Basseterre, St. Kitts, June 11, 2020 — Lindsay Grant and Jonel Powell, who misappropriated US$460,000 (EC$1.2 million) belonging to a client, failed in their attempt to appeal when three judges of the Eastern Caribbean Appeal Court rejected their application during a hearing on Wednesday.

Grant and Powell, who were elected to the St. Kitts and Nevis National Assembly on June 5th, had been found liable by High Court Judge Justice Eddy Ventose of breach of trust and breach of fiduciary responsibility in the misappropriation of funds belonging to a client, Tanzania Tobin Tanzil.

Grant and Powell will now appear before a two-judge panel of the Eastern Caribbean Supreme Court which will determine whether they should be suspended from practicing as lawyers or debarred. The court had earlier ordered them to pay damages to the claimant, with the funds having been transferred to their bank for the specific purpose of purchasing a condominium unit under the Citizenship By Investment Programme.
