The Labour Spokesman Editorial
At present, a new type of virus has once again triggered anxiety and fear among many people, with some wondering whether the world could be heading back toward another era of lockdowns similar to the days of COVID-19. Reports surrounding Hantavirus, reportedly emerging from aboard the MV Hondius cruise ship and linked to disease spread from rodents, have understandably caused concern regionally and internationally. For many, the mere mention of another virus is enough to reopen emotional wounds left behind by the COVID pandemic.
What exactly is Hantavirus? According to local Chief Medical Officer Dr. Hazel Laws, it is a zoonotic virus — one that normally infects animals but has the potential to spread to humans through the animal’s urine, droppings and saliva. In this case, Hantavirus is commonly associated with wild rodents such as rats and mice. At the same time, while caution is necessary, fear mongering is not. Shame on those locally who used the initial information involving a citizen reportedly aboard the vessel to spread panic, alarm and speculation. Thankfully, local health authorities have indicated that the virus is not prevalent within the Federation. The reality is that viruses and health threats will continue to emerge in different forms across the world. What matters most is how societies respond. Panic solves nothing. Education, vigilance and responsible behaviour do. Let us remain alert but not consumed by fear. Let us choose facts over frenzy, awareness over alarmism and cleanliness over complacency.
