Coach Stephen Clarke, while wanting a win, was content with the one point earned from
the draw. “I will take the one point. It was a very hard fought game but I rather three
points. I go back home with one (point). I am at the top of the table, we end the first
round—I will go back home with one point,” Coach Clarke said. St. Paul’s player Taju
Clarke commended the effort of his team to hold on to the result. “If we couldn’t get the
win, we were hoping for the draw and we got the draw,” Clarke said.
On Sunday, the shock results continued with Mantab edging out Elco Ltd. St. Peters 2-1.

The final match of the evening saw:
SOL I.A.S CONAREE   0 – 0 FLOW 4G CAYON

Assistant coach for Cayon Jazza Buchanan said after the match that while they wanted
a win, the match was a perfect opportunity to blood the young players. “Good game. I
think I saw a lot more coming out from the youngsters…I was impressed to see how the
youngsters are playing. The more and more we play them, the more I am seeing the
confidence,” Buchanan said.

The draw against Conaree locked in the fourth position for Cayon which means they will
be competing in this season’s Carnival Cup in two weeks. That, Buchanan says means
a lot to Cayon. “We are going in the Carnival Cup to win because the Carnival Cup is
open for anybody to win… it’s like a fresh start. It’s four teams in there and anybody can
win it. It’s not about who ahead with the most points, it’s all about you doing your job
and finish it and come out on top,” he said.

Coach Alexis Morris is disappointed with the result, as he was hoping for a win and a
chance to compete in the Carnival Cup. “It’s quite unfortunate that we did not get the
three points we were looking for…we were there from the inception and not to be there
this time around; its’ not the greatest of feelings,” he said. The coach noted that it
appeared as if his players were tired and they were not able to capitalize on the
chances they created.

The National Bank Premier League begins round two this weekend before the Carnival.

Cup the following weekend, which would round out the games for the calendar year and
the Christmas/Carnival break.

Transparency Vs. Trying To Blind People

The Team Unity Government cannot match the Dr. Denzil Douglas Administration in terms of reasons and explanations given to the general public for governmental actions, policies and programmes.

For example, Team Unity took over the reins of government in February 2015 and shortly thereafter certain members of Team Unity were charged with dishonesty as they could not give, and have not given a full and proper account of the money donated as campaign funds and for which those persons in question were put in charge. Certainly, neither Dr. Douglas nor anyone in his cabinet has ever been accused or suspected of stealing or misusing sums of money donated as campaign funds.

Robert Bradshaw, Lee L. Moore and E. St. John Payne respectively all built their own private residence with funds which they provided personally regardless of any help from the government.

It has not been the same insofar as politicians of other parties are concerned.

It has been said that politicians in other ruling parties have put their hands on government funds with which to fortify or to improve their private homes without first obtaining the permission of the government to use its funds.

The government had publicised the fact that in recent times it has had certain discussions with a certain overseas group concerning the matter of stem cell research here in St.Kitts.

The first time the matter came up, the government denied the fact that it had given permission for stem cell research to be carried out in St.Kitts. Even the most intelligent ones among us could not understand what the government itself was saying.

Even cabinet ministers could not understand precisely what government itself was saying as one cabinet minister was saying one thing while another cabinet minister was saying another and different thin. All we know for sure is that the Chief Medical Officer (CMO) was fired from his job.

The Venezuelans gave the government of St.Kitts-Nevis a second grant of funds to be used to compensate the sugar workers who lost their jobs because of the closure of the sugar industry. The Team Unity Government at first said that the grant was in US currency and then, on the other hand, Team Unity said that the grant was in EC currency.

Again, as usual, one cabinet minister said that the grant was in US currency while another cabinet minister said that the grant was in EC currency. You see the Team Unity Government cannot talk straight.

During the period when Bradshaw was Premier of St.Kitts-Nevis, the government received a first payment and then a second payment from Canada for sugar sold to that country. The price of sugar had risen on the world market during the negotiations for the sale of the sugar to Canada.

Bradshaw did not fool anybody. Bradshaw saved the full amount of the second payment and used the money subsequently to form the basis for the Social Security Scheme. You see, Bradshaw was a straight man and he talked straight.

Certain local organisations have been asking Team Unity just to divulge the names of all the persons who received payment from the money granted to Team Unity to compensate the sugar workers who lost their jobs as a result of the closure of the sugar industry.

So far Team Unity has not responded to that request for information. The story making the rounds is that members of certain families in Tabernacle were paid compensation money although they retired in the 1970s and 1980s long before the sugar industry was closed.

We are living in an age where highly intelligent and professional civil servant cannot be known to be supporters of Truth, Honesty, Decency, Equity and Decorum. To be known as such is to bring down the wrath of the Public Service Commission (PSC) upon your shoulders.

The PSC functions nowadays as the personal and obedient puppet of the Team Unity Government.

When Team Unity cannot direct the lives of certain civil servants, it simply sets the PSC on them to get them out of the way. Team Unity does not arrive at practices and policies by a process of logic and common sense but by stumbling upon such policies and practices.

Scotiabank Not Sold (As Yet)

By: Precious Mills

BASSETERRE, St.Kitts (November 2018)-News broke earlier this week that Scotiabank (out of Canada) has entered into an agreement to sell its Caribbean operations; a move that has prompted heavy criticism of concern in Guyana and also the neighbouring island of Antigua to date.

This media house contacted and briefly spoke with the Managing Director of Caribbean East for Scotiabank David Parks in Barbados who has agreed to do an interview.

Attempts to reach the Chamber of Industry and Commerce (in St.Kitts) for a comment were unsuccessful.

A press release issued on Tuesday this week (27th November), spotlighted Scotiabank’s announcement of a new partnership to deliver enhanced insurance services in Jamaica and Trinidad & Tobago and to refocus its Caribbean operations by divesting operations in nine (9) countries including the Federation.

As understood, Republic Financial Holdings Limited is expected to acquire Scotiabank’s Banking Operations in Anguilla, Antigua, Dominica, Grenada, Guyana, St. Kitts & Nevis, St. Lucia, St. Maarten, St. Vincent & the Grenadines.

“Scotiabank today announced agreements with respect to certain of its Caribbean operations, as part of its strategy to focus the Bank’s efforts on its core markets with significant scale,” part of the statement read.

It continued: “As part of this strategy, Scotiabank’s subsidiaries in Jamaica (Scotia Group Jamaica Limited, “Scotiabank Jamaica”) and Trinidad & Tobago (Scotiabank Trinidad & Tobago Limited, “Scotiabank Trinidad & Tobago”) announced that they will enter into a 20-year distribution agreement with Sagicor Financial Corporation Limited (“Sagicor”) through which an enhanced suite of market-leading insurance products and solutions, underwritten by Sagicor, will be offered to Scotiabank customers in Jamaica and Trinidad & Tobago. As part of this partnership, Scotiabank Jamaica and Scotiabank Trinidad & Tobago have entered into agreements to sell their respective insurance subsidiaries: Scotia Jamaica Life Insurance Company and ScotiaLife Trinidad and Tobago Limited to Sagicor.”

“These agreements are subject to regulatory approval and customary closing conditions. The transaction is also subject to the closing of the announced transaction whereby Sagicor will be acquired by Alignvest Acquisition II Corporation subject to conditions in and pursuant to a plan of arrangement and the surviving entity will continue the Sagicor brand and be publicly-listed on the Toronto Stock Exchange.”

The statement went on to indicate that: “Scotiabank has also entered into an agreement to sell its banking operations in 9 non-core markets in the Caribbean (Anguilla, Antigua, Dominica, Grenada, Guyana, St. Kitts & Nevis, St. Lucia, St. Maarten, St. Vincent & the Grenadines) to Republic Financial Holdings Limited (“RFHL”). The agreement is subject to regulatory approvals and customary closing conditions.”

It was also communicated that these transactions are not financially material to Scotiabank.

“Scotiabank’s common equity tier one capital ratio will increase by approximately 10 basis points on closing. Until such approvals are obtained and conditions are met, and the transactions close, all Scotiabank operations in these countries will continue as usual.”

Taiwan Donates Dialysis Machines To Hospital

By: Precious Mills

BASSETERRE, St.Kitts (November 2018)-This week, the Embassy of the Republic of China (Taiwan)- acting on behalf of its government- donated three (3) new haemodialysis machines costing over US$60,000 altogether.

On the morning of Tuesday 27th November, a presentation ceremony was held at the Haemodialysis Unit of the Joseph N. France General Hospital in Basseterre where a total of seven machines are now in place.

Newly-appointed resident Taiwan Ambassador Tom Lee pointed out the donation has been made as part of the efforts of the people and government of Taiwan “to help St.Kitts and Nevis increase capacity of controlling the CK (chronic kidney) diseases.”

In touching on the significance of the contributed equipment, he remarked: “…The major cause of deaths in St.Kitts and Nevis are chronic diseases such as diabetes but many of you may not know that one of four diabetes patients many develop CKD (chronic kidney disease) and the haemodialysis machines that we are donating today are very crucial to the patients’ (health). Without the machines, patients with CKD may die. That explains why this project is very important.”

Ambassador Lee said Taiwan is a strong ally of St.Kitts and Nevis and reassured his government’s continued assistance to the Federation.

“We are always ready to respond to your need. Please rest assure that our embassy will continue to work hard so more and more people in this country can benefit from our cooperation projects.”

Health Minister Wendy Phipps informed that “When the Team Unity administration took office, we would have inherited an arrangement whereby there was a joint venture between a company out of the French West Indies and JNF management team on behalf of the government which at the time would have been partnering in terms of the Haemodialysis Unit as well as the CT scan services at the hospital.”

She highlighted the challenges of operating with four machines at the time with a kidney register of about 86 persons which saw issues like no down time of machines and long working hours for the staff.

According to the Health Minister, by 2016, the government purchased on its own four haemodialysis machines with one being a mobile unit.

She recalled discussions with Ambassador Lee’s predecessor George Gow Wei Chiou in seeking assistance in the area of addressing the “onslaught” of non-communicable diseases (NCD) noting that 83% of deaths in St.Kitts and Nevis is attributed to such.

Phipps informed that subsequent to discussions with former ambassador Chiou, her colleague Minister Eugene Hamilton “journeyed to Taiwan and then cemented that arrangement and what we are doing here today is the actual materialisation of that expression to the haemodialysis unit.”

She continued: “So in effect with the four that would have been purchased in 2016 and these three, we now have seven machines that are entirely owned and operated by the government.”

As informed by Phipps: “Those inherited upon officer are no longer useable.”

The Health Minster spoke about preventing NCDs.

“…Our kidney patient listing continues to grow but at the same time we must do everything in our power to make sure that not only are we treating NCDs but that we are preventing them.”

Phipps thanked Ambassador Lee for the gift from his government noting that such “is an extension of the partnership that we would have already developed over the years in terms of health care but more particularly in terms of the chronic kidney Disease Project.”

That project, she said, was started two years ago “in the public health system so that persons can be properly screened ahead of time to know what the predisposition would have been to kidney failure etc. where possible and prevent it.”

By: Precious Mills

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts (November 2018)- Under the theme ‘Culture, Competition, Feting- Sugar Mas 47’, the annual St.Kitts-Nevis National Carnival was officially launched last Friday night (23rd November) before an impressive crowd gathered at The Circus in the heart of Basseterre as organised by the St. Kitts Nevis National Carnival Committee.

That night competitors of the National Carnival Queen Pageant, Swimsuit Competition, Mr. GQ and Talented Teen were officially presented to the public and sashed with their respective sponsors via a raffle system.

Sponsor companies who have employees competing were allowed first pick of that individual.

Following the official opening of Sugar Mas, the Female Calypso Bacchanal Competition final was held which saw the reigning Senior Calypso Monarch outshining her competitors.

Government Minister Eugene Hamilton deputised on behalf of Minister of Culture Shawn Richards –who was off island at the time- in declaring the annual festivity open.

In giving a historical recap, he had this to say: “Carnival is an activity in St.Kitts-Nevis which actually started back in 1957. Its predecessor was called Christmas Sports and before that it may have been labelled simply a year end celebrations where slaves were granted time to give reverence in song and they were also given the opportunity to dance and to masquerade and indeed they were also allowed to party-to participate in drinks and food. However, Carnival was not materialised until 1971 and today we are celebrating the Sugar Mas 47 bearing in mind that there was not any in 1993 which prompted Ellie Matt to make a song called ‘Small Carnival’ in 1993.”

While observing this year’s theme, Hamilton highlighted that “Fetes have become an integral part of our carnival and t has served to transform Sugar Mas into a more attractive tourism product.”

Additionally, he encouraged spectators and revellers to be alert at all times in ensuring that there is no harm to each other.

“Please be vigilant. We want a carnival that is incident free and accident free and I suggest to you those of you when you’re feting keep your faculties in gear so that you don’t do things that you’ll regret.”

On the Female Calypso Bacchanal side of things, from a field of eight competitors, Miss Independent was crowned the winner, scoring 246 points with a song called ‘Rat Tat Tat’ which addressed the scourge of violence and crime.

She has dethroned Brown Sugar who followed closely in the first runner-up spot with 243 points.

Placing second runner-up was Queen Kibie, with 229 points while in third runner-up position was Charis D with 221 points. Notably, Queen Kibie is Miss Independent’s older sister.

Geoffrey Hanley Out To Clear His Name

By: Spokesman Newsroom

BASSETERRRE, St.Kitts (Friday 23rd November 2018)-Accused by timescaribbeanonline.com in a recent article of mismanagement of the former PEP (People Employment Programme), the opposition St. Kitts-Nevis Labour Party (SKNLP) fresh candidate for Constituency One (East Basseterre) Dr. Geoffrey wants the court to clear his name of defamation and criminal libel levelled against him by that media outlet said to be “the political mouthpiece of the Dr. Timothy Harris-led administration.”

Dr. Hanley’s team is of the view that his “detractors” are caught up in a “smear” campaign.

A written statement issued earlier this week (Sunday 18th November) from his political office, highlighted the intention of addressing the matter.

“The Office of Dr. Geoffrey Hanley, the St. Kitts-Nevis Labour Party candidate for East Basseterre, wishes to bring to the attention of the law-abiding public that Dr. Hanley has retained counsel to pursue legal action against timescaribbeanonline.com and its shady actors for defamation and criminal libel through an article published on its website on November 15, 2018.”

It continued: “In Dr. Hanley’s view, the article promulgates an innuendo of wrongdoing on his part in relation to the PEP programme. Dr. Hanley categorically and forthrightly denies any wrongdoing whatsoever over the 28 years of his public service career and calls upon timescaribbeanonline.com, the political mouthpiece of the Dr. Timothy Harris-led administration, to remove the referenced offending article from its website and to refrain from publishing any such false or misleading information about him or his tenure in the public service.”

The statement also pinpointed that Dr. Hanley’s detractors are engaging in smear campaigns against him and that he is not daunted by the disinformation.

“Dr. Hanley was always mindful that as a result of the strong, organic political support which his candidacy is receiving from the constituents of East Basseterre, which includes Taylor’s, New Pond’s Site, Pond’s Estate, Pond’s Extension, Newtown, Pond’s Pasture, Bird Rock, Frigate Bay and the South East Peninsula, his detractors would seek to engage in smear campaigns against him as their only hope of thwarting the legitimate will of the people of East Basseterre.”

“Dr. Hanley is not daunted by his opponent’s campaign of disinformation but is instead committed to a campaign of positive engagement with the people he intends to serve in Parliament. Dr. Hanley cares about the bread and butter issues that the people of East Basseterre are faced with. He is eager to tackle the increasing prevalence of crime, and the dire need for housing, educational opportunities, and employment. He is focused on meeting young and middle-aged men and women who need assistance in getting their businesses up and running, and off the rocks. Dr. Hanley intends to take on these crippling concerns of the people of East Basseterre and ensure respectful, honourable and uplifting representation by the next representative of East Basseterre,” the release further stated.

Dr. Hanley was the immediate past PEP manager before the change of the SKNLP administration to the now Team Unity government following the February 2015 General Elections. PEP has been changed to STEP (Skills Training Empowerment Program) under the new government.

Dr. Hanley is expected to run against government minister Ian ‘Patches’ Liburd of the People’s Action Movement (PAM) in the next General Elections.
