Your Vote Counts And Every Vote Matters: The Compton Lesson For St. Kitts-Nevis

The Labour Spokesman Editorial

In June 2021, municipal elections were held for The City of Compton in California, USA. The seat for the Council’s Second District was contested by Isaac Galvan and Andre Spicer. Galvan had been declared the winner by one vote, 855 to 854. Spicer eventually took the matter to court. Last August, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office arrested Galvan along with five others, charging them with conspiracy to commit election fraud and one count of bribery with intent to influence an election. The other four had been specifically accused of registering to vote and casting votes in Compton even though they lived outside the city.

Last Friday, the Los Angeles Superior Court found that four of the votes for Galvan were illegal, having been cast by persons who didn’t live in the council district. Judge Michelle Williams directed that Galvan be removed and Andre Spicer be installed. Spicer pointed out that there had been rumours of voter fraud and schemes for years in Compton: “I think this helps to get us engaged again. It’s just a relief for the entire city to expose it, and hopefully, rid ourselves of it.” We of The Labour Spokesman are bringing this matter to the attention of ALL the people of St Kitts and Nevis, especially as it evokes memories of the 2015 general elections when one seat was ‘lost’ by a mere four (4) votes — and not only was that one seat lost, so was the whole government.

We also feel constrained to warn you that there may well be a desire on the part of the naked emperor to put off calling the elections. For so doing he may use his goons to stir up trouble, have a state of emergency declared, and use that as an excuse to postpone the elections for as long as possible. We should not play into his hands. In order to take back our country and restore it to some semblance of normalcy, we have to fight long and hard and all the way. Dear comrades, friends and supporters all: YOUR VOTE COUNTS, AND EVERY VOTE MATTERS!
