O’Flaherty Jr. Union-Minded Even On Deathbed

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts (Friday 10th May 2019)-Known for his vast involvement in labour and industrial relations, longstanding President of the St.Kitts-Nevis Trades and Labour Union (SKNT&LU) Joseph O’flaherty Jr. died earlier this week on Labour Day (International Workers’ Day)-Monday 6th May- which many mourners and admirers have linked to his passion in seeing to the welfare of workers in the Federation.

At age 48, he died during the early morning at the Joseph N. France General Hospital after succumbing to an illness; his death occurring hours before the annual Labour Day March organised by the SKNT&LU in partnership with the sister body the St.Kitts-Nevis Labour Party.

As usual, he had been one of the notable figures at the yearly outing as well as the wreath laying ceremony –held on the eve of the march-at the gravesites of fallen comrades of the Labour movement including his father Joseph Fidel O’Flaherty-who died on 6th February 2003 at the age of 50- and was also a long- serving Trade Unionist as the Assistant General Secretary to Batumba Tak who currently still occupies the General Secretary position.

Hence, O’Flaherty Jr.’s presence was especially felt amidst this year’s occasion.

It is understood that shortly after being hospitalised, the topic of the 2019 Labour Day plans and preparations was brought up by him as his deep interest in workers’ relation affairs remained intact even amidst his health situation.

Seven years ago at the 73rd annual conference of the St.Kitts-Nevis Trades & Labour Union held on Sunday 28th October 2012 under theme ‘Tackling The Challenges of the Future’, O’Flaherty emerged as the newly-elected president, succeeding Clifford Thomas who served in that capacity for a period of seven years and did not seek reelection thereafter.

Before attaining the president post, for three years in a row, O’Flaherty served as Assistant General Secretary to Tak also.

In what would have been his last Labour Day speech in May 2018, O’Flaherty commented: “Today, we marched in solidarity of each other, as we recognise the tremendous value of our individual and collective skills, talents and expertise that contribute to the economic and social advancement of this country and of our families.”

He expressed hope that each individual would have taken some time to reflect on the achievements gained for workers over the years that are very much enjoyed today by every working man and woman.

O’Flaherty went on to say: “It was not always this way. It took the sacrifice of men and women of the Labour Movement, including the Trades and Labour Union, to fight and struggle for the improvement in working and living conditions in this country. The rights of workers that you enjoy today did not happen overnight, rather, the journey was long, requiring steadfast advocacy, sometimes protests, dialogue and some degree of militancy at some points.”

He pointed out then that the history of the struggle of workers in this country is documented.

“The Buckley’s uprising in 1934, right here in St. Kitts, was to have long influences throughout the rest of the Caribbean. Indeed, this country has long been at the forefront of workers’ rights. But of course, in every era, and in a developing modern economy, there are always new challenges for workers, and the St. Kitts-Nevis Trades and Labour Union continues to work on behalf of its members and workers of this country.

The late top Union official told the gathering of workers about the Union’s constructive dialogue with government and the private sector in “working to forge policies and laws that protect workers in a modern economy while at the same time ensuring that the framework exists to that workers can be productive and globally competitive.”

“Far from it, my fellow workers, the struggle for improved wages, better work conditions, access to training, education and social support, proper skills certification, even housing, that struggle continues and is of great importance to every one of us,” he added.

O’Flaherty invited persons to who are not yet Union members to join the organisation.

“We want you to take serious consideration on becoming a member. Members of the executive will be happy to speak with you about how you benefit and how members can make a difference in all areas of workers endeavour.”

The St.Kitts-Nevis Trades & Labour Union and the management and staff of the Labour Spokesman extends condolences to the family members and friends of the late Joseph O’Flaherty Jr.

Hello, Archie! Meghan and Harry name son Archie Harrison

LONDON (AP) — Tired but beaming, Meghan and Prince Harry showed the public their baby son’s face for the first time on Wednesday, and also revealed his name: Archie.

The royal couple said their son, seventh in line to the British throne, is named Archibald Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor. They have not chosen a grander title for the baby, who is not a prince but could have been named a lord.

Britain’s Prince Harry and Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, during a photocall with their newborn son, in St George’s Hall at Windsor Castle, Windsor, south England, Wednesday May 8, 2019. Baby Sussex was born Monday at 5:26 a.m. (0426 GMT; 12:26 a.m. EDT) at an as-yet-undisclosed location. An overjoyed Harry said he and Meghan are “thinking” about names. The announcement came hours after the proud parents posed for cameras, helping to satisfy a huge global appetite for images and details about their newborn son.

Standing in the vast, red-carpeted St. George’s Hall at Windsor Castle, Meghan declared the baby was “a dream” and called motherhood “magic.”

Harry cradled his son in his arms as the couple posed for the cameras — the first in a lifetime of photo calls for the two-day-old baby, who is seventh in line to the British throne.

The baby lay silently, swaddled in a white merino wool shawl and wearing a matching knitted cap. Both were made by English firm G.H. Hurt & Son, which has supplied three generations of royal babies with knitwear.

Meghan declared motherhood to be “magic.”

“It’s pretty amazing,” said the 37-year-old American, formerly known as Meghan Markle. “I have the two best guys in the world, so I’m really happy.”

She said the baby — born Monday at 5:26 a.m. weighing 7 pounds, 3 ounces (3.26 kilograms) — had “just been a dream.”

“He has the sweetest temperament. He’s really calm,” she said.

Harry quipped: “I wonder who he gets that from.”

Asked who the baby took after, Harry said it was too soon to tell.

“Everyone says that babies change so much over two weeks,” said the 34-year-old prince. “We’re basically monitoring how the changing process happens over this next month really. But his looks are changing every single day, so who knows.

“We’re just so thrilled to have our own little bundle of joy,” he added.

The couple left the photo call to introduce the baby to his great-grandparents, Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip. The infant is the eighth great-grandchild of 93-year-old Elizabeth, Britain’s longest reigning monarch.

Meghan’s mother, Doria Ragland, is staying with the couple at their Frogmore Cottage home near the queen’s Windsor Castle residence.

The baby is the first Anglo-American member of the royal family, and is eligible for U.S. citizenship should his parents want it. He has African-American heritage though his biracial mother.

Family members have welcomed the new arrival with Prince William, Harry’s older brother and a father of three, joking Tuesday that he will be glad “to welcome my own brother into the sleep deprivation society that is parenting!”

“Obviously thrilled, absolutely thrilled, and obviously looking forward to seeing them in the next few days,” William told reporters.

Meghan, the former star of the TV show “Suits,” married Harry, the ex-soldier younger son of Prince Charles and Princess Diana, in May 2018. An audience of millions around the world watched the spectacular televised wedding ceremony at Windsor Castle, 20 miles (32 kilometers) west of London.

Harry is due to return to royal duties Thursday, attending an event in The Hague for the Invictus Games sports competition for injured service personnel and veterans. Harry is likely to make the jaunt to the Netherlands as a day trip so he can get back to his family in Windsor.

Assistant Coach of Cayon Jazza Buchanan said this result is a sign that Cayon’s form is improving at the right time. “We were struggling from the first round and second round. We begin to patch a lot of things that weren’t working for us. We begin to have a lot of the senior guys coming back; not as much injuries as it was before…the win tonight I think was positive for me as assistant coach and for the coach. We are OK with it, because it’s a step in winning and getting more points to secure (our place) in the (Super) Six,” Buchanan said.

Meanwhile, Saddlers Captain Junique Eddy said his players gave it their best shot, but was just unable to find a positive result. “We had an unfortunate situation in the first half where the keeper made a brilliant save and he tried to make a double save; it was a 50/50 challenge and the attacker from Cayon was able to tap it in. It was an even match,” Eddy said. “We had a lot of chances and unfortunately we were unable to put away one to get back on the score sheet and to ultimately get something out of the game,” the Saddlers captain added. Saddlers are tied on points with St. Peters for the sixth and final playoff spot but are ahead on goal difference.

Coach of Spurs, who is also a former St. Pauls coach Austin Huggins said the adjustments he made at halftime produced the right results, after both teams ended the first half 0-0. “During the first half we created a lot of opportunities. We didn’t capitalize, so at the interval we came in the dressing room and we talked about the chances that went a begging and we tried to get them more focused and to get them in the frame of mind to get the ball in the net,” Coach Huggins said.

St. Paul’s player Kendale Liburd said his teammates need to play as a team, as this is their second successive 2-0 loss in the Premier League. “I think there is some individual plays going on in the game. We were down two goals and the last 20 minutes we had some easy cross-in, easy tap in for the striker or the midfielder running in, but we have some players who are still playing selfish and we need to get them playing on one team because it’s one team, one dream…it’s a team game,” Liburd lamented.

Football action continues this week with Division 1 final four playoffs on Tuesday and F.A. Cup semi-finals on Wednesday at the Warner Park with games beginning at 5pm Tuesday and 6pm on Wednesday.

Newtown Women Win 7th straight Elvis Star Browne Title

For a record 7th straight time, the S-Krave Newtown United senior women’s team have won the Elvis Star Browne Women’s League. On Friday, the team from East Basseterre clinched their 7th hold on the title after defeating Flow 4G Cayon Rockets 2-0 in Game 2 in the finals series. The winners already defeated Cayon 7-0 earlier in the week in Game 1.

Newtown’s coach Tyrone Saddler said after going in 0-0 at halftime, he had to remind the girls to play the Newtown way and not take Cayon lightly. “I told them that we were thinking we won the championship before the game was played. So I told them we have to go out in the second half and play Newtown’s style of football. Control the ball, pass the ball and when you get our opportunity, put them away,” Coach Saddler said.

Newtown played most of the match with 10 players after their star striker Caroline Springer received a second yellow card in the 1st minute of stoppage time in the first half and then eventually nine with an injury to one of their players. But Coach Saddler said his team stood up to the challenge. “We were down to nine because two of our better players were out. One on a red card; one got injured. So we went in the second half at half time and I told them we got to be mentally tough and we have to go out there play this for Niranja and T-Mac and they listened and took heed and went out there and we played,” he added.

Coach of Cayon Tyrone Oloughlin said his team played much better in game two, but did not have enough to overcome Newtown. “It’s just that we couldn’t hold out on the last 16/17 minutes because the Newtown team is a fitter team so maybe our girls just got tired…but we did a better job defensively (than in Game 1),” he explained.

Meanwhile General Secretary of the St. Kitts and Nevis Football Association (SKNFA), Stanley Jacobs said women’s football in the Federation is developing and that this season was a success. “I believe that we had an excellent finals. It came down to two games and the eventual champions, S-Krave Newtown, congratulations to them. (Cayon) gave a good account of themselves and they too must be congratulated. I want to congratulate all the teams that participated in the Elvis Star Browne Women’s League for 2018-2019,” Jacobs said. “We continue to build the women’s game and we continue to invest in the women’s game and it can only grow from strength to strength,” he added. The SKNFA General Secretary noted that the women players are looking forward to a slew of competitions this summer including the Under 14 Women’s Challenge Series, the Concacaf U-20 Championships and the Olympic Qualifiers.

The General Secretary also noted that with the recent exploits of the Senior Women’s Team on the regional scene, the future of women’s football is bright. He noted however that while there is more work to be done, women’s football is heading in the right direction.
