returned to the Federation in 1986, after finishing his studies as a Medical Doctor at Jamaica Campus, of the West Indies University and performing his internship, he was not greeted too kindly by the Simmonds, PAM Administration. Lee Llewellyn Moore had just lost his second General Election as Leader of the St.
KittsNevis Labour Party and the Party was in shambles. Labour supporters welcomed him with open arms, for they saw him as the replacement to Lee Llewellyn Moore, who, though a Brilliant Scholar, having won the Leeward Islands Scholar, went to England to pursue STUDIES in Law. whilst a Scholar in England, he won the Commonwealth Debating Competition.
On his return home as the Public Relations Officer for the Labour Party under the great Leadership of comrade Robert Llewellyn Bradshaw, he was greeted with much fanfare. In 1978, Comrade Bradshaw died and this is where Lee Moore’s Leeadership mettle was tested.
At every Labour Party Conference, Hon. Paul Caleb Azariah Southwell was always voted as the Deputy Leader to Comrade Bradshaw. Yet, when Comrade Bradshaw died, confusion reigned in the Party and this confusion ruined the smooth running of the Party, for all of a sudden, Lee Moore wanted to become Leader of the Party when at the last Conference, Comrade Paul Southwell was elected unanimously as the Deputy Leader of the Party.
It was not long after Comrade Bradshaw’s death, that Comrade Southwell also died and Lee Llewellyn Moore took over the Leadership of the Party and here it was proven that although you are a brilliant scholar, it does not mean that you possess great Leadership skills. Leaders, it is said, were born and not made.
After Comrade Bradshaw’s death, a bye-election was to be held to replace him in the Central Basseterre Constituency. A meeting of Central Basseterre Constituency was held and Comrade William Ferdinand Dore was chosen by the Constituents to replace Comrade Robert Bradshaw.
Lo and behold, instead of hearkening to the wishes of the Constituents, Mr. Anthony Ribeiro whom the Constituents did not vote for, was thrust upon them. This caused further confusion within the ranks of the Central Basseterre Constituency and, on the day of the Bye-Election many Central Basseterre Constituents, did not go out to vote.
The results of the Elections showed that Comrade Anthony Ribeiro won the Bye Election. However, Dr. Kennedy Simmonds the PAM Candidate, who had switched from Constituency # 1 East Basseterre to run in Central Basseterre, appealed the decision and Judge Hewlett of Antigua was sent to hear the Appeal.
All the spoilt ballots that the Supervisor of Elections, Mr. Aubrey York deemed spoilt, was automatically made out to be valid ballots, although the Law clearly states that the “X” must be placed inside the box provided for it.
Judge Hewlett ruled that it was the intent of the voter which must be taken into consideration and declared Dr, Kennedy Alphonse Simmonds the winner. The many shenanigans which took place at the Judges home on Greenland must be recorded.
Since Comrade Lee Llewellyn Moore had no intention of Appealing the Appeal, he should have allowed Dr. Kennedy Alphonse Simmonds to attend the sitting of Parliament, which he blatantly refused to open. This refusal to open Parliament disgusted the citizens and, when the 1980 Elections were called the Electorate voted in 3 PAM Candidates, 4 Labour Candidates.
PAM quickly joined up with N.R.P to form the Government and Dr. Kennedy Alphonse Simmonds who vehemently and bitterly opposed Comrade Bradshaw in 1971, when he proposed going into Independence, joined forces with Simeon Daniel Leader of the Nevis Reformation Party (N.R.P), a strong secessionist to take us into Independence.
No wonder they made such a muck of the word INDEPENDENCE?Clause 113 gives Nevis the right to secede from St. Kitts, but St. Kitts does not possess that same right. Nevis has its own Island Assembly, but St. Kitts has none.
St. Kitts House of Assembly is the Federal Parliament, the Federal Government. If Nevis has its own Nevis Island Assembly, then St. Kitts should have had its own St. Kitts Island Assembly. There should then be a Central or Federal structure where both Nevisians and Kittitians sit!!
This is what constitutes a Real Federation. I hope that the powers that be, gives real meaning to the word “FEDERATION!!” Although Hon. Simeon Daniel was supposed to be the Federal Minister of Finance, he never in the history of the coalition delivered the Budget Address.
This was always executed by the Junior Minister of Finance, Hon. Richard Masa Caines? What kind of arrangement, agreement was that? A Federal Minister of Finance never, ever once delivering the Budget Address to the Parliament?
There is this saying that nothing lasts forever and so the coalition began severing. Dr. William Billy Herbert, the de facto Leader of PAM went missing, St. Kitts was referred to by the International Press as “Devil’s Island”.Michael Oliver Powell was disgracefully and dishonourably dismissed from his post as the Deputy Leader of PAM and stripped of all his Ministerial positions and privileges.
In 1989, Dr. Denzil Llewellyn Douglas became Leader of the St. Kitts-Nevis Labour Party at a meeting of the Party held at Comrade Fitzroy Bryant’s house in St. Peters. He immediately set about re-organizing the Party, holding meetings down at Fair View Inn Hotel with the various groups in the Party.
In the 1989 General Elections PAM on its own, after changing the Constitution to eight seats in St. Kitts and three in Nevis. By this time, Dr. Douglas who had set up Medical Offices in Basseterre, St. Pauls, Saddlers never charged his elderly patients for attending to them, claiming that it is through their sweat and toil, why he was able to go away and study to be a Medical Doctor.
I have to back track a little to remind my readers that in 1980 when PAM attained Political Power in St. Kitts, Dr. Denzil Douglas was on a Government Scholarship in Jamaica. Dr. Simmonds and PAM ceased the payment of the Scholarship.
Mr. Cedric Harper a Kittitian and big official on the Jamaica Campus, continued paying his fees for him, until he graduated. In St. Kitts, Dr. Kennedy Simmonds ordered that the prescriptions of Dr. Denzil Douglas must not be recognized at any Government clinic.
Mrs. Agnes Skerritt of Skerritt’s Drugstore assisted the elderly patients with their medication and Dr. Douglas himself used to dip his hands in his pocket to assist those elderly with their medication. The amazing thing about “LIFE” is that none of us can foretell, or foresee, what tomorrow ho for us and we should all SOAR like Eagles to show that we will not be lured into “Rendering EVIL for Evil, but to render that EVIL with GOOD.Dr.
Denzil Llewellyn Douglas was debarred many times from visiting his patients at the Joseph N France General Hospital, yet, when he became Prime Minister of the Federation, he ensured that all Medical Doctors prescription were recognized at all clinics. He soared like the Eagle he was created to be and did not “Render Evil for Evil, like what Dr.
Kennedy Alphonse Simmonds had meted out to him. Dr. Simmonds had a brother who was the Medical Doctor for Her Majesty’s Prison and he was allowed to continue providing Medical Services to the Prison.?At no time whatsoever, was he debarred from visiting his patients at the J.N.F General Hospital and at no time was his patient’s prescription not filled?
What a Giant of a man this midget of a man was as Prime Minister? RISING AND SOARING like the EAGLE he was created to be? Another unseen thing about “LIFE” is that we who possess a little Power have children and, according to Exodus 20: 5 and Numbers 14: 18, The sins of the father visited the children, down to the third and the fourth generation.
We are advised to do good, regardless of the hurt some people inflict upon us? It is very hard to turn around and do good to someone who has hurt you terribly, but you do not travel the same roadway as those who hurt you?
There is this quotation I learned since a small boy. “To look for the best in others, And smile when they make mistakes, To count them as friends and brothers, Will show that we have got what it takes. To master the art of living, Find peace in place of strife.
This is but the gift of giving, And this is the joy of life!!” We were all created to be EAGLES to SOAR, to FORGIVE, To look for the BEST IN OTHERS and we must not allow anyone to bring us down to their yard fowl level, for, when we are relegated to their yard fowl level where we are scrabbling the surface of the earth just like them, they can easily look across at us, but, when we SOAR like EAGLES, we force them to gaze up at us in awe, wonderment, admiration and respect !!We must always force others to look up to us with respect and admiration. We must always force them to look up at us in and want to copy or emulate us.
We must always be the Shining Example for them. We must lift them up to our level and not allow them to drag us down to theirs. Let us be role models for them. Nothing at all bad, happens to us in life. When Dr Terrance Michael Drew lost his seat twice, his political opponents discarded him as a born loser.
They failed miserably to detect the Impregnable Brimstone Hill Fortifications Mettle of which the man is abundantly constructed? Lesser mortals who were running for personal gain for them and their family, would have buckled under the weight of losing and given up the fight.
But Dr. Terrance Michael Drew
