Over 1170 tonnes of scrap metal already crushed at landfill

0

Over 1170 tonnes of scrap metal from derelict vehicles have been crushed and baled so far under a project by the Solid Waste Management Corporation (SWMC) and US company Enclave. Manager of the sanitary landfill in Conaree Mr. Lexington Bedford, updated staff and management of the SWMC at a General Staff meeting recently on the state of the scrap metal processing project. “We had over 1170 tonnes so far and that is from the landfill itself. Today, we have moved the (scrap metals) from where they were located initially…so we can better accommodate the incoming (derelict) vehicles,” Mr. Bedford said.

SWMC officials and the government lauded the efforts of Enclave at the start of the year, as they begun work in crushing scrap metal on the landfill. Enclave Resources established their equipment on a section on the landfill where they perform the crushing and logging processes of scrap metals and derelict vehicles. These scrap metals when baled, will be shipped off the island. Geof Folsom of Enclave Resources confirmed in January 2019 that the company has a five year contract to perform the scrap metal project.

Meanwhile, Mr. Bedford, in providing further updates on activities at the landfill, said the berm project had to be suspended due to lack of rain. He however spoke of another project which is gathering pace. “We have since installed, with the help of Sylvester (Wattley) and Yvonne (Browne. Both employees of the SWMC), some plumbing around the perimeter of the landfill so that it would serve …in case of fire, though we know that soil is primarily used on the landfill,” he disclosed. “We have some signage that was being prepared for the landfill so when you go (to dump garbage) you know where to go, so that we don’t have the confusion of persons dumping anywhere on the landfill,” the manager explained.

In November of 2018, newly appointed General Manager of the SWMC Mr. Keithley Phillip at a general staff meeting told staffers of plans to improve the working conditions and experience at the landfill.

SWMC endorses efforts of police and residents in cleaning abandoned lots

A group formed by some six police officers is working with residents of various communities to clean up abandoned lots on St. Kitts. Assistant Commissioner of Police Adolph Adams said the group was designed to mobilize residents in some of the communities on the island, to clean up unkempt lots in a bid to promote safer communities. “It’s a police and community engagement where police are going into a number of areas like McKnight, Shadwell and in the Village and we are identifying areas that are of concern to the police where persons can hide contraband in areas that are very dark and people could become prone to robberies,” ACP Adams said. “We are giving persons who reside in the community an opportunity to clean these areas and receive some sort of compensation for cleaning up the area,” Adams added. He disclosed that while he is not able to pinpoint the exact areas where this exercise is taking place, he said residents in the community together with the police have identified areas in the various communities that need cleaning.

While he was unable to disclose the amount of payments made to persons who assist with the cleanup, ACP Adams said the funds are gathered from the support of the business community. He said the residents have been very cooperative. “Persons are getting involved because after they realize what the group is doing, people are getting very involved in the activities. It is also providing an opportunity for unemployed persons in the community…that would have become deviant because they have nothing to do, (this project) is a sort of income for them and it is something to keep them occupied as well,” ACP Adams said.

Meanwhile, Marketing Supervisor at the Solid Waste Management Corporation (SWMC) Namayombo Mgonela, said the corporation endorses the efforts of this group in helping to keep communities and the environment clean. “Solid Waste certainly endorses this initiative because it certainly lines up with what we at Solid Waste believe in and that is keeping our country clean. And so for this group of officers to take it upon themselves to make a difference and work with the communities, is really something to be commended,” she said.

She added that the SWMC has been supporting the initiative by making bins available for the clean-up. “We felt that it is right for us to come on board and assist in anywhere possible,” she added. ACP Adams said the project will continue as long as necessary until completion.

Sixteen litter wardens appointed

Sixteen workers at the St. Kitts Solid Waste Management Corporation recently received notification of their appointments as litter wardens. The letters were presented by Chairman of the Board of Directors Mr. Ivan Hanley during a general staff meeting at the Corporation’s headquarters in Taylors Range. Ms. Candace Caines, Assistant General Manager of the SWMC said that the General Manager had sought the approval from the minister for 16 new persons within the corporation to be gazetted as litter wardens. “I have here in my hand a letter with your appointment. You will receive your official gazetted document very shortly, but for now you will receive this as an official notice that you are a litter warden,” she said. “It includes not just the litter wardens (but) members of management, members of the landfill staff, the security staff—it is a very important job that each of us have to do. It’s not just about going out and ticketing people, it’s giving good advice, warning people. Your job is critical as a litter warden,” Ms. Caines added.

The 16 appointments are:

Happy Mother’s Day – 2019

0

In the Words of Oliver Wendell Holmes, “Youth fades, love drops, the leaves of friendship fall, and a mother’s secret hope outlives them all.”

It’s hard to believe that another year has passed since we last celebrated Mother’s Day but, yes, and in just a few short days we will be celebrating Mother’s Day again.

It is a given fact that mothers have a tremendous amount of influence on their children, grandchildren, and others in their community, and around the globe including our very beautiful Federation of Saint Christopher (St. Kitts) and Nevis.

However, just like me, there are many others out there who were raised by their loving and caring Grandmother who played several roles, like Mother, Grandmother, Father, Grandfather, Aunt, Uncle, Friend, Defender, Leader, Doctor, Nurse, Preacher, just to name a few.

Thus, I was very fortunate to have a loving and caring Grandmother who played all of the roles mention above and then some more, and so, I dedicated the below poem in honor to her.

Happy Mother’s Day (Grandmother)

Although you have gone,

I will always sing along,

About the wonderful things,

That you have created in me,

I have missed you so much,

That all I can wish for is luck,

That hopefully one day in the future,

We will eventually be reunited forever.

Mothers are not rare to find but good mothers are. We all will agree that Mothers/Grandmothers are wise and always right. We all have grown up on the wisdom and advice of our moms, and most of this good old fashion advice, rather lessons, remain with us forever and keep guiding us through life’s turbulent rough sea.

However, simple research has clearly shown that the celebrations of mothers and motherhood can be traced back to the ancient Greeks and Romans who held festivals in honor of the mother goddesses Rhea and Cybele, but the clearest modern precedent for Mother’s Day is the early Christian festival known as ”Mothering Sunday.”

Once a major tradition in the United Kingdom (UK) and parts of Europe, This celebration fell on the fourth Sunday in Lent and was originally seen as a time when the faithful would return to their “mother’s church,” the main church in the vicinity of their home, for a special service.

Over time, the Mothering Sunday tradition shifted into a more secular holiday, and children would present their mothers with flowers and other tokens of appreciation. This custom eventually faded in popularity before merging with the American Mother’s Day. However, today Mother’s Day is celebrated in more than one hundred (100) countries around the world though at difference times in the month of May, and in some countries it is celebrated in entirely different times of the year.

What is remarkable, however, is that feelings are the same with people celebrating Mother’s Day, and this is so, because mothers are as caring and loving in the East as they are in the West.

In today’s world, let us stop and take the time to give much thanks to the hard work of two pioneering women of their times, Julia Ward Howe and Anna M. Jarvis that the day came into existence and is now internationally recognized as the day to honor all mothers and thank them for the services they impart for the benefit of their individual child and consequently to the development of mankind.

However, Julia Ward Howe will always be revered for her contributions in bestowing dignity to women and motherhood. Moreover, in her various social capacities Julia Ward Howe also work tirelessly for justice throughout her life, and fought aggressively for women’s right to vote, and struggled to liberate women from the old traditional confines of home.

Apart from the above and more, she was renowned as the author of the famous song, ‘The Battle Hymn of the Republic’ and the Mother’s Day Proclamation.

The history books have recorded and clearly show that just like Julia Ward Howe, its pages could not be completed without the input of Anna M. Jarvis who resolved in her determination to pay tribute to her mother.

However, after further research, it was revealed that at the tender age of twelve (12) Anna was present when her mother, Mrs. Jarvis said a moving prayer to conclude her lesson of the Bible that goes like this, “I hope that someone sometime will find a memorial Mother’s Day commemorating her for the matchless service she renders to humanity in every field of life. She is entitled to it. I thank so. What do you think?

The plain truth is, just like Julia Ward Howe, Anna M. Jarvis dedicated her life to fulfill her mother’s dream of the recognition of a day for honoring all mothers, and even though Anna M. Jarvis never married and never had children, she was one of the founders of the modern Mother’s Day, and she was also known as Mother of Mother’s Day, an apt title for this lady who worked tirelessly to bestow honor and dignity on all mothers globally.

Thus, traditionally people take the day as an opportunity to pay tribute to their mothers and thank them for all their love and support. In fact, in some countries even up to today, it is potentially offensive to one’s mother not to mark Mother’s Day.

Suffice it to say that after nine years (9) of the first official United States of America (USA) Mother’s Day, commercialisation of the holiday became so rampant that Anna M. Jarvis herself became a major opponent of what the holiday had become and spent all her inheritance and the rest of her life fighting what she saw as an abuse of the celebration.

It is, however, possible that the holiday would have withered over time without the support and continuous promotion of the florist industries and other commercial industries; we will never know the answer to this and other questions now being raised.

I wish a Happy Mother’s Day to all mothers’ right here in our very beautiful Federation of Saint Christopher (St. Kitts) and Nevis and by extension all over the world.

As I take my leave for today, I leave you with a Mother’s Day quote by Ann Taylor, a Mother’s Poem, a Mother’s Day Recipe, and a Mother’s Day song.

“Who ran to help me when I fell, and would some pretty story tell, or kiss the place to make it well? My Mother (Grandmother)” – Ann Taylor.

Only One Mother

Hundreds of stars in the pretty sky,

Hundreds of birds that go singing by,

Hundreds of lambs in the sunny weather,

Hundreds of dewdrops to greet the dawn,

Hundreds of bees in the purple clover,

Hundreds of butterflies on the lawn, but

Only one mother the world over.

Thank You Mom (Grandmother)

Lyrics & Music: Good Charlotte.

I’m sitting here, I’m thinking back to a time when I was young,

My memory is clear as day, I’m listening to the dishes clink,

You were downstairs; you would sing songs of praise,

And all the times we laughed with you,

And all the times that you stayed true to me,

Now we say, I said, I thank you; I’ll always thank you,

More than you could know, than I could ever show,

And I love you; I’ll always love you,

There’s nothing I won’t do to say these words to you,

That you’re beautiful forever, you were my mom,

You were my dad, the only thing I ever had was you, it’s true,

And even when the times got hard you were there,

To let us know that we’d get through, you showed me how to be a man,

You taught me how to understand the things people do,

You showered me how to love my God,

You taught me that not everyone knows the truth,

And I thank you; I’ll always thank you,

More than you could know, than I could ever show,

And I love you; I’ll always love you,

There’s nothing I won’t do to say these words to you,

That you will live forever, always in my heart.

Occupational Safety and Health

0

Workers (People), are you aware how continually week after week in the Labour Spokesman this Union educates you all about Occupational Safety and Health at the workplaces? I am wondering how many of you remember the 28th April 2019 which was the celebration o of World Day for Safety and Health. We all must remember always and reflect on the global strategy promotion and creation of preventative safety and Health by the International Labour Organisation (ILO) along with the United Nation (UN).

I say to the experts merci, gracias and grazie (These are words thank you words in foreign languages). Notably, expressions of gratitude How can I forget persons like Dr. Alan Le serve, George De peana, Sir Joseph Nathaniel France, Sir Frank Walcottt; they are my guide. Workers! The only organisation that preaches and teaches Occupational Safety and Health is the St.Kitts-Nevis Trades and Labour Union. What can I say: It treats you with dignity and respect. From my point of view, it cares for us better than we care for ourselves.

The Union’s concern extends beyond the welfare of all its members. It also shows keen interest in each individual.

Let me move by grasping principles. We need to meditate to reflect deeply on what we read also and have regular discussions with our workmates especially when we face trials or other challenging situations especially when pray in faith for wisdom and strength; the Almighty is generously ready to give freely.

Workers, before I close let me say something about discipline. While it may be painful, there is even more painful and that is the harm that may result from rejecting (to refuse) consider this example. On many occasions, I wrote asking the workers in the construction area when travelling on their vehicle to have proper seating facilities rather than sitting on the tailgate that is a hazard they are at risk likely to cause injury. What I am saying is that I am trying my very best to spare you from the needless suffering so listen to me and be disciplined and become wise. I will now leave this with you while discipline may include chastisement (to scold severely) it never abusive or cruel; it primarily relates to education.

Workers, let us set standards when we violate them just how important it is to listen to me and the St.Kitts-Nevis Trades and Labour Union Trades and Labour Union.

Workers be aware.

Thanking you.

Hold onto discipline; do not let it go; safeguard it for it means your life.-Proverbs 4 vs 13

The Union And You

0

In the words of Franklin Delano Roosevelt, “It is one of the characteristics of a free and democratic nation that it has free and independent Labour Union.”

The main primary function of the St. Kitts-Nevis Trades & Labour Union is to provide practical support to its membership in dealing with problems arising at the workplace, and by extension their homes and their communities as well.

However, to do so the leadership of the St. Kitts-Nevis Trades & Labour union will continue to:

1.   Promote the ratification and application of international Labour Standards (ILS)

2.   Continue to supply information and analyze questions related to Labour and Social issues

3.   Offer views for debate on issues of current concerns;

4.   Fight poverty and unemployment

5.   Protect working people

6.   Secure the complete organisation in the Union of all workers employed in all trades, industries, and occupations in our very beautiful Federation of Saint Christopher (St. Kitts) and Nevis;

7.   Obtain and maintain just and proper rates of wages, salaries, hours of work, holidays and other condition of Labour, and generally to protect the interest of its membership.

However, the present leaders of the St. Kitts-Nevis Trades & Labour Union  are also of the full and unconditional opinion that no worker can find the answer to his/her problem in isolation. In addition, we are also of the view that if you take the highest paid worker and the lowest paid worker, you will find that neither has enough economic power to discipline any organisation/corporation.

Therefore, our Union with the help of its membership is still willing and able to discipline organisation/corporations because we are still able to bring together the power and solidarity of the highest paid and the lowest paid worker, and all the other workers in between. That is a lesson we must never ever forget.

Nonetheless, let us now continue by looking at the Union and you, and some other reasons why a worker needs a Trade Union.

We will start by looking at strength through unity. Sometime ago we painstakingly pointed out the importance of unity in Trade Unions. In fact, that is because it is much easier to gain concession from the employer by collective bargaining through a Trade Union than by arguing for your rights as a single worker.

As time is of the utmost importance, we will have to stop here for today, but will continue in our next article when we look at the representation of workers.

As I take my leave for today, I leave you with a quote by John Paul VI, and a song recorded by Elvis Presley and written by Charles Goodman.

“The important role of Union organization must be admitted: their object is the representation of the various categories of workers, their lawful collaboration is the economic advance of society, and the development of the sense of their responsibility for the realization of the common good.” – John Paul VI.

 Who Am I

Recorded by Elvis Presley,

Written by Charles Goodman.

When I think of how He came so far from glory,

Came to dwell among the lowly such as I,

To suffer shame and such disgrace,

On Mount Calvary take my place,

Then I ask myself this question,

Who am I?

Who am I that the King would bleed and die for,

Who am I that He would pray not my will Thy lord?

The answer I may never know,

Why He ever loved me so,

But to that old rugged cross He’d go,

For who am I.

When I’m reminded of His words I’ll leave Him never,

If you’ll be true I’ll give to you life forever,

Oh I wonder what I could have done,

To deserve God’s only Son,

To fight my battles until they’re won,

For who am I.

Repeat #2.

But to that old rugged cross He’d go,

For who am I.

Well-known Personalities Participate In Labour Day March

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts (Friday 10th May 2019)- For yet another year, thousands of people, both old and young alike, took to the streets of Basseterre on Labour Day March (International Workers’ Day) on Monday 6th May, put on by the St. Kitts-Nevis Trades & Labour Union (SKNT&LU) in partnership with its sister organisation the opposition St.Kitts-Nevis Labour Party (SKNLP).

With their outfits and displays, Curtis Crooke and Bougna were two well-known personalities at the march who had the attention of many spectators and their fellow marchers.

Curtis Crooke (Right) and Bougna during this year’s Labour Day march (Spokesman Snap)

In speaking with this media house, they had this to say:

Curtis Crooke

“People are showing their colours. This march could have been even bigger but…people are still afraid to come out because we see what’s going on with dictator Harris. You see people standing on the side in their plain red so that says something that people do not have on their actual Labour slogan shirt but they are wearing their red so you could see that it says something. This time around, I am marching for a special reason; it’s for the workers and I’m a worker. My situation at the airport you see… my ID was pulled with immediate effect and I’m a worker who’s representing the workers of this country. I couldn’t go to the Labour Department because we know what goes on at the Labour Department. It’s not fair that poor people have to always go to the court. What if you don’t have the money?, and so these are the reasons why we have to march for what our forefathers went through such as the Buckley’s Riot and we could go on and on so we have to march, we have to stand up. Some pope say it is a political march and the question must be asked ‘How did this become a political march?, How did this march come about? What is the reason? Who was oppressing who? Why the St.Kitts-Nevis Trades & Labour Union. People must talk the history and tell the truth about the march. The march is for everybody so why PAM keep segregating themselves.”

Bougna

“My stuffed animal display dressed in different colours is representing Timothy showing heself with all kind of parties. First he was Labour and then he is PLP and then PAM and now CCM and Unity so this shows that he is really uncertain of who he really is and I is de doctor for him; ah pushing him in he wheelchair. De wheel chair is just he transportation”

Labour Day is a worldwide observed holiday which highlights the economic and social accomplishment of the working- class people.

There continues to be ongoing public debate that the Labour Day march has turned into a political one according to some critics while SKNLP supporters give a rebuttal of their position that the social and economic progress of workers is credited to the party, the sister organisation of the St. Kitts-Nevis Trades and Labour Union.

Marchers wore most people wore red Labour Party T-shirts and other red clothing items – red being the affiliated colour of the Labour Party.

Many partakers carried placards with messages such as ‘We want a new school but  NOT on our aquifer’, ‘Thank You Leon Natta For Fighting For Civil Servants’, ‘Scandal Under Scandal Under this government’, ‘Where is My $500?’ and ‘Ready To Rebuild…Labour 2020’.

That morning, the march kicked off from the Patsy Allers play field with a procession of pom-pom girls moving along some of the traditional routes onto including Cayon Street, Central Street, Fort Street and Bank Street, and climaxed at its starting point where a rally was held.

On the road entertainment included Real Right Entertainment and the Kollision Band.

SKNLP officials present were Party Leader and Prime Minister Dr. Denzil L. Douglas, Parliamentary Representative for Constituency Six; Deputy Leader and Parliamentary Representative for Constituency Two Marcella Liburd;  Parliamentary Representative For Constituency Three Konris Maynard; Dr. Geoffrey Hanley of Constituency One; Steve Wrensford of Constituency Four; Kenneth ‘Kenny’ Douglas of Constituency Five; Leon Natta-Nelson of Constituency Seven and Dr. Terrance Drew of Constituency Eight.

Among the SKNT&LU executive officials were First-Vice President Sydney Bridgewater and Staff Representative and immediate former Assistant General Secretary Mitchel Slader.

On the eve of this week’s march (Sunday), the traditional wreath laying ceremony was held which saw visits to the gravesites of fallen stalwarts of the Labour movement such as Clarence Fitzroy Bryant, Joseph N. France, Sir Lee Llewellyn Moore, Robert Llewellyn Bradshaw and Fidel O’ Flaherty.
