It is said that every day is a gift. To those of you reading this piece, many of us, despite whatever challenges there may be in our lives, are grateful that today is another that we have the breath of life. On the flip side, there are some of us who are dealing with bereavement in our livesa loved one, a colleague, a friend or just someone we may have known as a public figure or just a decent human being whose passing has saddened us at the core of our souls .
Those who are described to be the dearly departed; whether recently, not too many years ago or years ago. We weep because they have left this earthly home, and for those of us who are comforted by our spiritual and religious values, we have faith that one day we shall reunite with the dearly departed.
Even with Mother’s Day (14th May) approaching, there are some individuals who would be celebrating the cherished memories of mothers and mother-figures. The issue of crime and violence is another topic and concern as young men are caught up in the fatal affair of taking lives and causing injuries to each other.
There needs to be more love in the communities and respect for self and others. No matter the circumstances, we always feel a void in our hearts when loved ones depart, and while there is the popular saying that time heals all pain, the question can be asked: Is there really a timeline for our emotions?
We may mourn in a bittersweet way knowing that he or she is no longer suffering from whatever sickness or just knowing that the time came for this part of life at a particular age. We cherish the memories and/or legacies that they have left with us.
The life that many of them led
were exemplary and inspirational, and often at times they went about their lives in such humble ways that if we were not privy to information about them before they left this earth, we soon discover the amazing personalities and positive impact he or she would have had on their family, community or the nation. At times when we attend funeral/ thanksgiving for life services, and often messages and lessons are relayed about the importance of living a life that is pleasing to the Almighty and just in general to live peaceable among ourselves.
Showing love and kindness is always encouraged. It is in moments like these that cause many of us to think deeply about life, and to be more precise, our own lives. But, we must not wait until such circumstances but rather we should be focused on making the best of life each day.

Today, he will be laid to rest in full military honours, quite deservedly so. More details about his life and times to be highlighted in next week’s edition.
