BASSETERRE, St. Kitts (Thursday 30th March 2023) -Almost eight months after the August 2022 general elections, two new comer candidates and two longstanding executive members of the People’s Labour Partywithin the period 24th to 26th March 2023have called it quits with the political organisation led by immediate past Prime Minister and Party Leader Dr.
Timothy Harris. Immediate past Deputy Party Leader Akilah Byron-Nisbett (candidate for Constituency Three-West Basseterre), Chairman Warren Thompson and rookie candidates Nubian Greaux (an inception PLP member) of Constituency Two-Central Basseterre and Andrew ‘Talbo’ Bass (of Constituency) are all claiming that the values of the party no longer aligns with theirs, cutting ties with the 2013-formed political organization which has a saw as its symbol.
First publicized resignation was that of Byron-Nisbett who in a public social media informed that that as of March 24th 2023, she is no longer a part of the executive nor member of that party. She informed of such via a video presentation on her personal Facebook page on the effective date. For the other resigned members, their letters shared on social media has signaled their status with the party.
For Byron-Nisbett: “What I did realize is that the party and leadership that I once believed in had strayed away from its core principles which no longer align with mine.” Meanwhile, Greaux’s letter dated 25th March addressed to Thompson, expressed that: “over the last few months, I have seen a general deterioration of the values of the party and the eradication of democracy, a principle that is of great importance to me. After much deliberation and discussions, it is clear that the current leadership of the People’s Labour Party does not respect the core values of the party.
It is rather unfortunate that as a party, we continue to engage in a level of disrespect and disregard, of which I want no part of. Regardless of this decision, I will continue to work assiduously within my constituency to fulfil my role as a community leader.” Bass’ letter also dated 25th March, addressed to Thompson told: “I contested as a candidate in the last elections because I believed that I would be change in constituency 8 under the leadership of Dr Hon.
Timothy .S.Harris. Unfortunately over the last few months, I have seen a change in the values of the party that is not in-tuned with mine. It is now becoming clear that we cannot agree to basic democratic principles and regret that I tender my resignation from the party.
I want to assure the people of constituency 8 that I will remain resolute in serving opportunity that presents itself.” Then Thompson’s letter addressed to Dr. Harris dated 26th March and copied to the National Party Secretary pointed out that: “Six (6) years ago I took the Office of National Party Chairman for the Peoples Labour Party with pride.
A party that shared concerns of citizens and residents. I was happy to be a part of the movement working towards a better nation. Sadly the PLP light that once shone to core values is now no longer shinning and I cannot continue to follow.
Therefore as of today March 26th 2023, I resigned as National Chairman and will no longer be a part of PLP membership. I wish the PLP Party well going forward.”
