LETTER TO THE EDITOR — Upper College Street, Basseterre, St. Kitts, 5th April 2022

Dear Madam Editor, not too long ago I received a container of foodstuff and other items sent for me by a relative who lives in St Croix. When I went to the customs, I found that my container had already been opened, and there was a notice stuck to it saying that it had already been inspected by customs. I am not sure if items were missing, and when I complained to the officer, I was told that they could not do anything about it. When I complained some more, I was told that US customs opens people’s baggage behind their backs when they are travelling, and that we do not complain about it, so what am I complaining about?

If this is government policy the people of St Kitts need to do something about it, for it gives the customs officers a licence to steal, and this is very hard on our people who have to depend on relatives and friends to help us out at these hard times. Thanks very much, Madam Editor, for allowing me to bring this serious matter to the attention of the general public. Yours sincerely, A Truly Concerned Citizen (Name withheld by request).
