Labour Department Official and Ex-Credit Union Workers Bailed in Severance Fund Fraud

BASSETERRE (Friday 9th October 2020) — Deputy Labour Commissioner Dr. Deon Webb and four former employees of the Police Cooperative Credit Union were bailed on Monday 5th October in an investigation into payments made from the government’s Severance Payment Fund during May and June 2020, involving over EC$1.18 million. Webb, Mario Wigley, Hyacinth Phipps, Chanita Richards and Tisharie Fyfield were granted bail of $60,000 with two sureties. All are charged with Conspiracy to Commit Money Laundering by Possession, along with individual charges including Money Laundering by Transactions, Obtaining Money by False Pretence, and Uttering or Demanding Money on Forged Documents. The National Audit Office had requested the investigation on 27th July 2020. The accused return to court on December 7, 2020.
