Teachers: Bearers of Light

0

In the Hub and Spoke of life, education is that centrifugal force that sends light and energy to all life forms that surround it. If the God particle of this universe were to be equated to any one thing that illuminates and brings about transformative change in this universe and to its inhabitants, it would be knowledge. This is because, there is no measure of personal, economic, social, spiritual or business innovation and advancement that mankind has achieved without drawing from that eternal fountain of knowledge.

Throughout the millennia, mankind has entrusted men and women to be the bearers of light and keepers of knowledge. In the African traditions, they were Griot or Wise Ones. The Jews called them Rabbi. In the traditions of the Greeks and Egyptians, we call them Teacher. Like the Divine, the Teacher touches the lives, the hearts and the potential of every one of us by the impartation of knowledge.

On October 5 each year, Education International rededicates its efforts to salute Teachers as enablers of human advancement. We are nothing without the guidance teachers in every generation, every classroom and subject give. Every political leader, Nobel Prize winner, scholarly writer, innovator and success story throughout the world has been touched by the influence of a Teacher.

Sometimes, I yearn for the simple days when we all held Teachers as the final authority on learning. There was a time in our childhood innocence when we corrected our parents on matters by telling them, “No. Teacher said…” It is often sad when Teachers are not held in awe and esteemed highly. One cringes at the thought of having made teaching less than the noble calling it is, rather regarding it as a dumping ground for social and political rejects of the public service.

It is a concern when the bearers of light arrive to the halls of learning with heavy hearts each day. The weight of a system that does little to educate and elevate sits heavily on the shoulders of our Teachers. Our custodians of enlightenment are asked to remain chained to classroom management systems that have long been outmoded. As deans of discipline, our Teachers are asked to operate in a system where they face more disciplinary action than misbehaved students.

It is sad to believe that many of the administrators who seek to put out the light of Teachers once numbered among the nobly called. They too once knew what it was to put light in the eyes of a child with innovations that reached him/her in ways that mattered.

On World Teachers’ Day 2020, I join with Education Internationational in observing the theme, “Teachers: Leading in Crisis, Reimagining the Future”. Reaching our children in times of the new normal needs greater involvement of Teachers and demands less restrictions. The involvement of Teachers demands more inclusion of Teachers and their representative organization, the Teachers’ Union, rather than issuing instructions.

The leadership of our schools, as halls of learning and discipline, should result from a competitive process where positions are advertised (as stated in the law) allowing the most committed and capable to apply and not be passed over for handpicked favourites. Salaries for teachers should be commensurate with the awesome responsibilities of building a nation. Thus, their pay packages should rival those of doctors, lawyers and engineers.

It takes a national commitment to honouring our Teachers everyday by the way we treat each member of this noble profession. Are they babysitters or national builder? The way we condition our education system determines this. Are they just public servants or bearers of enlightment? The pay scale and limitations would determine what we think.

Inspite of it all, our Teachers persevere. They continue to be ardent and dedicated bearers of light. They continue to share their meals with children who do not have. They continue to buy classroom learning aid from their meagre earnings. They give extra lessons for no other reason than the love of being a light bearer. They continue to drink from the fountain of knowledge and share it passionately with our children.

I celebrate Teachers all over the world today. I celebrate the pre-K and primary school Teachers who are foundation builders. I celebrate the middle school and high school Teachers who offer guidance to unbridled minds during the tough tween and teen years. I also celebrate the college and university lecturer and skill training schools instructors who help to polish our students into becoming fit for service to God and country. You are all worth celebrating.

Happy Teachers’ 2020 to all Teachers. Continue to be the bearers of light in what would have been, without you, a very dark world. Go light our world!

Teaching for Peace

0

Ladies and gentlemen, citizens and residents of our beloved Federation. Let us for a moment consider the state of youth in our nation. The 2020/2021 school year has begun, and while much has changed, not the least of which is the reality of the covid-19 pandemic, much remains the same. Too much of this sameness is cause for concern and not cause for comfort.

Once again schools have opened with a shortfall of teachers and an uncertainty of the complement of teachers. Once again, we hear of initiatives to provide youth with a second chance. Delinquency initiatives. Youth initiatives. Gang initiatives. What do these initiatives look like? How much do they cost? Who funds them? Are we closing the proverbial gate after the horse has left the stable? Are we purchasing a pound of cure, and failing to budget for an ounce of prevention?

Are we investing in gangsters while under-investing in teachers? Is our nation paying for peace at the cost of a progressive agenda for our children? We pay for second chances in a resource scarce circumstance, while compromising and inhibiting the effective development of first chances. A well known saying advises us to bend the tree while it is young. Can we have a teacher initiative? Does a teacher initiative qualify as a delinquency initiative?; A youth initiative?; Can a teacher initiative be considered a gang initiative? Who will fund this teacher initiative?

Taking care of our teachers is taking care of our children. When our children’s schools have a deficit of teachers, schools don’t lose students. This means increases in class sizes. In some cases significant increases. Any teacher will tell you that as class size goes up, the class becomes less manageable. Once again, we hear the responses “Teachers can handle it”. “We all have hard jobs”. “That’s what they’re paid for.”

To place class sizes in perspective, understand that larger class sizes and greater student to teacher ratios lead to student discipline issues. Some of our students are struggling with learning disabilities or emotional challenges. Many of our students need accommodations like extra time or individual attention. A percentage of our students will not have slept well last night, need help with a skill, or are going through a personal emergency. Our students will have different reading and doing levels and need to be differentiated for every assignment. Class gets interrupted, needs get unmet, there are too many questions to answer, too many distractions. A tragedy of a different kind manifests if a student is one of those that does not fall into multiple of the categories above. Your hard-working and polite student will be left unchallenged, as the teacher spends the time dealing with the varied and urgent, immediate demands of the class. This is harmful to both teacher and student. The result of the unintended neglect is often guilt and apathy. Teaching, with its close proximity to the nation’s children, is once again overburdened and underfunded.

We teachers will once again react to an unsupportive environment by double-down on our efforts. Once again start running after-school programs. Once again teachers will take pride in our ability to creatively manage a classroom with half the resources. Once again we will show the world the indomitable spirit of our students. Unfortunately, these practices don’t tend to be sustainable. Everyone has a breaking point. Teachers and students in classrooms across the nation will reach their breaking point, term by term, class by class, and student by student.

Once again, neglect of our teachers will tragically result in neglect of our nation.

Hanley Disappointed Over Leaked Ballots Evidence In Ongoing Court Matte

BASSETERRE, St.Kitts (Friday 9th October 2020)- Parliamentary Representative for Constituency One (East Basseterre) of the opposition St.Kitts-Nevis Labour Party (SKNLP) Dr. Geoffrey Hanley says he is disappointed that images of rejected ballots of the June 2020 General Elections, in the ongoing election petition court matter, have been shared via social media.

In an exclusive interview with this media house, he commented: “I was very, very disappointed that even before the matter would have been concluded in the court, information that should have been kept confidential would have been shared in the social media, that is, the rejected ballots. That, to me, should have never happened but of course we’re dealing with people; we don’t know who but I believe one day we’ll find out who.”

Dr. Hanley made such comments while on the topic of a recent court appearance concerning an election petition filed against him by his political opponent Ian ‘Patches’ Liburd of the People’s Action Movement (PAM), following a judge ordered recounting of the ballots and re-examining the rejected ballots conducted at the high court on Friday 2nd October 2020.

The order was given by High Court Judge Justice Trevor Warde on Friday 25th September, and come Friday 16th October, a ruling is expected.

Following the Friday 5th June General Elections, newcomer Dr. Hanley was declared the winner with 1658 votes while Liburd got 1634. Some 98 rejected ballots were rejected.

Dr. Hanley, in further addressing images of rejected ballots being shared on social media, stated: “Going forward, much more must be put in place to ensure that these things don’t happen -from either side- because it is not a good reflection on the system and I know we should have a strong system here.”

Asked what he thinks the aim of leaking the ballots was about, he said: “I think it might have been to confuse the general public. Maybe there might have been some attempt of wanting to tamper to create something else different in the minds of the people but maybe they recognize that they couldn’t have gotten it done so they say nonetheless let them release [the images] so that people could have their own interpretation of what they are seeing.”

While Dr. Hanley chose not to give specific details on the ongoing court matter, he spoke confidently of being victorious on the subject of the rejected ballots.

“I saw them (images) on social media and I was shocked and I also saw several comments from persons who would have indicated that ‘Anywhere you turn it, Geoffrey would still beat him’ so I don’t know if that was a part of it to probably ease some of the pain that some of their supporters might have been going through rather than waiting 16th of October when we should appear back in court…I believe that was part of it.”

About his experience as a newcomer to the political arena, he said: “The journey has been a very rewarding one thus far although there might have been challenges that would have been attached to the journey but because of my personality and my strength and willingness to pursue no matter what, I would have embraced all of those challenges because having the faith that I have in God, I know that He would never leave me and He would give me the necessary strength that I need to conquer.”

He continued: “I am now at a point where the decision of the June 5th General Elections would have been challenged. All throughout, I have never been nervous or worried over it for several reasons. Back to my faith in God and because I have a personal relationship with Him, He never starts something and doesn’t complete it so I knew from then this challenge that I am currently facing is one that I would pass.”

Meanwhile, Liburd appearing on his weekly ZIZ radio programme ‘Straight Talk’ aired on Monday 5th October, told listeners that “lots of things have happened” regarding the court matter. He also stated that his “heart and mind are at peace” and talked about his faith in God.

“I’ve been overwhelmed with numerous telephone calls, emails and messages via other social media in relation to my election petition but I want to apprise you of the fact that this matter is still before the court so I do not intend to entertain any discussion whatsoever as it relates to the case and just to let you know that the matter is still before the court and …lots of things have happened and I don’t really want to mention those things but it will be suffice just to say to thank all of my well-wishers and in particular my Warriors from the East, also my myriad of supporters in St.Kitts and in Nevis, and beyond.”

“Let me reassure you my people of one thing…I’m a man of faith and God has been merciful unto me throughout my life whenever I called upon Him, and during my lifetime, I have had to deal with serious circumstances, worse circumstances than this one and it was nothing else but the grace of God that brought me through. Who knows, it may turn out better because I’ve always put my faith in the higher power,” he added.

Environment Clean-up Marks Celebration of Taiwan’s National Day In SKN

BASSETERRE, St.Kitts (Friday 9th October 2020)- Due to the impact of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, a clean-up event at Timothy Beach instead of the usual cocktail reception has taken place in celebration of the 109th National Day of the Republic of China (Taiwan) observed here in St.Kitts-Nevis.

On Saturday 3rd October, the beach outdoorsy event was held, organized by the Embassy of the Republic of China (Taiwan) in partnership with the Ministry of Tourism, Sustainable Destination Council and the Department of Environment.

Environment Clean-up Marks Celebration of Taiwan’s National Day In SKN

A ceremony was held afterwards at Ocean’s Beach Bar located on the Frigate Bay Strip.

Taiwan resident Ambassador Tom Lee highlighted the reasoning behind the change saying: “In early September, our embassy in light of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the government of St.Kitts and Nevis decided not to host some of the Independence celebration events so our embassy then decided to host this beach cleaning up event to celebrate our National Day so this my first time to wear a t-shirt to celebrate our National Day, and I believe it is your first time too so are very glad to celebrate our national day in this special way.”

He described the event as being “very special and meaningful because on one hand St.Kitts and Nevis is rescheduled to reopen its borders on October 31st so when tourists when they come they want to enjoy the big beach and lie down and enjoy the sunshine too so we are very glad that we can provide some matters on health in this regard.”

Ambassador Lee also addressed the government’s “high priority to protect the environment so we are also very pleased. We can use this occasion to echo the importance of the issue and that’s also why we decide to design our t-shirt this way because we need to work together to protect our environment. We have only one earth. You can see that one the left side St.Kitts and Nevis and on the other is Taiwan, and we work together to make happy the earth.”

T-shirts work by participants included a globe with Taiwan and St.Kitts-Nevis holding hands featuring the words ‘St.Kitts-Nevis & Taiwan Forever Friends’; a design Ambassador Lee says is original.

Ambassador Lee said St.Kitts and Nevis is Taiwan’s strong ally.

He said further: “… and just a week ago… Prime Minister Dr. the Hon. Timothy delivered a very strong speech at the United Nations general debate highlighting the importance of Taiwan’s international participation so on behalf of the people and government of Taiwan, I would like to extend our sincere appreciation and gratitude to the government and people of St.Kitts and Nevis for the strong support. Please be rest assured that Taiwan will continue to work with St.Kitts and Nevis to further strengthen our [cooperation] so that our people on both sides can benefit from our relations. In concluding my remark, I wish the Republic of China (Taiwan) continued success and prosperity and long live the friendship of St.Kitts and Nevis and Taiwan.”

Prime Minister Dr. Timothy Harris remarked “COVID-19, a focus again to realign ourselves with nature.COVID-19 has taught us what we should do and how we should do it.”

He went on to talk about the importance of the environment, keeping safe against the virus and also applauded the Taiwan embassy for its “good idea” this time around in response to COVID-19.

“COVID-19 for all of its challenges has reminded us that the fresh air, the lovely beaches, and all natural habitats are critically important for our health. In the region then we can say, we are faced with the challenge of COVID-19; it will be with us for a long while and so we come today in our masks, and all other things which we will have to continue to practice to achieve perfection…because it is one of the critical tools to fight COVID-19 which has shown that it is nor a respecter of person or region or anyone and it is left to us individually to make that adjustment.

“So I’m happy that COVID-19 has forced a recalibration of everything, from the way in which we do elections to the way we celebrate independence, and the good idea that has come from the Embassy of Taiwan….that this year they would want to focus on the environment,” he added.

Dr. Harris praised the “long and special relationship” with the Taiwan Embassy and by extension the government and people of Taiwan, dating way back to 1983.

Other officials giving congratulatory remarks were Premier Mark Brantley; Minister of Environment Eric Evelyn and also Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Tourism Carlene Henry-Morton.

Following the ceremony, when asked by this media house about Taiwan’s plans for the actual date of celebration (10th October), Ambassador Lee commented: “Actually because of COVID-19, our government is also downsizing the celebration because of COVID-19 we need to keep social distancing that is why we don’t want to have a big gathering. I know our government, next week, is going to do a smaller scale celebration.”

Fundraiser Event Held For Young Man In Need Of Lifesaving Operation

0

BASSETERRE, St.Kitts (Friday 2nd October 2020)- Fundraising efforts are still ongoing in seeking to cover the medical expenses for 30-year-old Jahvin Browne, a physically challenged father of two, who is in need of a lifesaving operation to be done overseas.

On Friday 25th September 2020, a fundraiser event was held at the Independence Square which saw breakfast and lunch on sale.

Entertainment included appearances by well-known media personality and DJ Sweet Sister Sensia and also well-known artiste Footsy.

This media house paid a visit to the event that day and observed Jahvin’s mother Denise Browne in busy mode tending to supporters and well-wishers. She had a brief chit-chat with this reporter but was unable to do an interview at the time.

Details gleaned from his Jahvin’s medical profile, found on gofundme.com, informs that he is a 30- year- old amputee father of two young children, Kirow and Jahtisha, “who is in desperate need of funds for surgery as soon as possible for the endovascular repair of his iliac aneurysm before it ruptures to prevent a premature and unnecessary death.”

It is shared that “without this surgery the natural course of an iliac artery aneurysm (IAA) consists of progressive expansion with eventual rupture, which is associated with EXCEEDINGLY high mortality rates.”

As understood, the surgical fees and hospital costs total TT$246,000.00 (US$ 36,356.92).

“The reason the costs are in TT Dollars is that the nearest island with adequate hospital facilities and surgeons qualified to perform the endovascular repair of Jahvin’s iliac aneurysm is Trinidad.
Jahvin is unemployed due to his condition and neither Jahvin or his family have the money to cover his medical expenses and are desperately worried that his Aneurysm will rupture before the funds for his surgery can be raised resulting in his death and leaving his 2 young children fatherless,” the website information outlines.

Principal, CXC Registrar Calls For Justice In Graded Results

BASSETERRE, St.Kitts (Friday 2nd October 2020) – New principal of the Verchilds High School and CXC (Caribbean Examination Council) registrar Miguel Thomas is not pleased with some instances of the 2020 graded results, according to students’ profiles, concerning his school and is calling for justice on the subject matter.

“…I am hopeful that upon closer scrutiny of the results …other principals can make similar sentiments and I trust that we get some redress in these matters on CXC’s part, and so once again I am grateful for this opportunity, I am grateful for the product on a national level, however, justice is what must be served, and if the students attained a particular grade then that should be reflected.”

Thomas expressed such sentiments at a press conference-organized by the Ministry of Education- for the preliminary CXC results held on Monday 28th September 2020 at the Clarence Fitzroy Bryant College (conference room) located on Burdon Street.

“I must express some dissatisfaction with the results garnered from the CSEC [Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate] from CXC. As the registrar I pride myself in looking at trends and even as a CSEC Geography teacher I’ve registered some dissatisfaction. For one of the strongest cohorts that I have ever entered, they returned the poorest results-all pass- but they returned the poorest results in my teaching career; that is very, very dissatisfying and it’s something that needs to be looked into. I have already penned a letter. I have looked at the trends over the years and I’m displeased especially when all of your students would have gone in with a full SBA score, and it’s quite dissatisfying to see the profiles that the students would have returned.”

Thomas continued:“…it’s one thing to examine different disciples and recognize 100% passes but when you scrutinized the profiles, we recognize that this does not reflect the quality of students that you would have entered and something needs to be done and so I’m going to take further action through the appropriate channels. We recorded a number of other discrepancies where students’ grades are concerned.”

Notably, his comments came after details were publicised about a 5% increase in the national pass rates.

According to Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Education William Hodge, “ Apart from Mr. Thomas, we have not received any other direct complaints from principals as yet but they are putting their queries together in terms of the number of persons whose grades they might want to query.”

The CXC registrar gave instances which support his concerns.

“We had one student who did not attempt a component of an exam so the child received zero for that component. However, the child came back with a grade One and the teacher is in disbelief so that’s something that must be addressed in order.”

He also stated that one student recorded a grade one with one A and two Cs in the profile whilst noting “I’ve never seen that in the history of anything- I’m grateful again but that is something …. justice must be served.”

Thomas added: “We recognize, too, that two students with the lowest SBA score for a particular subject registered grade ones and the students with the highest set of scores came back with the lower grades. Those are the things we are seeing in our local context and we recognize that there are major discrepancies as it relates to the verchilds High School…”

Thomas informed that for the past three years, he served as the CXC registrar for the school which was one of his duties as a senior management member.

“As the newly instated principal of the Verchilds High School, I’m the one who deals with CXC or CSEC and CCSLC [Caribbean Certificate of Secondary Level Competence] related matters for the institution…I am proud to report that we had 69 out of 77 students sitting both English A and mathematics; that’s something we pride ourselves in. Irrespective of what a pass rate might look, we always afford our students the opportunity to take CSEC English A and mathematics and those students who did not sit were either in what we know as a learning support stream or they would have sat it in a previous academic year while they were in third or fourth form but everyone else was given the opportunity irrespective.”

Thomas continued: “We also noted that 13 disciplines attained 100 % pass rates but we are not so much focused on our pass rates. We are eternally grateful for our students who- and I’m certain that all of the principals can give similar sentiments for those who pass and those given the opportunities to attempt particular CSEC subjects.”
