Living in a world which focuses on looks and the essence of striving for perfection of flawless beauty, it is quite important for individuals to appreciate and understand and reflect on the essence of diversity in beauty which is more than skin deep. Among the many life lessons can include an invaluable one on the topic of compassion and acceptance as it relates to individuals born with Down syndrome and other genetic conditions.
It goes without saying that a true test of humanity boils down to how we treat each other and by extension our attitude towards individuals who look different based on how they were born. World Down syndrome has been celebrated on 21st March each year since 2012.
According to www. worlddownsyndromeday. org, Down syndrome (or Trisomy 21) is a condition in which a person has an extra chromosome. As explained further, Chromosomes are “packages” of genes in the body. They determine how a baby’s body forms and functions as it grows.
It can be firmly stated that showing compassion, love and acceptance towards persons with Down syndrome is more than an act of kindness, it reflects our togetherness in humanity as a people. In general, when it comes to physical appearances, the topic of bullying in schools remains a serious and troubling issue because all around the globe many children get teased for about certain genetic conditions, body weight and other areas that some impolite and disrespectful persons-including adultsthink it best to make a mocking spotlight of. Many of us have heard stories about
negative impact of bullying while on the flipside we have all heard about the triumphs that many individuals have made in reverse of using the negativity thrown at them to push to success and positivity in their lives, and even using such as a story of triumph in hopes of inspiring others. We owe it to ourselves as a people to celebrate the uniqueness of each individual in recognition of the fact that our differences offer a blend of talents, artistic abilities and intellectual capacities, including individuals with Down syndrome of course.
