Anyone who is surprised to find out that Unity was finding creative ways to give their families and supporters in the inner circle millions of dollars for nothing, doesn’t understand the mindset of those who were at the helm of the government. Douglas knew and understood Timothy.
That is why so much time, effort and money had to be spent on attacking Dr Douglas, so that Timothy could be seen as a viable alternative. But because a leopard can’t change its spots, it didn’t take long for the warning given about Timothy by his nephew to define him.
The politician that typified Unity is the kind that pillaged and plundered many African nations, many Caribbean islands and many South American countries. They had one objective after getting into power. That was getting wealthy by any means.
Their modus operandi is the same. Give the people the crumbs while they enrich themselves, their families and inner circles through all sorts of overinflated projects. For a while the people are satisfied with the crumbs.
But only for a while. And that is why Unity, which sounded so perfect, didn’t even last two terms. If the politicians in Unity had been honest and had the best interest of the federation at heart, the Timothy Harris led government would have lasted one year.
They would have abandoned the government when they realized how much racketeering and corruption were taking place. But all of them went down Church Street and saw how they could milk this cash cow. They set up companies.
Their close family members and friends set up companies. They sold ice. They rented tents. They sold water. They rented out heavy equipment. They sold passports. They sold cement and concrete. They set up construction companies and built huts and prisons and condos.
Now among the noveau riche, they no longer had to buy shoes nor watches. They no longer had to buy anything. The Treasury paid their way. That is why now we are hearing that there are no surpluses after surpluses after surpluses.
We are learning that the country is actually in the red. We are being told that a particular bank had to be rescued from certain collapse for how it was being used as a cash cow. Again, no surprise there. We remember how senior people in the ministry of finance threatened to resign if a certain finance minister was not moved.
This was before 2015. This person wanted to boast about all these surpluses so that bills were not paid or were not paid on time. So we can only imagine the financial gymnastics and maneuvering that went on for seven years in the Treasury, the Development Bank, National Bank and Social Security.
That is why annual reports became non-existent and certain directors have fled the country. That is why I am happy to hear that the Integrity in Public Life Act will become a reality before year end. We must keep politicians and others in high places accountable to us who gave them a job.
We want our beloved Labour Party to be in power for a long time so we have to keep their feet to the fire. If they are still not answering our calls or messages, they have to find a way to do so. I know that this is the first time in government for the majority of them but by now they should have devised a way in which to respond when their constituents contact them.
We know that whenever real progress happens in the federation, it is because the real Labour Party is in government. That is why I might grumble but I am sticking with my Labour. * way.
