feet. The entire length of the road would be protected by rock armouring ranging up to 20 tons. This would be amongst the largest capital projects undertaken by a local contractor,” he remarked.

He then congratulated Rock & Dirt Ltd. for having won the bid for the project.

As understood, about five (5) local contractors participated in the bidding process.

Cromwell highlighted that Taiwan “will make a significant contribution to the project financially.”

He went on to say that: “The Republic of China (Taiwan) continues to play a major role in partnering in the development of our Federation in many areas including agriculture, education, national security and public infrastructure just to name a few.”

Resident Taiwan Ambassador Tom Lee, who has been residing in the Federation for about five months, made an observation about the importance of fixing the road.

“I’ve been posted to your beautiful country for a little five months and I cannot remember how many times I have passed this area; I would say at least over twenty (20) times, and I would say that I fully understand the need to rehabilitate this road. If you look on the road, one the one side , the road is very close to the sea and on the other side the road is very close to the mountain so if you don’t have very good eyesight …especially at night when you drive pass this area, you have to be very careful because you don’t want to fall into the sea, and at the same time if it rains especially very heavily then you also need to be aware of the falling rocks so I fully believe that if a hurricane comes now you don’t want to use this section of the road.”

Ambassador Lee added: “As the old saying goes, a friend in need is a friend indeed. The Republic of China (Taiwan) as a strong ally of St.Kitts and Nevis, we are very willing to respond to your need and provide timely assistance  so we are very pleased to be one of the major donors of this project, and you can be rest assured that  we will continue to work hard so  that more people can benefit from our cooperation projects.”

Time To Erect 1935 Buckley’s Uprising Monument

BASSETERRE, St.Kitts (Friday 1st February 2019)-  For yet another year, the Rastafari Nyabinghi Theocracy paid tribute to the 1935 Buckley’s Uprising, and as usual the event was used to echo calls-including debatable sentiments- to have a monument erected in honour of the significant historical event now in its 84th annual tribute.

A ceremony held on Monday 28th January (the actual commemorative day) at Buckley’s Estate was observed under the theme: ‘The Martyrs Ultimate Sacrifice Of the Buckley’s Uprising Should Never Go Untold.’

Special gifts compliments of TDC and commemorative plaques from the Rastafari group were presented to 86- year- old Viola Warner, daughter of John Allen who is one of the recognised figures of the Buckley’s Uprising who lost his life that day as well as to Lady Rosamund Inniss, widow of Sir Probyn Inniss who was former Governor of St.Kitts, Nevis and Anguilla and also a well-known historian.

Notably, that day was Warner’s birthday. She lost her dad at the age of two.

Chairperson of the Organisation of Rastafari In Unity (ORU) Ras Iroy from the sister of Nevis, applauded the yearly tribute efforts saying in part: “Big up the Nyabinghi Theocracy Order for standing firm in being a leading example in this country in what it means for I and I to defend I and I rights, what it means to stand up for your rights. Nyabinghi Theocracy Order and the Rastafari community has done that job…”

Chairperson of the Buckley’s Uprising Committee Akilah Byron-Nisbett who is also Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly said the committee has been formed by the government “to put into motion the plan for the memorialisation of the event of January 28th 1935.”

She continued: “I have been made aware and fully schooled on previous committees or groups that came together in the past with the hopes of being able to do the same that is memorialise the great event …However, here we are on the 84th anniversary of this great event in our history and still we speak of trying to find ways in which we can forever etch the event of that day into the history of our great country. I have heard the cries of other members who are now serving on this committee.”

Committee members include Stanley Franks, Livingston Huggins, Ras Iyah (of the Nyabinghi Theocracy Order) and Charice Gumbs.

“They (committee members) have become weary of the continued talk and no action. They have become disheartened that year after year, we come here at the site of the Buckley’s Estate. Great speeches are given but nothing more than words until the next January 28th is upon us,” Byron-Nisbett stated.

She gave commitment that “this committee will not just be another talk shop. We will work beyond the challenges that we are already facing and for once and for all memorialise the events of January 28th 1935.”

According to her: “We must do right by our martyrs. We must do right and stand by the stand that they made and truly work towards to forever memorialising the events of this days. No more talk, no more words, it’s time for action. I am therefore calling on everyone here to stand with us the committee in seeing the events of the Buckley’s Uprising truly being memorialised for once and for all.”

The Buckley’s Uprising Committee head said come the 85th anniversary “we will indeed be able to say that we have accomplished the task of memorialising the events of this day in history. It is time for action!”

Parliamentary Representative for Constituency Three (of the St.Kitts-Nevis Labour Party Opposition) Konris Maynard thanked members of Nyabinghi Theocracy Order “for their deep unwavering commitment to the memory of the martyrs and our ancestors who fought for the freedoms that we enjoy today. Truth be told had it not been for the Nyabinghi Theocracy Order, we may not annually pause to recognise this day to pay tribute to this remarkable sacrifice that our forefathers made.”

He added: “I therefore join with the call that I have made over the years that apart from a monument which we must  have and which has to be done, and apart from recognition as a heritage site, January 28th should be made a national holiday.”

Maynard addressed the labelled talk shop attached to paying tribute to the 1935 events and spoke about the role he has been playing to honour such.

“Now many people this evening have mentioned that every year January 28th we have a talk shop and very little or no action. Now although my time as representative of this area has been on the opposition benches of Parliament, I have committed to do whatever I can to achieve the goal of memorialisation of this most historic site, and so over the last five years or so, I have continually sponsored the erection and re-erection of the billboard as you enter Buckley’s Estate which in small measure memorialse the events of 1935 and is the only thing we have at the present in the location that does this. This of course is not enough. I again give my commitment to this initiative to memorialise the history because our ancestors deserve this.”

Maynard went on to signal his interest to be a part of the Buckley’s Uprising Committee.

“ I believe that this event the birth of democracy is of such national importance that it should rise above politics and political differences and therefore I wish to let the committee know that as the elected Parliamentary Representative for this area and as the representative of the Labour movement  for this area; a Labour movement that was so instrumental in bring social advancement to the people after  the vents of 1935 I am  willing and available to  be a part of the committee  to ensure that all views  and perspectives play a part in  creating what should be a truly national treasure permanently etched in our history in stone and public recognition.”

Tourism Minister Talks Concerns Over Music Festival Accommodation

By: Precious Mills

BASSETERRE, St.Kitts (Friday 1st February 2019)- Minister of Tourism Lindsay Grant has  expressed concern that the availability of rooms to accommodate overseas visitors during the upcoming 23rd annual St.Kitts Music Festival in June could be an issue.

To this end, small business owners and home owners are being encouraged to prepare their facilities.

“Our challenge, I believe is going to be one of accommodation because last year, we had full-time house. I think all the hotels were generally full and if they were full last year, I believe with Buju’s announcement coming to the St.Kitts Music Festival, we’re going to have a little issue.”

Grant made the disclosure during an interview with reporters following a press conference held on the morning of Monday 28th January at the Ocean Terrance Inn (OTI) at Fortlands whereby twenty- one (21) additional acts were announced in completing the 2019 roster of the well-anticipated yearly extravaganza.

2019 St. Kitts Music Festival Friday Line Up

The added national, regional and international entertainers combined are: Charly Black, Melanin (Kittitian female trio), Omari Banks, I-Mark, Cocoa Tea, Infamus, La Insuperable, Rucas HE, Mapy (The Violin Queen), Akaii, Shal Marshall, 5 Star Akil, Ras Vally, Farmer Nappy, Nadia Batson, Nu Vybes Band, Skinny Fabulous, Fimba, Small Axe Band (reigning Sugar Mas Road March Champions), Edwin Yearwood and Krosfyah and also Ella Mai.

At a media briefing held in early December last year, Davido, Smokey Robinson, Popcaan and French Montana were part of the first wave of artistes to be unveiled while Buju Banton was announced at Cooler Fete later on that month.

Festival Chairman Damion Hobson, during his remarks at this week’s press conference, issued a call to small business owners and home owners to prepare to accommodate visitors.

2019 St. Kitts Music Festival Saturday Line up

“The demands for tickets and hotel accommodation has already started. We encourage everyone overseas to contact their hotel of choice now to make their bookings. We also encourage owners of small inns and private home to get involved to make their facility available because the arrivals from overseas will be high,” he said.

Asked by this reporter about that type of ‘Air B & B (Bread and Breakfast)’ accommodation type of appeal, the Tourism Minister had this to say: “We anticipate because the pressure is going to be on accommodation, we anticipate  that we’re going to need them so we’re getting people geared up mentally to understand that there is going to be a need to fill so as you’ve just said business is going to be like  Air B & B situations where people rent out their rooms, their houses, their villas (or) whatever it is  so we’re hoping that  once people hear, they get ready and we won’t have an issue in that regard.”

Notably, two hotel development started under the previous government is expected to provide additional rooms just in time of the festivity.

“However, I know Koi Hotel is bringing 101 rooms on line in April of this year so we’re going to have an additional 101 rooms and the T-Loft is going to bring 200 rooms on stream in May. So hopefully by the time the Music Festival rolls around, we’ll have 300 additional rooms on stream and that may help. In any event, I think that we’re going to struggle in terms of accommodation.”

Grant said: “Presently, we have about 1,100 rooms. Over the next 24 months, we expect to bring on about 500 so we are expecting to have at least 1500 rooms…so we’re still relatively young in terms of rooms and you must understand that 196 rooms are being pulled out of the system because of Four Seasons…so we have our challenges but we don’t want to grow the economy too much in terms of the number so we are growing the number of rooms steadily.”

The three-nightly concert will be held from Thursday 26th to Saturday 29th June at the Kim Collins Athletic Stadium located in Bird Rock.

According to Chairman of the Artiste Selection Committee Jonel Powell, who made the announcement presentation, the 2019 line-up will “satisfy everybody” and will make the yearly event “the biggest” while Chairman Hobson is of the view that: “This St.Kitts Music Festival is going to be epic.”

Relatives Of Gregory Mills Grateful For Eyewitness

By: Spokesman Newsroom

BASSETERRE, St.Kitts– Relatives of 2017 murder victim Gregory Mills are grateful that the key witness participated in the recent court trial despite the outcome.

Doubt created within the minds of jurors going on the testimony of the key eyewitness in the 2017 shooting death of Gregory Mills, resulted in a majority ‘Not Guilty’ verdict, freeing murder accused Omax Bye last Friday afternoon (25th January) at the Basseterre High Court.

, That male witness linked Bye to the deadly shooting after claiming to have recognised him by face having known him for years. However, his credibility was crushed by Bye’s lawyer who cited that he (key witness) came forward after being caught up in a child maintenance matter and ending up in police custody for which the authorities helped to work out a pay advancement to handle that debt situation.

The 12-member jury was divided at 10 ‘Not Guilty’ and 2 ‘Guilty’ in the session presided over by Justice Trevor Warde.

Bye was represented by Marsha Henderson in the trial which begun on Tuesday that week (22nd January) while the prosecution team consisted of Vaughan Henderson and Teshaun Vasquez.

The late well-known owner of Greg’s Pizza- located on the corner of Cayon and College Streets- was gunned down on the eve of his 28th birthday (Tuesday 9th May).

Mills’ shooting death rocked the Federation as an outpour of sentiments described his as hardworking and humble among other admirable qualities by people who knew him personally and business wise.

Police reported on Wednesday 10th May that two persons had been taken into custody assisting with investigations following the deadly shooting which took place at Gillard Meadows in the St. Peter’s community.

The shooting took place shortly before 5 PM that day and investigations revealed that Mills was shot by an assailant(s) while driving in the area.

On Thursday 18th May, on the eve of Mills’ funeral service, Bye of Upper Shaw Avenue, McKnight –who was 31 years old at the time-was taken into police custody and was formally arrested and charged in connection with the shooting death.
