BASSETERRE, St. Kitts (Thursday 3rd February 2022) — Information concerning the recent deaths of elderly persons dying from COVID-19 in St. Kitts and Nevis indicates that these older individuals picked up their infections from their loved ones. Such details were given by Chief Medical Officer Dr. Hazel Laws in her Health Situation report during the NEOC briefing on Wednesday 2nd February 2022.
“Now over this past few days, we’ve added nine COVID-19 related deaths. It’s important to note that these individuals were all unvaccinated. They were older adults and they had underlying chronic conditions. These individuals weren’t going out regularly; they did not go out and pick up COVID or Omicron. Based on the information that we have, what we are surmising is that these individuals picked up the infections from their loved ones — from their children, their grandchildren, nieces, nephews, sons, daughters — individuals who brought COVID home to them,” she said.
CMO Laws urged: “So we want persons, families and persons in social networks to be careful when interacting with the older adults in your social network, especially those older adults who are unvaccinated because if they do become ill, their risk of getting severely ill and the risk of being admitted is high.” The total number of deaths over the period of the pandemic is now 37, with 31 in St. Kitts and 6 in Nevis. Of the recorded deaths, 23 were males and 14 were females; 89% or 33 individuals who died were unvaccinated, while 78% were over 60 years old. The Federation has to date recorded a total of 5,446 cases with 5,067 recoveries, with the fourth wave having peaked in early January 2022.
