As Lent begins we recall how Jesus taught us to behave in our various forms of worship. He taught us to refrain from making a show of our good deeds, trying to attract the attention of others. Indeed, he pointed out that by doing so we would loose all rewards from our Heavenly Father.
He further admonished that when one of our hands extend alms the other should NOT know what the first is doing. Our almsgiving should always be in secret, and our Father who sees all that is done in secret will reward us accordingly.
Jesus also warned us to refrain making a show of praying. He admonished us not to imitate the hypocrites who love to make a show of praying publicly. Rather, we should go to our private rooms, close the doors, and then pray to our Heavenly Father who is in those places.
In other words, at the heart of you prayers should always be our love for God and His Son who made the ultimate sacrifice to save all of mankind. At the beginning of Lent Jesus teaches us how to conduct ourselves in praying, fasting, and almsgiving.
Thus the three pillars of Lent strengthen our faith and lead us to eternal life.
