Occupational Safety and Health

By: Joseph Jones

Workers (People) for next year by God’s grace promise to me that you are going to do it right as it relates to Occupational Safety and Health. Hear this: I am pleased too; to be able to bring to you very informative articles on the above subject.

The wrong things go up and the wrong things go down. For instance-Criticism, discouragement, disillusionment and boredom go up. Body weight, blood pressure, heart rate cholesterol go up.

Hello! Vital capacity, oxygen consumption, flexibility, stamina and strength go down.

Being an onlooker in the arena, living is also risky. Workers! We too are often guilty of tuning out. We don’t want to hear in the midst of scolding (rebuke) “Are you listening to me?” There is a need to review the state of Occupational Safety and Health in St. Kitts-Nevis, and in particular to assess the development of workers’ educational programmes again on the subject.

Some years ago, I attended an ILO/Danida Regional Workers Educational Project on Occupational Safety and Health and it provided the opportunity for me to monitor progress since that time, and that is why I write.

Before I close, let me make touch on the topic of noise once again in this week’s article. At times, the level of it will increase both at the workplace and outside of it. At work, this is due to automation (A method to control industrial processes) Why? Because the machinery has been made more efficient and work faster thus increasing the noise level. Not all sounds is noise; it is only the sounds that we do not like we call noise.

I am going to look here during the Christmas season how sound is produced and how it is distributed.

People, I wish to advise you to just listen and also establish what effect(s), it has on us, and what we can do to protect our hearing  when the sound levels get too high.

Excessive loud noise can damage  our hearing. It is not only hearing that can be affected  but also blood circulation which can lead to stress or tensionin the body.

We may find it difficult to sleep if we spend more than five (5) hours in this noise level.

Workers (people), as the year is coming to the end, another begins.

*NOTE WELL* If you pause to think then workers (people), you will find cause to thank.

Thank you for reading.

A Few Basic Steps To Organizing A Trades And Labour Union

0

On the belief of the Church (, Disciples of Christ)

Resolution on the Church and Labour, Disciples of Christ, 1938), “We believe in the right of laboring men/women to organize for protection against unjust conditions and to secure a more adequate share of the fruits of their toil. The right to organize implies the right to hold and wield power, which in turn implies responsibility for the manner in which this power is exercised.”

In the St. Kitts-Nevis Trades & Labour Union, we are rightly proud of our democratic tradition because our members run the Union and we are with them every step of the way.

In addition, we also teach different workers how to build and run their own Union. Nonetheless, let us move on by looking at a few basic steps to organizing a Union.

Step 1: Build an Organizing Committee. We here in the St. Kitts-Nevis Trades & Labour Union fully believe that leaders must be identified as well as an organizing committee representing the entire workforce. Thus, gender diversity in the workforce must be established.

However, Organizing committee training must begin immediately. Therefore, committee members must be prepared to work hard to educate themselves and their co-workers about the impending management anti-Union campaign that will sure to follow.

The Organizing committee must also be educated about workers right to organize a Union at their workplace and must also understand policies and principles of democracy.

Also at this step, basic information about the workplace must be gathered, which include the following:

· Workplace structure, departments, work areas, type of jobs, shifts

· Employees information such as their names, address, phone number, job title and department for each worker (employee list).

· Employer information, such as the parent company, product(s), customers, other local branch, and if they have a history of avoiding or dealing with Unions.

Step 2: Adopt an issue program. The Organizing committee must develop a program of the workers demands (For example, the improvements they organizing to achieve, and a strategy for the Union election campaign.

A solid plan for highlighting the issues at the workplace must be carried out through various sub-committees campaign activities.

Step 3: Sign-up the majority of the workers as Union card bearing members. In the case of the St. Kitts-Nevis Trades & Labour Union, we encourage the workers to join and give their support to our programmes. In fact, the goal is to ensure that we have a sizable majority (50+).

The organizing campaign must proceed quickly once it begins because it now becomes necessary to hold a Union election.

Step 4: Win the Union Election to be Recognized by the Employer. Those workers signed up information are used (and required) to help petition the Minister responsible for industrial matters or the Department through the Labour Commissioner to hold an election.

In fact when all of the process are followed, it should take no longer than at least two to three days for the competent authority to determine if the Union won the election and to advise the employer to recognize the Union as the bargaining agent on behalf of all the workers at the workplace.

Step 5: Negotiate a Collective Agreement. Even after being recognized, the organizing committee does not let up after the victory. The real goal of the campaign is the Collective Agreement (The document that the Union and the employer negotiate and signed, covering everything from wages/salaries, to how disputes will be handled) is still to be achieved.

Therefore, the workers must continue to be mobilized to continue to support the Union’s collective agreement demands (Decided by you and your co-workers) and put pressure on the employer to meet those demands.

Please keep in mind though that the result of this Collective Agreement belongs to you, so own it proudly.

As time is of the utmost importance, we will have to stop here for now but will continue to raise whatever issues that the workers of this our very beautiful Federation wish us to bring to the public view.

As we end for today we leave you with a quote by Pope Paul, 1971, and a song by the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

“The important role of Union organizations must be admitted: Their objects is the representation of the various categories of workers, their lawful collaboration in the economic advance of society and the development of the sense of their responsibility for the realization for the common good.” – Pope Paul, 1971.

Prisoner Runs Away, Returns To Police Under An Hour

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts (Friday 14th December 2018)- Messages of warning were abuzz via social media, particularly WhatsApp, earlier this week after news broke that convicted murderer Romeo ‘Buncum’ Cannonier had escaped police custody while on a work assignment in the Lime Kiln community.

In less than an hour, however, alarms of fear and concern among citizens and residents were hushed after a follow-up on the situation revealed that the prisoner believed to be in his 40s was back in police custody having turned himself into the authorities.

It is unclear what happened on Tuesday morning (11th December) when Cannonier, who was among other prisoners, ran away while on work assignment in the vicinity of the government operated abattoir.

The incident is said to have occurred sometime after 11AM that morning.

Police confirmed the runaway incident which has sparked a public debate about why such a prisoner was not monitored heavily by security while out in the open.

Cannonier is said to have turned himself into police sometime after 12noon that day.

He is currently serving life at the Her Majesty’s Prison (HMP) having been convicted of the 2004 killing of police constable Delvin Nisbett and the 2005 killing of Gavin ‘Magilla’ Gilbert.

Music Festival Moves To Bird Rock; Artistes Announced

By: Precious Mills

BASSETERRE, St.Kitts (Friday 14th December 2018)- The 2019 edition of the annual St.Kitts Music Festival will be staged at the Kim Collins Athletic Stadium located at Bird Rock-moving away from Warner Park- which comes as one of the new changes for the yearly extravaganza.

Such detail was revealed last Friday (6th December) during a press conference for the unveiling of the first wave of artistes during a ceremony held at the Ocean Terrace Inn (OTI) located at Fortlands which comes some seven months ahead of the three-nightly concerts slated to take place 26th to 30th June.

Four acts have been announced namely: Legendary American R&B and Soul singer Smokey Robinson, American-Nigerian entertainer Davido, Jamaican dancehall entertainer Popcaan and Moroccan-American rapper French Montana.

Chairman of the Artiste Selection Committee Jonel Powell, who made the announcement, commented that “…We’re confident that the slate of artistes that we have come up for you in 2019 will certainly top this year.”

He also told that announced as so far line-up “will attract just about everybody to the new venue for 2019 regardless of age, regardless of genres that you like…”

With the exception of Popcaan, the other acts will be making debut performances in the Federation.

As it relates to the new venue, Festival Chairman Damion Hobson outlined that a few new changes will be made for 2019 with the new venue being the main one.

“The 2019 St.Kitts Music festival will be hosted at the Kim Collins Athletic Stadium. Trust me when I tell you the layout will be awesome. More effort would be made to ensure that no patron is disadvantaged when it comes to their preferred style of viewing the performances, and we intend to be more sensitive to the needs of those that may special needs of those who may be differently abled.”

According to him: “I again promise for 2019, we’ll have an even better venue layout to cater to all groups including those who wish to sit and view the performances.

As to what has led to the change of venue, the Music Festival official remarked: “Based on the artiste that we have announced today and who we will announce in January, we felt that we needed a bigger venue. On top of that, there is cricket as well in June 2019 and already we were being pushed to the football field [at Warner Park which is] just an absolute no no. In terms of the Kims Collins Stadium, there are a number of advantages; it’s a much bigger venue, we would be able to control how much space we want on the ground.”

He also talked about better viewing from the stands and wheelchair access.

Hobson said that the upcoming festival “will see the performances of different genres lasting up to an hour and a half.”

He added: “We’ll also feature artistes who cater to the fancies of all Music Festival goers- the young, the mature and all others and again I assure you that in January we will present a great new New Year’s gift to all fans when we make our final announcements.”

Hobson recalled the early release announcement in December 2017 for the 2018 production indicating that the most recent announcement comes as the committee breaking its own record.
