This month of June marks the annual observance of Child Month here in St. Kitts and Nevis. Special attention of course will be dedicated to our little ones who fit in the category of the early childhood years as their talents, creativity and skills are showcased and enhanced for us as a nation and people to show appreciation and give support to the future generations.
This year’s theme for 38th Child Month 2023 is ‘Empowering Our Children Through STEAM’ which stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts and Mathematics. Many parents can easily and quickly say which field their child is currently a star and so the potential of a sound future looks very bright in this regard.
However, it is very important that parents and guardians provide the necessary support and love that is critically needed in early childhood development. Parents, teachers and the community have a role in the upbringing of the nation’s children and this is the type of social responsibility which should come naturally and automatic if we genuinely care about our children.
The basic needs of our children must be provided-food, clothing and shelter but let us not forget the love and support. ‘The village raising the child’ can be strengthened overtime and be reintroduced as a way of life once again, spearheaded by our commitment and determination to see this through as a society, a people…a nation. Too often many parents and guardians seem to be caught up in the materialistic side of things but that focus must be shifted on caring for the physical and emotional well-being of these little human beings who are looking to us as adults to guide them along life’s path.
Child Month here in St. Kitts-Nevis runs from 1st to 30th June each year, but the investment we make in our children lasts a lifetime.
