BASSETERRE, St. Kitts (Thursday 27th January 2022) — Around the world, males are dying of COVID-19 more than females. Speaking at the COVID-19 briefing on Wednesday 26th January 2022, Chief Medical Officer Dr. Hazel Laws explained that scientists are currently looking into the global trend. Pointing to the COVID-19 details relating to St. Kitts-Nevis, she stated: “In terms of gender breakdown, two thirds of the cases were male and one third female, and this is in keeping with global international trend where the males tend to die more so of COVID-19 versus females.”
“Within three days we’ve had five COVID-19 related deaths. So between Sunday 23rd to Tuesday 25th of this week, we’ve had five persons dying of COVID-19. These individuals were older adults with underlying chronic conditions and they were all unvaccinated,” CMO Laws said. The five deaths between Sunday and Tuesday brought the total from 28 to 33 during January 2022, of which 27 are in St. Kitts and 6 in Nevis.
Dr. Laws noted: “Twenty-nine, or 88% of the deaths were unvaccinated and the deaths were mainly older adults between the ages of 40 to 60 plus. So again gender, your vaccination status, age and the presence of underlying chronic conditions place you at risk for severe COVID, hospitalization and even death. We want to reach out to those individuals who are unvaccinated, especially the adults with underlying chronic conditions — we are pleading with you to come onboard and give yourself that additional layer of protection.” As of the briefing, 5,331 cases of COVID-19 have been recorded with 792 in Nevis and 4,536 in St. Kitts, with 4,745 having recovered and 553 active cases being monitored.
