BASSETERRE, St. Kitts (Thursday 16th February 2023)- Parliamentary Representative for Constituency Two (Central Basseterre) Marsha Henderson is admonishing residents of the community that “Violence is never the answer.” Her sentiments were expressed in a statement on Thursday 16th February 2023 in relation to the crime situation stemming from the deadly shooting at the Irish Town Primary School.
“It is with a heavy heart and deep regrets that our Central Basseterre community is currently experiencing a surge in criminal activities that must be addressed today,” she commented during her opening statement. In giving the update that the Irish Town Primary School remains closed until further notice, she revealed that such is “Due to the current criminalities that floored the Central Basseterre community.” Henderson expressed her deepest condolences to “the families and friends who have lost loved ones during the current unfortunate influx of crime in our community.” The Central Basseterre parliamentary representative further shared: “I empathize with the indescribable pain caused as we mourn as a Kittitian community for our brothers and our sister who we have lost.
One is just too many. As a community, it is imperative that we become affirmed custodians of our brothers and sisters. Violence is never the answer.” According to her: “Choosing violence depletes the very essence of who we are as a community.
Today we are reaping the seeds of broken families , destructive socialization and peer affiliations that encourage crime. We must not bolster the criminals by staying silent. Let us protect our Central Basseterre community by speaking up, by nurturing the youths and simply recognising that violence not only destroys the lives of its victims but also of its assailants.” On Wednesday 1st February, 30-year-old Sylvester Crossley of Mc Knight but who resided at Half Way Tree was killed following a shooting incident which took place at Uncle T’s fast food restaurant located on Cayon Street.
A police statement issued on Thursday 2nd February, revealed that a fatal shooting incident occurred at about 9 p.m. Investigations so far have revealed that he went into a business establishment and, while waiting, he was accosted by a lone, masked gunman who shot him several times about the body then fled the scene.
The District Medical Officer pronounced Crossley dead and the crime scene was processed by personnel from the Forensic Services Unit. 29-year-old Dequan Maloney of Mc Knight but who resided at Bird Rock of the East Basseterre community was a recent homicide victim also following a shooting incident on Thursday 26th January, in the community he was residing. Police say investigations so far have revealed that sometime between 10 p.m. and 11 p.m., and that multiple explosive sounds were heard in the Morne Heights area where he resided, however, nothing was reported to the police.
Local authorities reported further that close to 5 a.m. on Friday, January 27, a report was made to the Police of a body being found in that area. Officers responded and, upon arrival, Maloney’s lifeless body was found inside the trunk of a motorcar with what appeared to be gunshot wounds about the body.
