Sir Richard Branson ‘interested’ in investing in LIAT

0

St. John’s, Antigua and Barbuda, (Antigua Observer) – The Cabinet of Antigua and Barbuda has indicated that the British entrepreneurial magnate, Sir Richard Branson – of Virgin Atlantic fame – has shown interest in investing in the financially challenged regional airline, LIAT.

This was according the Chief of Staff within the Of- fice of the Prime Minister, Lionel Hurst, who made the revelation yesterday at the weekly post-Cabinet press briefing.

According to Hurst, discussions held with the British capitalist involved growing the struggling air- line out of its situation, with the hope that it would be- come a profit-making enter- prise.

According to the Cabinet notes, LIAT would have to enlarge its fleet and add other aircraft types. Hurst said, “The entrepreneur has proposed in- vesting several million dollars. He would wet lease several aircraft, jets, and they would fly from Fort Lauderdale to Jamaica, Haiti and down into Antigua and Barbados.

“The whole idea is to enlarge LIAT, rather than collapse LIAT or making it a smaller entity.” This investment, Hurst said, would allow the air carrier to fly to destinations out- side of the region.

“He [Sir Richard Bran- son] is not going to plow his resources into a smaller LIAT that would not be able to achieve a profitable status. There just is not [enough] passengers and other kinds of possibilities to make LIAT profitable within the Caribbean,” he said.

Meanwhile, the government of Antigua and Barbuda is continuing its discussions with Barbados to purchase that country’s shares in the regional carrier. Hurst said Barbados has indicated that its shares in LIAT have been a burden on the country, which is currently going through an International Monetary Fund (IMF) restructuring program.

“We have also made a bid to purchase all the shares from Barbados because the Prime Minister of Barbados [Mia Mottley] has indicated they are burdened,” he said, adding that the value of Barbados’ shares in LIAT has not yet been determined.

This development followed the meeting of LIAT’s shareholder governments in Antigua on Tuesday, where it was agreed that a proposal by Prime Minister Gaston Browne regarding the future direction of the airline would be examined.

As the Barbadian Prime Minister was not present at the meeting, the Barbadian representative said upon his return he would raise with Prime Minister Mottley the issue of Antigua and Barbuda’s intent to purchase all of Barbados’ shares. A response is expected shortly.

During the meeting, Browne presented the proposal which is expected to be put into writing within a week. That proposal, according to reports, involves – among other things – a way to finance the keeping of the three planes owned by the Caribbean Development Bank.

There was a suggestion that the planes be sold as part of the downsizing of LIAT and there is consensus among some shareholders that this is a matter which merits very serious consideration. However, Hurst reiterated that the government would not allow any downsizing of LIAT to take place.

Child Finds Granny Murdered

By: Spokesman Newsroom

BASSETERRE, St.Kitts (Friday 3rd May 2019) – Granddaughter of homicide victim 77-year-old Constance Thompson-Gumbs has revealed how her granny was tragically discovered dead by a child earlier this week.

Via a GoFundMe account set up to assist the family with raising some finances amidst the tragedy, Bora Thompson explains: “On April 29th, 2019 around 5:30 PM, a child walked up to the front steps of Constance Thompson-Gumbs’ residence in Conaree, St Kitts to give her a few coins in exchange for a small snack. Chips, local candy, and juice were amongst some of the treats she sold to the children just to make ends meet. As he pushed open the door, he found Constance on the floor, not breathing and injured from significant wounds to the body… to that child and that neighborhood she was ‘Consie’. To her 6 children, she was ‘Mom’. To her 15 grandchildren was ‘Grandma’.

She continued: On April 29th, 2019 just before 5:30 pm our 77-year-old grandmother who lived alone in a community she loved, was robbed and murdered. My family is angry, we are confused, we are heartbroken but nothing can bring her back. Instead, we ask for your help. My grandmother had 6 children and 15 grandchildren all of which she loved dearly and wanted nothing more for us to be together and love one another so that is our goal.”

Thompson explained that her grandmother’s services will be held in St Kitts but “Due to this unexpected tragedy, we did not have time to financially prepare for this trip and we do not have the funds to get everyone there to say their last goodbyes. Any help is truly, sincerely appreciated.”

Police received a report of a body being found in a house at Conaree at approximately 5:30 p.m.

Officers responded and found Thompson-Gumbs lying motionless in the living room of her house with multiple stab wounds in various parts of her body.

The District Medical Officer, Dr. Maria Warner was summoned to the scene and pronounced Thompson dead. Personnel from the Forensic Unit processed the scene and took items of evidential value into custody.

A man is in police custody assisting with the investigating into the incident.  Investigations into the matter are ongoing.

Thompson-Gumbs is the Federation’s 10th homicide victim; her death occurring days after a young man(Donald Cornelius) was gunned down in Nevis.

Protestors Show Up At BHS Building Ceremony

By: Spokesman Newsroom

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts (Friday 3rd May 2019) – Irritated by the government’s continued moves to construct the new Basseterre High School on a section of the Basseterre Aquifer, yesterday morning (Thursday), a group protestors of opposition the St.Kitts-Nevis Labour Party (SKNLP) – including top officials-staged a protest at the unveiling of the 3D model ceremony at the proposed Ponds Estate site, organised by the Ministry of Education.

Eyewitness reports have indicated that at least one female protestor was allegedly arrested while credible information revealed that the SKNLP immediately sought a lawyer in the matter.

Yesterday members of the opposition and supporters staged a protest at the proposed site of the new Basseterre High School (BHS)

Yesterday’s demonstration came one day after SKNLP candidate for Constituency One ((East Basseterre) Dr. Geoffrey Hanley said at the party’s monthly press conference that: “I want to make it absolutely clear that I am against any construction of that magnitude on top the main source of our drinking water in East Basseterre. It is a serious threat to the lives of more than half the population of across St.Kitts and Nevis, and the St.Kitts-Nevis Labour Party and concerned citizens of St.Kitts and Nevis will not sit idly by while the government put our drinking water in danger.”

He accused the government of attempting to fool the people of the country.

“There has been much talk about what can be built on the aquifer and who lives on the aquifer. This is the argument that this government and the Hon. Ian ‘Patches’ Glasford Liburd are pushing to fool the people of this country and tell them that it is ok for the school to be built there.”

Dr. Hanley continued: “The Minister is arguing that strain was already put on the aquifer by building these projects in the Newtown area. How then can the same minister be saying that it is ok to construct a school housing some 1400 students on the same site. Is the minister saying the water issues are already at its worst so building on the aquifer will not be any different?”

The East Basseterre representative talked about what the aquifer is saying: “The aquifer is a large pool of underground water, and as you have been hearing, it spans under the constituencies One, Two, Three and Eight. This great pool of underground water has different sections that range in different sizes and depths. Have you ever wondered why other areas were developed and built on but not this one specific site? This site covers the biggest pool of underground water of them all. Ask Minister Patches; he knows!”

He then went on to state: “That is why this site must be protected. It is the main source of our drinking water. Do you remember at times whenever there were heavy rains, Newton and Ponds Pasture would be easily flooded? Think back. When you look at this area today, you   will see that lots of dirt has been deposited there on the hill like structure berm was created. That was in 2014 under the Labour government. This berm was created to trap the water to replenish the aquifer and to reduce the amount of surface run-off water that constantly flooded the area. The berm was also constructed because of the decrease in level of water in the aquifer and its increasing salt content. It was built to relieve the water problems this country was facing and this is the same site this government is proposing to build such a major structure.”

“Who exactly is Team Unity Government working for; themselves or for you?” Dr. Geoffrey questioned.

Minister and Prime Minister Dr. Timothy Harris in the  absence of the protestors asked: “How could anyone; anyone with a sane mind, anyone with a patriotic mind, stand as a stumbling block to the progress of thousands of young people who will pass through the doors of the Basseterre High School?”

Dr. Drew Honours Constituency Contributors

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts (Friday 3rd May 2019) – Caretaker of St. Christopher Eight for the opposition St.Kitts-Nevis Labour Party (SKNLP) Dr. Terrance Drew hosted an inaugural Awards Dinner over the past weekend honouring eighteen (18) individuals who have collectively contributed to the development and advancement of the constituency and the country on a whole in various areas including health, education and entertainment.

The prestigious event held at the Royal St.Kitts Hotel in Frigate Bay on Saturday 27th April saw scores of family members of the awardees, residents of Constituency Eight and well-wishers in attendance.

The 13 community awardees in the different fields are: Community Development – Mr. Maxwell Bass Snr.; Entrepreneurship – Mr. Jonathan Bass; Community Leadership – Mr. Desmond Hobson; Healthcare – Ms. Claudette Vanterpool; Youth Development – Mr. Dominic Stevens; Sports – Mr. Mudassa Howe and  Mr. George ‘Yellowman’ Isaac; Labour Spirit/Camaraderie – Mr. Cedric Clarke and Mr.Tristram Mills; Music & Entertainment – Mr. Kervin ‘Infamus’ Benjamin; Agriculture – Ms. Iteena Pemberton; Education – Mrs. Eleanor Phillip; National Contribution – Mr. Zeke Percival.

Dr. Drew, during his remarks, spoke about the awardees as “those who would have contributed significantly to its development; the development of the constituency number 8 being the largest constituency on this island could not have been done without those persons who would have dedicated themselves to the endeavour and so we want to highlight them.”

“We want not only the persons of Constituency Eight to know who these persons are who have contributed significantly to its development and advancement but we want the country and indeed…the wider world [to know also].”

Dr. Drew, who is also the SKNLP Chairman, told that with over 6000 voters in the constituency, it was a “difficult process” to select the awardees noting that these first set of awardees are “deserving”.

“…let me say this is just the first one with many to come, and so those who are not recognised tonight will have the opportunity to be awarded,” he added.

Olympic runner Semenya loses fight over testosterone rules

GENEVA (AP) — The sports world’s highest court ruled Wednesday that Olympic gold medalist Caster Semenya and other female runners like her with unusually high testosterone must take medication to reduce their levels of the male sex hormone if they want to compete in certain events — a landmark decision with far-reaching ramifications for other women’s sports.

In a 2-1 ruling, the Court of Arbitration for Sport upheld proposed rules issued by track’s governing body, the IAAF, saying that they are discriminatory but that “such discrimination is a necessary, reasonable and proportionate means” of “preserving the integrity of female athletics.”

The IAAF argued that high, naturally occurring levels of testosterone in athletes like Semenya with “intersex” characteristics that don’t conform to standard definitions of male and female give them an unfair competitive advantage, and it decreed a maximum level for females.

The court decision could open the way for similar rules in other women’s sports where size, speed and power make a difference, such as weightlifting, boxing, swimming, rugby, field hockey and soccer.

Semenya — a 28-year-old South African whose sculpted biceps and super-fast, blow-away-the-competition times have led others to question her accomplishments — declared she will not be deterred.

“I know that the IAAF’s regulations have always targeted me specifically,” Semenya said in a statement. “For a decade the IAAF has tried to slow me down, but this has actually made me stronger. The decision of the CAS will not hold me back. I will once again rise above and continue to inspire young women and athletes in South Africa and around the world.”

The two-time Olympic champion in the 800 meters will have to lower her testosterone levels by such means as birth control pills or prostate cancer drugs if she wants to defend her world title in September in Doha, Qatar. Semenya is expected to race in the 800 on Friday at a track meet in Doha in what will be the last world-class event before the new rules apply.

Testosterone strengthens muscle tone and bone mass. Because of that, it is against the rules for athletes to use testosterone supplements. Some women have what is known as hyperandrogenism, meaning they have natural levels that are unusually high.

The IAAF rules require women to reduce their levels below 5 nanomoles per liter of blood. According to the IAAF, most females, including elite athletes, have levels of testosterone circulating naturally in their bodies of 0.12 to 1.79 nanomoles per liter, while men have levels that can be dozens or even hundreds of times higher — typically 7.7 to 29.4.

Semenya’s level is considered private medical information and has not been disclosed.

The South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee decried the ruling, saying, “We maintain that the rules are ill-thought and will be a source of distress for the targeted female athletes.”

“This decision marks a massive turning point as it now redefines what a female athlete in particular is,” said Natalie du Toit, head of the organization’s athletes commission, adding: “Knowing Caster and the hard work she has put into her sport, we support all her endeavors, and we are all behind her.”

The IAAF went into the case arguing that female runners with high testosterone have an unfair advantage in events from 400 meters to the mile. However, the court suggested that the IAAF apply the rules only up to the 800 because the evidence was not clear that women with hyperandrogenism have an edge in the 1,500 meters and above.

Under the rule, female athletes whose medical profiles previously showed high testosterone will be subject to blood tests to prove they have complied.

An appeal to Switzerland’s Supreme Court is possible. But judges rarely overturn decisions of the world sports court.

Ross Tucker, a sports science consultant who testified on Semenya’s behalf and boasts of a Ph.D. in exercise physiology, said the scientific evidence is insufficient to justify the rules. He said that as a result of the court decision, other sports will essentially copy the IAAF’s regulations.

“For them, every fear and concern they had that they will be in the spotlight for introducing similar rules will be gone,” he said. “Other sports will be super happy because the pressure’s off to develop their own regulations.”

He said the ruling moves the world of sports closer to developing its own definition of gender, based on hormone levels.

″‘Sporting sex’ has been introduced,” he said. “That is where the decision does have far-reaching effects.”

John Brewer, a professor of applied sports science at the Buckinghamshire New University in Britain who supports the IAAF rule, said such regulations could end up being adopted not just by individual sports but by team sports such as rugby, soccer and field hockey.

Hormone-blocking drugs can increase the risk of blood clots, thinning bones, fractures and heart problems.

Semenya was legally recognized at birth as female, but her speed and muscular body have led others to cast doubt on the integrity of her track achievements throughout her career. As a teenager in 2009, she won her first world title in Berlin. Hours before the race, the IAAF asked her to undergo a gender verification test.

She is not the only female athlete with high natural levels of testosterone but has become an unwilling face of the issue. Indian sprinter Dutee Chand has been publicly identified as having high testosterone. Two weeks ago, Olympic silver medalist and Semenya rival Francine Niyonsaba of Burundi confirmed she has hyperandrogenism too.

Referring to the rule, Niyonsaba said: “For me, it’s about discrimination. It doesn’t make sense. I didn’t choose to be born like this. What am I? I’m created by God.”

At the 2016 Rio Olympics, Semenya and Chand competed, and other athletes implied that other runners, including medalists in the 800 meters, also had elevated levels.

“I think that we need separate events for them and for us,” Nataliia Lupu of Ukraine said after running against Semenya. “You can see that it’s easy for them.”

Venezuela’s Maduro calls for military unity after clashes

CARACAS, Venezuela (AP) — Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro has called for military unity in an appearance with soldiers at the air base where opposition leader Juan Guaidó called for an uprising two days earlier.

Flanked by commanders, Maduro said Thursday that the military must be prepared to combat “traitors” and the opposition had sought to provoke bloodshed in Caracas since security forces failed to respond to Guaidó’s bid to take power.

He spoke from the Carlota air base in the opposition’s stronghold of eastern Caracas that was the epicenter of the short-lived uprising.

Guaidó, backed by a small contingent of security forces, called for the military to turn against Maduro on Tuesday. But police dispersed the crowds in clashes that raged for hours.

Thousands of Venezuelans heeded the opposition’s call to fill streets around the nation a day later.

The streets of the capital were calm on Thursday.

World Day For Safety And Health At Work- 2019

In the words of an Unknown Author, “You don’t need to know the whole alphabet of safety. The a, b, c of it will save you if you follow it. Always Be Careful.”

Each year on the 28th April, the International Labour Organization (ILO) promotes safe, healthy and decent work. However, the 2019 theme chosen focuses on promoting, “A Safe and Healthy and the Future of Work.”

In addition, it is also inspired by the International Labour Organization’s (ILO’s) Centennial Anniversary which also focuses on “Decent Work and the Future of Work.”

Ever since the emergence of the Labour Movement in the late 1880s/early 1900s one of its main plant was, and still is right up to today, to ensure that the safety and health of all workers in this our very beautiful Federation of Saint Christopher (St. Kitts) are taken care of at their workplace, their homes, their communities, and by extension the entire country.

Even before my involvement in the St. Kitts-Nevis Trades & Labour Union, I could vividly recall all of those stories that was told to me by my grandmother (Virgina “Gina” Pemberton) and many other elderly ladies/gentleman in the Newtown/Corner house community.

Some of those stories remains with me as well as those around of age up to today. For example, those stores were of trigger, lice, bedbug, and many other diseases that used to plague the working class people during the 30’s, 40’s and 50’s.

In fact, I definitely can say without a doubt of contradiction that it was because of the resilience of Cde’s. Sir Joseph N. France, Robert L. Bradshaw, Paul Southwell, Sir Lee L. More, supported by the working class people themselves, their unsafe and unhealthy conditions change for the better. But I am pretty sure that we all will agree that there a lot more to be done.

However, despite the continued criticism from a few misguided individuals about the strength, weakness or the commitment of the leadership of the Union we continue with one of its main plank, which is to continue to raise our collective voices in support of good laws to help safeguard and protect all workers safety and health at their workplaces.

Every year, the International Labour organization (ILO) and the United Nation (UN) continue to actively promote the World Day for Safety and Health at work. Thus, capitalizing on its traditional strengthens of Tripartism and social dialogue.

As the St. Kitts-Nevis Trades & Labour Union observes the sixteenth (16th) year since the first observance of World Day for Safety and Health at Work, we continue to promote rights at work, encourage decent employment opportunities, boots  social protection and strengthen dialogue with our Tripartite Constituents, especially in work related issues.

Very careful research has clearly shown that long before it was officially acknowledge and recognized, the St. Kitts-Nevis Trades & Labour Union gave its commitment to the working class people to do everything within its power to change the very awful conditions that they work, live and socialize in.

Thus, up to this very day we have kept our commitment to the working class people and generally to all workers in this our very beautiful Federation of Saint Christopher (St. Kitts) and Nevis.

The leadership of the St. Kitts-Nevis Trades & Labour Union fully believes that the celebration of World Day for Safety and Health at Work is a very important integral part of the global strategy of the International Labour Organization (ILO) and the United Nation (UN) and their promotion and creation of a Global Preventative Safety and Health Culture involving All Stakeholders.

Over the years, one of our very own was given the opportunity to be train as a Safety and Health Officer by the very best specialize Safety and Health experts in the persons of Cde’s. George DePeana, Sir Leroy Trotman, Kirtist Augustus, and many others, and has since returned and is giving yeoman voluntary service to the Union in order to help educated workers on different aspect of proper Safety and Health at the workplace. In fact, you can catch up on his very interested articles in the pages of the Labour Spokesman the leading and oldest News Paper in the Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis.

It is common knowldge that in most countries around the world, trade unions, employers organisations as well as safety and health practioners are very active in organising activities for the celebration of the World Day for Safety and Health at Work (28th April).

Right here at home, the St.Kitts-Nevis Trades & Labour Union gives its unconditional committment in supporting the Ministry of Health and the Department of Labour in their campaign geared towards putting focus on World Day for Safety and Health At Work.

However, please keep in mind that in addition to the World Day of Safety and Health, we must also remember that the 28th April annually  is International Commemoration Day for the dead and injured Workers by honoring the memory of victims of Occupational Accident and diseases  by organizing, mobilizing and campaigning worldwide on this date (28th April, 2019).

Therefore, as we continue to honor the memory of the dead, let us also remember and keep in mind the words of Joe Hill, one of the Labour Movement’s fallen Hero, “Morn for the Dead, but continue to fight for the living.”

The leadership of the St. Kitts-Nevis Trades & Labour Union fully believes that the goal of Occupational Safety and Health include, to foster a Safe and Healthy work environment.

In addition, Occupational Safety and Health also protects co-workers, family members, employers, might be affected by the workplace environment.

Today, rights in relation to Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) It is also advise that a preventative approach is considered to be the best strategy to eliminate workplace accidents, injuries, and diseases.

It is also a well- known fact that the Caribbean Congress of Labour supports social dialogue as important to regional integration in order that workers’ representatives participate in and influence the decision and policy making processes at the regional level.

As I close today, I wish every worker right here in our very beautiful Federation of Saint Christopher (St. Kitts) and Nevis and by extension every worker worldwide a safe and healthy day, 2019.

As I end here for today, I leave you with a quote by an Unknown Author, and a song from Negro Spirituals.

“Do not depend on others for safety. Help yourself.”

Club Penalised After Player Charged With Attempted Murder

By: Spokesman Newsroom

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts (Friday 26th April 2019) – The Conaree Football Club (CFC) has been dealt some penalties following one its members being slapped with an attempted murder charge having wounded a player of the Village Superstars Football Club after a match played over the past weekend.

Hospitalised for stab wounds is Jaheem ‘Pipe’ Francis and blamed for such wounding is Glenroy Samuel of Conaree. Both are believed to be in their 20s.

Police say Samuel was formally charged with a warrant on Wednesday 24th April.  He was charged in the first instance with the offence of Attempted Murder for an incident that took place on Saturday 20th April 2019 at Warner Park.

The stabbing is said to have taken place sometime after the match in favour of Village Superstars beating Conaree 2-1.

The St.Kitts and Nevis Football Association (SKNFA) via a recent press release frowned upon the incident saying in part: “We are extremely concerned and alarmed at this senseless and wanton act of violence against a player in our league and wish to state categorically that there is absolutely no place whatsoever for this kind of brutal and criminal act against any player, match official, spectator or other stakeholder.”

In most recent developments, yesterday (Thursday) this media house got a look at a leaked letter to CFC from SKNFA informing that Samuel is banned from all related football activities pending the outcome of the court matter in regard to the crime charge and its own investigation.

Furthermore, the club is on the receiving of a sanction of a 24-point deduction in the National Bank Premier League (2018-2019 Points Table) “for failure to conduct itself properly, in particular the control of its players, and adherence to the principles of “Fair Play” in SKNFA matches. Further, the Executive Committee has imposed a Transfer Ban on the SOL Island Auto Conaree for the 2019-2020 SKNFA football season. The transfer ban prevents the club from registering any new player during the said period, except players who are already registered with the club in other SKNFA leagues.”

The SKNFA’s decision has erupted widespread public debate with some claiming that it is unfair for the CFC to be suffer because of a player’s action while others are applauding the measures put in place with immediate effect.
