Taiwan Embassy Partners With Local Media In Film Production Series

By: Precious Mills

BASSETERRE, St.Kitts (Friday 11th January 2018)-  The Embassy of the Republic of China (Taiwan) and national media entity ZBC (ZIZ Broadcasting Corporation) have teamed up to showcase a 24-epiosde Taiwanese television drama series called ‘The New World’ come next week.

On Tuesday 8th January, a media luncheon ceremony was held at the conference room of Ocean Terrace Inn (OTI) located at Fortland whereby local journalists, editors and other media personnel were treated to highlights of the show as well as a scrumptious meal.

Episodes are expected to be air on ZIZ Television on Thursdays-starting 17th January- at 8:30PM with a rebroadcast on Mondays at 1:30 PM.

‘The New World’  is described to be a show which tells an intriguing story of a young woman dragged into a mysterious case with a secret hidden for five decades.

Resident Taiwan ambassador Tom Lee, during his remarks, commented that “Watching Taiwanese TV series is like making a journey to Taiwan.”

Lightheartedly, he also shared that: “If you watch all the episodes , you will feel like you have been to Taiwan 24 times and another time you will know Taiwan  better than I do” whilst adding “ and most importantly you would be inspired and dare to dream.”

He informed that members of the Embassy experienced part of the recently concluded Sugar Mas 47 (St.Kitts-Nevis National Carnival) by looking on at J’ouvert while members of the Technical Mission participated in Glow Parade.

According to Ambassador Lee: “It is through cultural exchanges we can form a very good foundation to further deepen our relations. That’s why today I’m very happy to introduce one Taiwanese series ‘The New World’ to all of you.”

Acting General Manager of ZBC Vere Galloway touched on the long-standing relationship with the Taiwan Embassy.

“The relationship between ZIZ and the Embassy of the Republic of China (Taiwan) has been an exceptional one which has benefitted both partners. ZIZ has benefitted, in the past, through material support in order to meet our objectives and we have afforded the Embassy a platform to showcase the beautiful country of Taiwan to the citizens of St.Kitts and Nevis.”

Galloway talked about the company looking forward every year to “the simple but impactful video features” such as National Day celebrations and videos highlighting the various cultural groups that have visited the Federation.

Galloway pointed out that in recent years ZIZ was privileged through the Taiwan Embassy to have a radio link up, an initiative which lasted a few months whereby DJs engaged in the sharing of cultures.

He said that programme “was enjoyed by both audiences” who tuned in.

The ZIZ official further spoke about such media partnership which included the showing of the Taiwanese TV series called ‘The Good Wife’- aired in November 2017- which was enjoyed by viewers. He expressed anticipation that the new series is expected to be well received likewise.

“When we came up with the idea of broadcasting for 24 hours a day, we realised that this could be mutually beneficial opportunity for us and the Taiwanese Embassy; we showcase their culture and they assist us in our role of 24-hours programming,” he stated.

Galloway went on to say: “ ‘The Good Wife’ was shown on ZIZ Television on Thursday evenings at 8:30 with a repeat broadcast on Monday at 1:30 in the afternoon. Viewers responded well to ‘The Good Wife’ to the point where we received many requests for the series to be repeated because people were saying that they missed some of the episodes. We are therefore confident that this new series ‘The New World’ which is a duration of 30 minutes is an action-packed romantic drama geared towards the younger viewers than ‘The Good Wife’ but that will be just as received.”

Fraco Man Cart Is OK!

0

By: Precious Mills

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts (Friday 11th January 2019)-“This is my baby! I love it!”

So said 60-year-old Elsroy ‘Too Ni’ Dorset also known as the Snow Cone/Fraco Man during an exclusive interview with this reporter earlier this week outside his Lower Sheer Lane Avenue home in Central Basseterre in giving a status on his cart following the take-over jam session with the three-peat Troupe of the Year ULTRA Carnival on Las’ Lap (Wednesday 2nd January) for Sugar Mas 47.

“The status on the cart is good; it’s in good shape. From what I understand some people said the cart was stolen…but as you can see where I’m living, the cart is in good condition! My experience with ULTRA was great! I loved it!”

The small business owner says he has been selling fraco since 1984 and has had his present cart-which he built himself- for “more than 20 years” while adding “ I keep repairing it.”

Notably, for the over 30 years that has been selling the popular icy beverage of varied flavours, he has owned about five (5) carts.

This Fraco Man is known for selling his fraco at Lower Market Street.

He informed that after being contacted by at least two members of ULTRA Carnival, the plan originally was for him to be part of the Fraco Fusion segment of the overall Sugar Rush troupe.

“Me and Ms. [Julie] Martin had been speaking about it for some time so New Year’s Day I was supposed to be in the troupe. Ms. Martin had me in a good section of the troupe; she told me what to do (that was) anybody in the troupe want fraco is free. The revellers for Fraco Fusion, the fraco was supposed to be free but eventually New Year’s Day because it was so much ups and downs, moving here, moving there and then when the last set of troupes came down, they came down so fast so I couldn’t do anything so I got left back. So I came on Las’ Lap and Las’ Lap was just craziness; I’ll call it that! Even me went crazy because I love to enjoy meself too so it was a lot of fun. I loved it!”

The Fraco Man was seen dancing about and having a good time with revellers as they took over his cart party style.

As gathered, someone who knows him, retrieved his cart from the Bay Road area in the vicinity of College Street ghaut that night after Las’ Lap which he discovered early the next morning.

“I didn’t go for it; somebody else did. I was coming across Central Street but I was-how to put it?- ‘Nice’! and everybody was asking me for the cart  and I said to them ‘Don’t  worry about the cart, the cart is safe.’ You know? I even make a joke –maybe is me blow it (the rumour) up because I make a joke saying ‘Don’t worry man they (not meaning the revellers but just making a general statement) tief de cart but tomorrow I’m going to build a new one!’ so I was coming cross Central Street but I was moving left to right because you know  I had such a good time but a lady who know me –I have four children for her sister- she said ‘No, come let’s go home’ so she hold me hand and she bring me home so the next morning she came by me early  and she said ‘I saying you still sleeping’ and I said ‘no, I done up long time.’ Don’t care how much I drink, I get up early. So the status of the cart, the cart is in good condition!”

Douglas To Byron: ‘Ask Simmonds How I Treated Him’

By: Precious Mills

BASSETERRE, St.Kitts (Friday 11th January 2019)- As far as the legal team for Opposition Leader Dr. Denzil Douglas is concerned, if only the present Prime Minister Dr. Timothy Harris had extended the courtesy of granting him a diplomatic passport as the immediate former prime minister, he (Douglas) would not be involved in the ongoing controversial diplomatic passport situation.

The ongoing issue involves Dr. Douglas who is defendant in the case brought against him by the Attorney General Vincent ‘Juicy’ Byron Jr.-the claimant.

Following yesterday’s (Thursday) adjourned matter on the case at the High Court presided over by Justice Trevor Ward QC, Dr. Douglas was overheard in a conversation with Byron saying to him: “Ask Simmonds how I treated him” in referring to the courtesy extended to the former Prime Minister Sir Kennedy Simmonds of the former PAM Administration by his Labour Party government.

Byron’s response to Dr. Douglas though not clearly heard apparently did not sit well with Dr. Douglas according to his facial expression and response in addressing the courtesy that should have been extended to him as a former head of government.

In a formal interview with members of the local press, Dr. Douglas formally addressed those sentiments he had expressed to Byron one on one before his interaction with reporters.

“This is really an abuse of taxpayers’ money. It is part of a political charade that Dr. Harris is pursuing. It is part of his vendetta. It is part of his vindictiveness and it has become part of his very nature. I gave Dr. Simmonds a diplomatic passport in the time it was required….All of this is happening because of the vindictiveness of Harris, refusing to issue a diplomatic passport to a former head of government, the present leader of the opposition of this country,” he remarked.

Dr. Douglas says he is “very optimistic in the sense that I am not a citizen of Dominica; never pretended to be one…”

Senior Counsel of Dr. Douglas’ legal team Anthony Astaphan, in speaking to members of the media, outlined that: “…one of the points that I really wanted to make which may be a bit beyond the legal boundaries-The reason why Dr. Douglas was put in this position with the diplomatic passport was that this Prime Minister and this Minister of Foreign Affairs refused in accordance with protocol to give a diplomatic passport to a former prime minister and leader of the opposition.”

Astaphan continued: “When Dr. Douglas explained that to the Prime Minister of Dominica, he was a little astounded, disappointed and as a result of which and the language used by Dr. Douglas is absolutely accurate because of that deprivation as a matter of personal and professional courtesy, it was given to him and I can tell you that the Prime Minister’s position on that is as Dr. Douglas said because I was aware of the subsequent discussions with the prime minister on it. Had the common courtesy to former prime ministers been given, we would not be here today.”

“I think it is regrettable that a former prime minister has to go through this type of harassment but we will see what happens at the end of the case,” he told.

According to him: “Our case is a very simple one that this diplomatic passport was given to Dr. Douglas a matter of professional and personal courtesy. He applied for it as required under the regulation. He did not declare his citizen ship to be Dominican at no time even when he travelled with his regular passport or with the diplomatic passport, His nationality was always declared as St.Kitts and Nevis or Kittitian.”

Meanwhile, Byron is claiming that the Constitution does not say that one has to swear allegiance as he cited acknowledgement of allegiance in his comments to the media.

“The issue is the use, having accepted and used the passport and Dr. Douglas has not denied that. He has actually filed in the court that he has visited seven countries  at least 10 times  using a Dominican diplomatic passport  and the case is having used  that passport, he falls under the protection  of Dominica…and using the case of…  Joyce in England [1940’s], the House of Lord’s case, we say that that is the acknowledgment of allegiance.”

Both legal teams in the matter are expected to make further submissions by Friday 25th January following matters arising from yesterday’s cross examination session with replies expected by Monday 4th February.

A source at the Police Public Relations Department has revealed that those individuals were nabbed by the authorities yesterday (Tuesday).

22-year-old Calvert Francis, 18-year-old Alvin Browne and a juvenile-believed to be an underage teenage boy- received gunshot wounds to their legs when attackers drove by before opening fire on them just after 9:00PM.

SCHEME UNITY And Their Mamaguy Budget

0

It is the beginning of another new year and, as may well be imagined, our people are wondering, and asking of themselves and each other, what does it hold in store for us all. That is natural and only to be expected.

However, the concerns are somewhat heightened, and understandably so, given that the year just ended has not been a particularly good one, not even for many of those who support the regime now in power.

Of course family members, close relatives and friends have once again done well for themselves, but, in any case, that is only for a very narrow group of them.

So many there are who thought that supporting the incumbents would have positioned them for favourable treatment, but, alas, today they are a group of saddened persons, most of whom have been heard lamenting the grave mistake which they made on Monday 15 February 2015, and vowing that never again will they allow themselves to be taken in by such as those now wielding political power in our fair land.

Once again we say to all those who were led astray, do come back home, come back to where you truly belong. Our arms and our doors are still wide open, and we assure you of a most warn and genuine welcome. We do not hold anything against you, for we know only too well the powers of persuasion of those who are in the vanguard, doing the dirty works of the prince of darkness and his myriad followers.

It is therefore quite understandable that thousands of our people were taken in for a short time by a group of persons who portrayed themselves as being genuinely concerned for you, the people, for your wellbeing and a better future.

Now you know better, are much wiser, and more discerning than before, we feel assured that you will want to seize the opportunity to set matters right.  We know that you are quite capable, and we also know that you wish to make amends. But, we implore you, do not think in such terms. We are just pleased and happy you are able to make the crossing back to your true home.

It is worthy of note that much of what is (and has been) happening here is akin to the negatives which have been playing out in other areas of the world, the efforts from on high to silence dissent being amongst the more obvious.

The most horrific slaying and dismemberment of the Saudi Arabian Washington Post journalist, Mr. Jamal Khashoggi, an obvious state sponsored murder, reminds us of the many instances when right here, in our own land, persons who dared to criticise the naked emperor found themselves, their relatives, their homes and their business places on the receiving end of some heavy gunfire.

Another of the many negative features playing out on the international level has been that of certain kinds of politicians openly lying to the people they govern, and doing so

knowingly, loudly, brazenly, shamelessly and repeatedly. That practice has also been indulged in our case. Indeed, it would be on point to say that it is one of the main inventory items in SCHEME UNITY’s ‘stock-in-trade’.

For more than two centuries, Americans have regarded Chicago politicians as being amongst the most long-winded in the world. It is that which led to Chicago being given the moniker of ‘windy city’. That trait is readily applicable to the so-called leader of SCHEME UNITY.

The budget address given in our parliament in December 2018 was truly of the Chicago variety. In the local lingo it would be said that there was ‘a lot of froth and no mauby’.

Our people had been waiting for so long, praying that at long last something truly positive would have been drawn up, obtained the backing and support of those in office, as well as those in parliament, and then offered to us. But that was not to be.

As our beloved Comrade Leader pointed out while responding in parliament to the address, the entire process has been shrouded in secrecy, so unlike that which obtained when he was in office as prime minister and minister for finance. Quite notable, and worrying, is the fact that the private sector has been completely eliminated from the annual exercise.

Then, too, there is the matter of the concealment of The IMF Report. Why? What is there to hide?

In the budget, if budget it be at all, the capital area has all the appearances of being nothing more than a hodge-podge of “projects” hastily thrown together, in an all too obvious effort to ‘justify’ the expenditures, but which, when compared with the projections for later on in the lives of the projects, bear absolutely NO resemblance whatsoever to reality.

It is all a mamaguy, and that, dear people of St. Kitts and Nevis, is the kindest thing which can be said of this whole affair, a most sordid matter when considered in its entirety.

The ‘budget’ presented to parliament last month, December 2018, has left our people devoid of hope and encouragement. So many now feel abandoned, and go about discharging their daily tasks and responsibilities with their countenances bearing the look of the forlorn, and that is understandably so.

That so many of our people have been able to maintain their equanimity is most commendable, for the whole exercise can only be accurately summed up as ‘a mamaguy budget’, namely an attempt to make monkeys out of us.

Historically, Kittitians and Nevisians do not take kindly to any person or persons trying to make monkeys out of us. The current situation makes no difference in that regard.

An appeal is hereby made to ALL of our people to maintain their calmness and coolness, for certain elements will most definitely seek to provoke ‘trouble’, thereby providing a ‘cloak’ behind which they can carry out their infamous devilry.

Do not be fooled, dear people. What transpired during the J’ouvert on Boxing Day could very well have been one such ‘provoked’ situation. It does seem to have all the appearances of having been deliberately ‘stirred up’, so that stronger efforts could be ‘lawfully’ taken to beat-up our people, as some of the external police entities have been advocating.

Creatures such as those in SCHEME UNITY are notorious for employing such measures.

We should therefore remain cool and calm, and refuse to fall into their traps.

Let us all give our full support to our beloved Comrade Leader who, during his response to the budget address, invited ALL of our people “to come on board!” Doing so will lift the spirits of all of us and give us “the opportunity to continue to make their contribution in the development of our country, your country, my country, the country of the people of Nevis, the country of the people of St. Kitts, and the country of the Next Gen SKN!”

We quite simply CANNOT afford to allow the SCHEME UNITY lot to make monkeys of us.
