Tributes to His Honour, Mr. Eustace John, CMG, and Mrs. Telca Sybil Francis

By Sir Hugh and Lady Claudette Rawlins

The passing of relatives, including George Washington Archibald, and of close personal and family friends, in the recent past has given us reflective pause. In the course of a week, four such lives were celebrated. The lives of two of our dear friends, His Honour Mr. Eustace John and Mrs. Telca Francis were celebrated in St. Kitts and Nevis. They both leave indelible footprints in the sands of time and bid us to plant ours therein or to emulate their endeavours to create our own.

Mrs. Francis was an incredibly energetic and focused business-woman who never really retired. She was generous with her store, time, advice, experience and ideas. We here express gratitude for the fellowship and sage advice which she shared with us on many occasions, as well as for her friendship and loving kindness over the years. Claudette particularly enjoyed the tours of her gardens and the invaluable horticultural commentaries. Her passing leaves a void in our hearts and we will miss her dearly. However, we shall cherish the fond memories. We can only imagine what her passing means to Mr. Ben Francis (husband) and Reg (Son-Regiwell Francis). We pray that they will be strengthened and comforted by the eternal God as they mourn and that the pain of their loss will recede with time to be replaced by the memories of their shared life experiences and of her outstanding service.

His Honour Mr. John (or Sir John as he was affectionately known by everyone in his formative years) was a consummate and outstanding public servant during his sixty years of service. It may be recalled that he was sworn in as Deputy Governor-General some twenty-three years ago at the High Court in Basseterre in a dignified ceremony presided over by the Hon. Justice Velma Hylton. He retired but three months prior to his passing. His knowledge and understanding of every aspect of the public service were phenomenal and he shared it generously with anyone who sought his advice, as well as with others whom he thought needed the benefit of it.

Although Sir John was Hugh’s senior by some years (but almost shared birthdates) they became friends from very early years as they grew up in Gingerland. Even as a youngster Sir John’s stature was imposing and his presence was larger than life. Yet, he had a gentle, kindly and endearing personality, which drew people to him. His presence as well as his distinctive voice and talent made him an outstanding actor from his school years. He later became a renowned dramatist and founded the St. Kitts Dramatic Society. He produced plays particularly during the various summer festivals, including the annual Arts Festivals which were sponsored by Deputy Chief Minister/Premier, the Hon. C.A. Paul Southwell, as he then was. Those who featured in his productions included Cromwell Bowry, Walter Simmonds, Claudina Bagnall and Theodora Archibald, as they then were, Agnes Farrell, Leroy Nelson, Andrea Bowry and Dalia Warner, whom he subsequently wed. He was a dramatist par excellence.

By a stroke of fortune, when in 1968 a schoolboy Hugh worked during the summer at the Basseterre Post Office Sir John was a senior Officer there. Sir John casted him in that summer’s production and continued thereafter to encourage his forays into the dramatic arts. Incidentally, during the year before Sir John had won the Statehood Playwriting Competition in which Mr. Howard Byron placed second and Hugh third. Hugh realized that notwithstanding his kindly nature, Sir John brought a seriousness of purpose and firmness to his endeavour. He recalls that when during an early practice session it became obvious that he did not know his lines, Sir John calmly said “OK, take your exit now and let the practice session continue”. Hugh was duly chastised and never repeated that error again. He had occasion to joke about it with Mrs. John when they were teachers at the Sandy Point High School during the 1970s.

It was Sir John’s distinctive voice and his acquired knowledge of broadcasting that thrusted him into the vanguard, which, with the seeds planted by Karney Osbourne, Sylvester Joseph and others, saw ZIZ radio and television become a daily staple particularly for the people of the Colony, Associated State and Federation.

We are eternally thankful for the bonds of friendship which we both shared with His Honour and Mrs. John and the times we spent together. Notwithstanding their obvious health issues, at their insistence Hugh spent almost the entire day 17 April 2017 with them. The uplifting conversations and fellowship then and in past times which were shared by both of us will ever be etched in our memories. So too will our visits with the Francis family.

Our hope is that his Honour’s sterling services, both social and in the various public offices, and Mrs. Francis’ untiring business and social endeavours have been or will be chronicled for posterity and to guide others. We also hope that the stability of His Honour’s years as Deputy Governor-General has been noted and will be fittingly honoured. May Mrs. John, as well as His Honour’s progeny and relatives draw solace from the endeavours and achievements of his illustrious life.

As His Honour and Mrs. Francis have departed this mortal realm and have been transformed to immortality, may God grant them peace and rest eternal and let His light perpetual shine upon them.

Stewart Saunders Meets Media

BASSETERRE, St.Kitts-
Members of the local media on Wednesday 16th August 2017 met with the newly-appointed National Security Advisor Major General Stewart Saunders at the Ministry of National Security located on Liverpool Rowe in Basseterre.

More than six reporters attended that session hosted by Saunders of Jamaica who is two weeks into his post.

As gathered, he is expected to serve in that contract position for a period of two years.

Some of the topics covered in the meeting included what changes he intends to bring to the security forces, a general analysis of the crime situation and of course the controversial May 2010 deadly Tivoli Gardens operation in Jamaica involving military and police forces aimed at capturing popular drug lord and Shower Posse leader Christopher ‘Dudus’ Coke, a subject raised by this reporter along with another media colleague.

Following the meeting which went on for over an hour, Saunders had this to say:

“I think we had a wonderful discussion and at least we know more about each other and what our responsibilities are. So far I have met with a number of stakeholders, the Criminal Justice Strategic Board, the police force, the military, Her Majesty’s Prisons, the Chamber of (Industry and) Commerce and a number of individuals and I sincerely hope that at the end of the day we’ll have a proper understanding as to how we are all going to move forward in consulting unity to make sure that St.Kitts-Nevis is a better society to live in the very near future.”

He also talked about the purpose of meeting with members of the press that day.

“The purpose of this meeting right now is for me to learn from you who are part and parcel of the stakeholders groups and for you to learn more about me and what I’m capable of offering to address the issues that are confronting us at this particular moment in time.”

Asked what changes he hopes to bring in fighting crime, Saunders responded: “I am simply hoping to ensure that we bring a more unified approach to addressing the crime problem so that all of our resources can be brought to bear in order to solve the issues and concern that are and obviously that entails ensuring that entities that are involved exhibit far more professionalism, are far better equipped and resourced etc. in order to deal with the issues that confront us.”

Additionally, when questioned about what is the most pressing issue in regard to the crime fight in St.Kitts-Nevis, he pointed to the reduction of homicides.

“The most pressing need right now is to reduce the number of homicides that happening in society and so far thing have been trending in the right direction.”

According to Saunders: “When compared to the size of the population and the fact that everyone that I have met with shares the concern but everyone also feels that at this particular moment in time, we are trending in the right direction and they have been helpful; extremely helpful in putting their services forward as far as the fight against crime is concerned.”

PACking Dishonesty On The TUG Boat

By: Thinking Citizen

I listened the other day to Senator Nigel Carty’s contribution in the National Assembly to the debate on the amendment to the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) Bill. Senator Carty was brilliant, relevant and no less so was Dr. Denzil Douglas as they both exposed for the world wide world to see the hypocrisy, ambivalence, wickedness and bad-mindedness of the members of the Team Unity Government.

Team Unity’s wicked and evil governing strategy consists of two stages. First, Team Unity does a load of wicked and evil and selfish deeds and when those deeds become public and are debated on the streets, Team Unity sends out its corps of Spin-doctors, Liars and Propagandists to convey the false and erroneous message that everything is fine for the Team Unity Government is Open, Transparent, Accountable, Honest, Decent and Upright.

The worst Spin-doctor in Team Unity is the leader of Team Unity. When he tries to spin, it makes him look stupid and childish. He is much better off sticking to his Accounting and to the usual practice of telling lies.

Nobody on the Government side responded fittingly to the arguments put forward by the Senator Carty and the former Prime Minister Dr. Denzil Douglas. For the most part, the arguments or rather the non-arguments put forward by the Government side in its defence consisted of the recitation of a list of perceived financial regularities committed by the by the Douglas Administration. It was rather like “Good morning Peter” “Cabbage, Ma’am”.

During the entire debate in the House, the members on the Government side chose to lap their tails at the very valid, relevant and forceful points made by Senator Carty and our former prime Minister. The members on the Government side raised two basic points in their defence namely (I) That the Labour Government headed by Dr. Douglas, for some 19 or 20 years provided no funding for the Public Accounts (the PAC) and (II) Since the PAC was dormant and did not function during that long period when the Labour Party members in the House are devoid of any moral authority to make recommendation concerning the scope and function of the Public Accounts Committee under consideration.

Team Unity argues that the absence or the lack of any specific provision in the National Budget in respect of the PAC prevented its operation or prevented it from exercising its proper functions, duties and responsibilities.

I remember at least two (2) persons, the Hon. Joseph N. France and the Hon. Frederick Parris who were sitting members of the PAC during the 1970s although no specific provision for funding had been included in the Estimates or the National Budget. Something is certainly wrong with this argument presented by Team Unity.

The second point, the one raised by Team Unity about the lack of any moral authority to speak on the part of the members of the Labour Party is clearly a big joke.

If I have been a silent witness to four (4) different murders and have said nothing to the Police or to the family of the murdered person, that does not mean that because I said nothing or did nothing I have the moral authority to say what I see or know in the case of any murder or murders in the future.

The motive of the Labour Party opposition in the House is to make the PAC a much wider operating Committee. The members of Government were concerned with restricting the scope and functions of the PAC as much as possible.

The Government of nine blind mice is clearly living in the distant past.

So Much Mismanagement Under This Government.

By: Thinking Citizen

A certain government created and historic and most disturbing situation. That government created a situation in which there were both a Governor-General and an Acting Governor-General sitting in office at the same time. That Government was the Team Unity Government.

The most disgusting aspect of the whole sordid affair was the fact that Team Unity tried to pin the blame for its own incompetence on Her Majesty the Queen. But Team Unity was simply wasting its time for Her Majesty was neither for Attorney General nor Prime Minister in St.Kitts-Nevis.

The same Team Unity Government allowed an overseas investor to fund a project for Steam Cell Research at the JNF General Hospital in St.Kitts.

However, soon afterwards when news of the Research Project leaked out CMO Dr. Patrick Martin went to the hospital and shut down the Project.

There was lots of talk in St.Kitts concerning what had been happening at the Hospital. The Senior Minister in the Ministry of Health confirmed that Stem Cell Research had indeed been carried out at the Hospital but a few days later, the Junior Minister in the same Ministry of Health went on the radio and contradicted the Senior Minister of Health by saying that no Stem Cell Research had ever been carried out at the Hospital.

From Health we go to Education. The old Basseterre High School on Victoria Road has been shut down and abandoned by Team Unity. It was shut down for narrow political reasons and not for any valid health reasons.

In order to justify its action, Team Unity is claiming that a Team of Experts from NIOSH in Washington D.C had recommended that the Basseterre High School was contaminated beyond measure and was no longer safe to be used as a school.

Others have been saying that three teams of experts from overseas including NIOSH had studied the problem at the School and none of the teams had recommend that the School be abandoned.

Government has never been to publish the NIOSH Report in the local newspapers or make copies for distribution to local organisations or businesses. Clearly something is wrong. If government had been interpreting the NIOSH Report correctly then the Government should not have been afraid to make the Report public for all interested persons to see and read.

Certain persons in St.Kitts and Nevis who have been trained in health and related fields have remarked that the Government is willfully misinterpreting the NIOSH Report and that is why Government is afraid to make the Report available for public scrutiny.

The Government is hell-bent on putting down the new Basseterre High School on the Basseterre Valley Aquifer. The Government’s advisors have acknowledged that there are certain risks involved in putting down the building on that site but they say that certain safe-guards can be built into the system that can mitigate the risks or protect the water in the Aquifer from becoming contaminated completely.

Other experts disagree with that assessment of the situation and cite the case of other countries in the world where such safeguards have been used and were not able to provide the level of protection desired or required.

It is the opinion of close political observers that the Team Unity Government not only indulges in lies but supports public officials who tell lies as well.

Mr. Junie Hodge, the current superintendent of Prisons announced that he conducted a one-month prison lock-down shortly after his appointments as Superintendent.

As a result of that lock-down, the Superintendent said numerous contraband items were found in the cells of prisoners in jail. The contraband items were put on public display.

The immediate former Prison Superintendent responded to that announcement by stating that what the present Superintendent was saying was not true as he himself had collected the very same items when he was serving as Superintendent and had put the items into a safe and secure container in a secure office,.

In spite of the correction that was made by the former Superintendent of Prisons, the Prime Minister made no attempt to have Mr. Junie Hodge withdraw his false and erroneous report.

In every country in the world people expect their Government to be Honest, Decent, Truthful and Upright. Our people in the Federation of St.Kitts and Nevis expect our Government to be no different. However, our Government short-changes us not by being Honest, Decent, Truthful and Upright but by simply announcing that it is committed to all those virtues and values.

BHS: Risking It To Fulfill An Election Promise?

By: Spokesman Newsroom

BASSETERRE, St.Kitts – In making his presentation on the Basseterre High School (BHS) in Parliament on Thursday 10th August, the Minister of Public Infrastructure, Ian ‘Patches’ Liburd, referred to page 41 of Team Unity’s manifesto leading up to January 2015 General Elections.

Liburd is the Parliamentary Representative of the Constituency One (East Basseterre) where the proposed land for the new BHS is located at Pond’s Estate. He is also a member of the PAM (People’s Action Movement) party.

The site chosen to build the new BHS located near the aquifer continues to be at the center of public controversy because it is seen as a major contamination threat to the nation’s water supply.

The identified section of Team Unity’s manifesto, Liburd said, “spoke to a new Basseterre High School for the people in this country”.

He also expressed during his speech that “We temporarily housed students and committed to building a brand new high school…”

The temporary school campus, built at Taylors Range, ran the government a cost of 5 million dollars while the construction of the new school is estimated a 40 million price tag.

Liburd, during his House of Assembly remarks talked about the suspected BHS health contamination issue as being a matter that was put to voters in seeking their support.

“…We recognised that this was an emergency as there existed a threat to public health; a threat to our welfare and safety of students and teachers and auxiliary workers. We recognised that Mr. Speaker and this we also recognised and the nation recognised then we took it to the people on our campaign that this was an emergency situation and they felt best, that if Labour (Party) failed for three and a half years, give us a chance and we will fix it within our term and that is what we are doing Mr. Speaker.”

In the lead up to the General Elections, that health contamination issue played out as a hot topic between the now opposition Labour Party and the present administration.

The Opposition has lashed out at the government for playing politics with the BHS including its rejection of the reports from three top overseas health agencies namely the Caribbean Public Health agency (CARPHA), the Caribbean Industrial Research Institute (CARIRI) both based in Trinidad and more so the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) of the US which called for reoccupying the school following repair work carried out.

The fresh argument levelled at the government by the opposition speaks to risking pollution to the nation’s water supply thus endangering the well-being of citizens and residents. Other concerned individuals, including various experts, continue to add their voices to the ongoing national drama.

The August 2015 publicised NIOSH report advised that all unfinished renovation be finished before “reoccupying the school.”

The Conclusions paragraph of that report read as follows:

“We did not find any major mold problems at the school during our assessment. The hydrogen sulfide odor that we smelled in the chemistry lab was likely due to a dry drain trap, and not from the water supply or from a leaking septic tank. Most of the classrooms were naturally ventilated and ANSIIASHRAE guidelines state that natural ventilation is not considered practical in hot and humid climates because it can be ineffective at maintaining the RH below 65% [ASHRAE 2009]. As far as we could determine the prior building and sewer problems at BHS had been adequately addressed, but additional repairs (for example, the metal roof over the wood shop and machine shop) are needed, and all unfinished renovation work needs to be completed prior to reoccupying the school. We did not determine if all of the air conditioners had been properly maintained or were functioning as designed. Routine maintenance of classroom buildings was a problem acknowledged by some of the school and government officials that we met in St. Kitts.”

Fugitive Killer Changes His Look

By: Spokesman Newsroom

BASSETERRE, St.Kitts– While on the run from police for over a year, the convicted killer recently caught and deported back to the nearby island of St. Maarten, grew his hair and changed his beard as observed in compared police mugshot photos.

The fugitive, 39-yar-old Kathron ‘Cuchi’ Fortune, last Friday (4th July), was sent back home to resume his 21-year murder prison sentence following an appearance before the District B Magistrate that day to answer local charges laid against including gun and drug possession which he has gotten away from.

As understood, Fortune, who is originally from the island of Grenada, escaped on Monday 15th February 2016 while being escorted by prison guards in waiting to be attended to during scheduled doctor’s visit. He has been taken back to that jail to serve the remainder of his sentence for the murder of Ervin Margarita in May 2006.

Police on St.Kitts informed that the charges were discontinued after the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) looked at the matter with the best interest in mind.

“The DPP having assessed the matter with a view to determine the best course to adopt, determined that our best interest would be served by discontinuing the charges,” said the local authorities in a press release.

Further details outlined: “Consequently, he exercised the powers so vested in him under section 65 (2) (c) of the Constitution to discontinue the charges. This paved the way for Mr. Fortune’s immediate expulsion from the Federation. A deportation order was then sorted and he was deported to St. Maarten later that day escorted by Law Enforcement officials of St. Maarten.”

On Saturday 29 July, members of the Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force acted on information and arrested Fortune in response to the sighting of unusual activity along the coastline in Cranstoun Bay, an area in the vicinity of Newton Ground.

Initial police investigations determined that he had illegally entered the Federation of St.Kitts-Nevis.

Reportedly, Fortune at the time of his arrest had in his possession, amongst other things, a high powered Firearm with a large quantity of matching ammunitions, a bulletproof vest, a large quantity of cured marijuana, some hashish and a sum of US currency.

Having contacted and advised police in St. Maarten were of the arrest, local authorities then discovered the man’s criminal background.

On the day Fortune escaped from police custody in St. Maarten, which happened at about 3:30 PM that day, he was on a visit to orthopaedic surgeon Dr. Paul de Windt in Cay Hill.

As gathered, he took off running and shots were fired at him by the prison guards. Eyewitnesses claimed Fortune shot at the guards as well.

While on the run from police, he was labelled as being “armed and dangerous.” Members of the public were also advised that he had possibly changed his appearance and might have been using several disguises and mode of transportation to get from one location to another.

Old BHS Can be fixed For New School Term

By: Spokesman Newsroom

BASSETERRE, St.Kitts– The abandoned Basseterre High School (BHS) located on Victoria Road can repaired as guided by the professional recommendations given so as to accommodate students for the upcoming school term in September this year.

That is the kind of advice offered to the government by well-known pediatrician and Physician Executive Dr. Patrick Martin, retired Chief Medical Officer, who, in his latest media statement issued yesterday (10th July), cautioned against building a new school in the Pond’s Estate community near the aquifer since such an activity poses a contamination threat to the country’s water supply by bodily waste from human beings.

Notably, the government currently estimates that the construction of the new school will cost about $40 million dollars. Dr. Martin has also outlined that refurbishing the old school will cost less in getting it prepared by next month.

According to him: “All waters in and around the Federation are our livelihood. These precious and irreplaceable gifts from nature must be protected by legislation and force of arms.”

He has suggested that the government make good upon the recommendations of 2015 report produced by an international agency called NIOSH (National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health) to repair the old school.

Dr. Martin stated that “NIOSH is an environmental health authority par excellence. Its findings and conclusions should trump conjecture and associated “fire and fury”.”

NIOSH’s headquarters is located in Washington D.C in the United States.

Dr. Martin addressed the environmental destruction that can be had should the new school be built in the identified area.

“The proposed new BHS in Pond’s Estate poses a risk of fecal contamination of the underlying aquifer which is already under the threat of salt water intrusion. There is also the possibility that locating a centralized sewage plant near residential areas can lead to legal action and political disquiet if the facility produces unpleasant odours such as hydrogen sulphide and ammonia.”

He continued: “In the circumstances, the precautionary principle and erring on the side of caution make sense. The former states that in the absence of scientific consensus that a policy or action is not harmful, the burden of proof falls on the proponents of the policy or action. The latter means choosing the safer course of action instead of taking a risk.”

Dr. Martin highlighted that need to conduct risk and impact assessment at Ponds’ Estate in going forward whilst pointing out that the old school site at Victoria Road can be fixed by next month.

“Going forward, the inescapable first step is the conduct of risk and impact assessments. Without them, one cannot scientifically and conclusively estimate the environmental, social and financial costs of a constructing new BHS over the aquifer or anywhere else.”

“However, at Victoria Road, decision-makers and the public can rely on the expertise, credibility and recommendations of NIOSH. The mold, sewer and uncleanliness issues are surmountable. It should not cost $40 million to complete refurbishment by mid-September,” he added.

Dr. Martin Paid After Correcting PM Harris’ Wrong Info

By: Spokesman Newsroom

BASSETERRE, St.Kitts-Forced retiree former Chief Medical Officer (CMO) Dr. Patrick Martin,58, has collected his payment five days after publicly correcting Prime Minister Dr. Timothy Harris who had said that he (Dr. Martin) was paid already when such was not the case at the time.

“There has been a development, the payments that were due to me and the Prime Minister claimed I received, were delivered on Friday August 4” Dr. Martin said to WINNFM on Saturday 5th August.

Appearing on that radio station’s weekly edition of ‘The Bigger Picture’ six days before, aired on Sunday 30 July, Dr. Harris seemingly lashed out at Dr. Martin claiming that he was “properly paid” and accused him of making a “political hay” about the retirement matter.

PM Harris had expressed: “Dr. Martin has no reasonable and rational expectation to anything other than to get the payment which was properly paid to him, and to me for him to as it were be trying to be making a political hay about this is highly irresponsible and unprofessional.”

In response to that wrong piece of information given, Dr. Martin issued a media statement three days after on Wednesday 2nd August saying: “I wish to state categorically that to date, I have not received any monies that are due to me as a consequence of my retirement from the public service.”

The former CMO also touched on reserving his legal rights to defend his dignity.

“The circumstances surrounding this matter have become most unfortunate and I reserve all legal rights in relation to this matter, including in relation to any attempts to undermine my dignity as a citizen.

Dr. Martin, was pushed at the center of controversy involving the Harris-led government in June last year after he interrupted a stem cell research activity, which he did not authorize, being conducted at the private ward of the Joseph N. France Hospital.

After making the discovery, he ordered a Brazilian physician, not licensed to work in St. Kitts, off the hospital’s compound.

Within 24 hours that scandalous incident, he got a letter at 3:00 PM instructing that he take pre-retirement leave effective midnight.

A recent incident which further fuelled more controversy surrounding this pre-retirement matter came last month (July) after he received a second, delivered by two police officers to his home, which pushed his scheduled retirement four months early ahead of the November 2017 expected timeframe.

Local Company Increases Monetary Contribution To Patriots

By: Precious Mills

BASSETERRE, St.Kitts– The Royal Beach Casino has renewed its monetary contribution to the St.Kitts and Nevis Patriots team, increasing the amount given last year.

On the morning of Friday 28th July, President of the Royal Beach Casino, Ugo Gagliardi presented a cheque in the amount of US$ 36,000 to the captain of the Caribbean Premier League Twenty 20 (CPLT20) tournament, Carlos Brathwaite during a handing over ceremony held at the Sky Ultra Lounge housed inside the casino located at the St.Kitts Marriott Resort in Frigate Bay.

This stands an increase of US$8,500 to last year’s cheque which was us$27,500.

Speaking to reporters Chief Operating Officer of the franchise and Team Manager Richard Berridge spoke about how essential such a lump sum contribution is.

“We need these sort of sponsorships because when you look at the players’ salary caps along which is US$8, 000 so it shows you the sort of money we need to keep the show running.”

He also talked about the significance of getting partners on board.

“We’re very happy to continue our partnership with the Royal Beach Casino. They came onboard. They came on board the first year; we are going into our third year now. For this product to sustain itself long term, we have to partner with not only local companies but global brands as well to take advantage of the platform that is created with CPL so we are very happy for this partnership being renewed and we look forward to solidifying it.”

In speaking with this media house, Gagliardi explained that the value of the company’s contribution exceeds the financial figure.

“From a monetary standpoint it’s a US 36,000 that we’ve contributed…but it’s more of what it represents; one- as a sporting event and 2- as working with an organisation like the Patriots; I was very impressed with Richard, his administrative team mates (and) the team members and so for us it was a very easy decision to make and I think this thing has a platform to grow and grow.”

Gagliardi went on to talk about cricket being the type of sport that can motivate Caribbean nationals.

“As the (Sports) minister (Hon. Shawn Richards) said this is the type of example of aspiration for young people in the Caribbean, both me and women. Sometimes in St.Kitts or in the Caribbean (on a whole), people are looking at American stars but you have your own homegrown talent and a beautiful sport in cricket which internationally is well- represented perhaps not necessarily in North America. So you have all of these young people who can have a future in professional sports as well everything else. So for us that’s the key.”

Patriots Depending Too Much On Chris Gayle?

By: Precious Mills
BASSETERRE, St.Kitts– Could the St.Kitts & Nevis Patriots team be overlying on its celebrity teammate captain Chris Gayle, a celebrated batsman?

That line of questioning was put to Team Manager and Chief Operating Officer of the team franchise Richard Berridge while interacting with local reporters at last Friday’s cheque handing over ceremony of US$36, 000 to the Patriots from the Royal Beach Casino held at the company’s premises at the St.Kitts Marriott Resort in Frigate Bay.

Richard Berridge (Photo credit: today.caricom.org)

Berridge was asked specifically: With Chris Gyale as the captain do you feel that there might be a sort of over reliance on his performance rather than a spread of good performance from the team?

In his response, he told: “I think that is the first thought that comes to everybody, especially with the fans when hear Chris Gayle’s name everybody just sort of think of him in term of being able to win all the games. No sport, you can’t have a team that’s reliant on just one person.

Berridge added: “So the good thing is that we know that, the coaching staff knows that, the players know that (and) Chris knows that so it is something that we are addressing from a mental standpoint going into the tournament; to know that every player that is on the team and even the squad, hat all of them are equally important and have a role to play.”

In December 2016, Gayle of Jamaica, who previously led his home team the Jamaica Tallawahs, signed with the St.Kitts & Nevis Patriots.

Leading that team in all four editions of the Hero Caribbean Primer League (CPL) tournament, the Tallawahs dominated the championship twice in 2013 and in 2016.

As part of the 2017 St.Kitts & Nevis Patriots match schedule, four games are slated to take place in St.Kitts this month at Warner Park featuring on Friday 18th August Patriots vs Barbados Tridents, Saturday 19th August Patriots vs St. Lucia Stars, Monday 21st August Patriots vs Jamaica Tallawahs and Wednesday 23rd August Patriots vs Trinidad Knight Riders.
