BASSETERRE, St. Kitts (FEBRUARY 2018): This week, following the commissioning of Traffic lights here in St. Kitts, members of the public have  been requesting parking spaces in and around Basseterre noting that there are limited areas for such at present.

Investigations by this media have revealed that a substantial amount of parking spaces have been removed from the Basseterre are in an effort to ensure the smooth operations of the newly installed signal lights.

Many individuals have indicated that finding a parking space has proven to be extremely difficult at mornings.

“I now have to  find parking so far away from my work because the parking area that was in close proximity of my job has been removed…. So I now have to park far away and rush to work to avoid being late”, a lady told this media house.

“I can’t find no parking. I have to be driving around in circles hoping that someone moves for me to go in their spot. So we must park in the sky then?” another person said angrily.

“I welcome the lights but it wasn’t done properly, if you take up parking spaces then they should at least provide a particular area for us to park, after all man”, a man told this reporter.

Traffic Department Head, Inspector Carl Caines, informed that the Traffic Department is exploring means of addressing the issue noting that the old Basseterre High School may be utilized for parking.

“What we’re looking at, we’re looking at the Basseterre High School grounds. I’m going to speak to the authorities and if they say yes, it is yes, but for me, I believe that is the ideal spot at the present moment. Until they use that for some other purpose but for the moment it is there wasted, I believe our people can use that to park” Caines said.

Notably, the Old Basseterre High School has been abandoned since 2015 by the Team Unity Government which claimed that the compound was unfit to use, as it posed a health threat to both teachers and students.
