As the SKNFA National Bank Premier League 2018-2019 season wounds down towards the Super Six playoffs, four teams picked up crucial wins on the weekend. On Sunday night at the Warner Park defending champions Rams Village Superstars fended off Atiba Harris St. Peters 2-0.

Coach Stephen Clarke of Village said he had to make some adjustments in the second half as his players were making too many errors in the first half.

Assistant Coach of Cayon Jazza Buchanan said this result is a sign that Cayon’s form is improving at the right time. “We were struggling from the first round and second round. We begin to patch a lot of things that weren’t working for us. We begin to have a lot of the senior guys coming back; not as much injuries as it was before…the win tonight I think was positive for me as assistant coach and for the coach. We are OK with it, because it’s a step in winning and getting more points to secure (our place) in the (Super) Six,” Buchanan said.

Meanwhile, Saddlers Captain Junique Eddy said his players gave it their best shot, but was just unable to find a positive result. “We had an unfortunate situation in the first half where the keeper made a brilliant save and he tried to make a double save; it was a 50/50 challenge and the attacker from Cayon was able to tap it in. It was an even match,” Eddy said. “We had a lot of chances and unfortunately we were unable to put away one to get back on the score sheet and to ultimately get something out of the game,” the Saddlers captain added. Saddlers are tied on points with St. Peters for the sixth and final playoff spot but are ahead on goal difference.

Coach of Spurs, who is also a former St. Pauls coach Austin Huggins said the adjustments he made at halftime produced the right results, after both teams ended the first half 0-0. “During the first half we created a lot of opportunities. We didn’t capitalize, so at the interval we came in the dressing room and we talked about the chances that went a begging and we tried to get them more focused and to get them in the frame of mind to get the ball in the net,” Coach Huggins said.

St. Paul’s player Kendale Liburd said his teammates need to play as a team, as this is their second successive 2-0 loss in the Premier League. “I think there is some individual plays going on in the game. We were down two goals and the last 20 minutes we had some easy cross-in, easy tap in for the striker or the midfielder running in, but we have some players who are still playing selfish and we need to get them playing on one team because it’s one team, one dream…it’s a team game,” Liburd lamented.

Football action continues this week with Division 1 final four playoffs on Tuesday and F.A. Cup semi-finals on Wednesday at the Warner Park with games beginning at 5pm Tuesday and 6pm on Wednesday.
