The Labour Spokesman Editorial

Our people, the people of St Kitts and Nevis, continue to suffer buyer’s remorse as we look in consternation at what has to be the most dysfunctional entity that has ever constituted ‘the government’ of our beloved nation. Members of the government not speaking to each other, repeatedly boycotting cabinet meetings, each going off in his or her own direction, ministers doing as they like and not in accordance with cabinet approved policies — and, as if those failings are not bad enough, we have the political hacks and sycophants behaving as if each is a law unto himself or herself.

Day by day we become ever more aware that the governing regime was never for the people, but rather has always been about caring for the few. The abuse of public entities to enrich themselves has risen to such levels that most of our people are observing the carryings-on with utter disbelief. Meanwhile the cost of living is becoming ever more unbearable for the masses of our people. Shoppers at the supermarket and groceries are finding themselves unable to pay for the same quantity of items which they recently did with a fair degree of comfort. Many have experienced having to leave some items at the counter when checking out.

Please be assured that this is not a case of ‘we told you so.’ Rather it is an effort on our part to reinforce the lessons of these experiences, and in that way help to keep you mindful of those who are genuine, and of those who are not. Meanwhile, let us continue our work and ready ourselves to once again rise to the occasion and be prepared to take on what is going to be the daunting task of building back our beloved St. Kitts and Nevis — economically, financially, physically, educationally, and in terms of our overall development. We may very well have to assume those roles much sooner than anticipated. Let us be prepared!
